10 Great Old Songs I Just Discovered in 2022

Hello there, it’s Christmas time and this is my gift for all of you, I hope you have fun with all of these songs I just discovered this very year.

“Where there’s music there can be no evil.” – Miguel de Cervantes

The YouTube algorithm has been good to me this year, I can’t complain.

With all the crap that you have to put up to with these days it’s better to just relax to an old tune, am I right?

So, without further ado, let’s begin:

10 The Clash - Know Your Rights (1982)

The Clash - Know Your Rights (Remastered)

It was the first single of their classic album Combat Rock of 1982 which contains classics such as Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go. I discovered this one through a trivia, apparently The Clash is the favorite band of a certain person named Angelina Jolie. A song that supposedly is about the rights of the poor and disenfranchised. Funny how a now extinct leftist band has so many right-wing followers. Check this tune, it’s great.

9 Gerry Rafferty - Right Down the Line (1978)

Gerry Rafferty - Right Down the Line (Lyric Video)

I didn’t know much about this guy, and the only song I’ve ever heard from him was his big classic Baker Street, that one with the great sax. Born in Scotland in 1947 he had always trouble with alcoholism, but in 1978 he managed to release an album which contains a few classics. This song appeared one day on a soft rock compilation by YouTube. Very good lyrics and nice melodies. Ideal for listening in your car when you return home after a bad day at work.

8 The Doors – The Spy (1970)

The Doors - The Spy

I own 4 cd’s by The Doors, they’re one of my favorite – if not, my all-time favorite - bands ever from the US, but can you believe I have never listened to this little jewel? The Morrison Hotel album of 1970 didn’t produce any major hits but has always been praised by fans for its bluesy style. My favorite from that album is Roadhouse Blues. If you look at the cover of the album you will see a hotel in downtown LA offering rooms for $ 2.50 a night… and then those baby boomers tell you that you have an easy life now. I love the vocals of Jim Morrison in this song and I have to buy myself this cd. Don’t you wish you were a spy?

7 Queen - Face It Alone (2022)

Queen - Face It Alone (Official Video)

Ok, not exactly an old classic song, but it was never published and was left out of the horrible album The Miracle. Written by Queen and released in 2022, it’s a moving and inspiring song with good lyrics and great vocals by Freddie. The video had thousands of views upon its release. I wish they had included this one in The Miracle back in 1989, perhaps it wouldn’t have sucked that much. Check it out.

6 311 - Love Song (2004)

311 - Love Song

A cover of the legendary The Cure song of 1989 now in a relaxing soft rock/reggae version. It was included in the soundtrack of a stupid comedy movie of 2004 which I’ve always refused to watch. 311 is one of those underrated bands that have their good hits from time to time. I recommend you to listen to their 1999 album Soundsystem, one of my favorites when I was in college. So, put this one on a road trip when you’re heading for the beach.

5 The Box Tops – The Letter (1967)

The Box Tops - The Letter

Included on the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list, this one reached the number one position and was the second most played song of 1967. Apparently the whole song was inspired by the first line: "Give me a ticket for an aeroplane", suggested by someone else. It was this band’s first and greatest hit. It’s been covered many times, including a cover by Joe Cocker. I discovered this one this year on a video of best songs of the 1960s and now I share it with you. Enjoy.

4 Extreme – King of the Ladies (2008)

Extreme - King of the Ladies (Official Video)

Extreme is much more than a one hit wonder; maybe their other songs didn’t quite make it as More Than Words but that doesn’t mean they’re not good. I lost track of them in the mid-1990s, turns out they released a couple more albums and are still touring. This song is about a guy wishing to go back in time to the 1980s with all the knowledge of a full grown man, and, therefore, he would drive all the girls crazy, and who wouldn’t? Don’t you want to be the king of the ladies? By the way, did you know there are people out there who consider Nuno Bettencourt the best guitarist in the world? In this video you will find out why.

3 Dire Straits – Telegraph Road (1982)

Telegraph Road

One of those great songs never released as a single, and who would have dared to play a 14 minutes and 15 seconds song on the radio in 1982? Who would dare now? Calm and explosive later, beautiful, with a killer guitar solo, courtesy of Mark Knopfler. He was inspired to write this one while riding in the front of the tour bus, which made the journey down Telegraph Road, a major north-south 70 mile thoroughfare in Michigan, and also inspired by his reading of The Growth Of the Soil by the great Knut Hamsun. Did you know there are people out there who consider Telegraph Road the best song in history? Do yourself a favor and check it out, you will gain the best 14 minutes of your music life.

2 Natalie Merchant – Carnival (1995)

Natalie Merchant - Carnival

I discovered this one on a video about best songs of 1995; it was the first single from Merchant’s debut solo album of 1995. She was inspired to write the song after visiting the New York City for the first time when she was 16. It is cool, relaxing and inspiring at the same time; the guitar solo is also very nice. I love the video, shot on black and white, showing a cool girl just walking, singing and taking pictures with a Leica in a city of wealth and poverty that makes her feel like she’s in a carnival. Since I discovered this one I haven’t stopped listening to it.

1 The Guess Who – These Eyes (1969)

The Guess Who - These Eyes

A great song from a band that many consider the best Canadian band of all times. Written by guitarist Randy Bachman and lead singer Burton Cummings, it was the band’s first major hit internationally, reaching number six in the US. Bachman started writing this one while he was waiting in the living room at the house of a woman he was dating and apparently the woman was taking too long in getting ready, so he sat at the piano and wrote the beginning of the song. The Guess Who are mostly known for their mega hit American Woman, but check These Eyes also, it has one of the best electric piano intros of all times. If there’s ever an accurate list of underrated songs of all times, this one has got to be on the top 10.

Want to know how I discovered this great song? Well, it was right here on Ecency. I have to thanks https://ecency.com/@apkussma for his very good post about songs containing the word Eyes on their titles.

Bonus Song:
Fleetwood Mac – The Chain (1977)

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

I have to thanks I, Tonya for letting me rediscover this excellent piece of music. I haven’t heard this one for so long I had completely forgotten about it. Another one of those songs never released as a single, but better than anything you can listen to anywhere. Incredible what a bunch of weirdos high on drugs in the wee small hours of the morning could manage to accomplish back in 1977. What a great song. RIP Christine McVie.

So, what do you think? Have you ever listened to any of these great songs before? Which one is your favorite? Leave it in the comment section, and if you have another great but underrated song you discovered in 2022, leave it there also.
