Twenty years have passed since Microsoft decided to take a leap into the video game arena. It was not doing badly with the computer market and even today this line is more focused on gaming but in 2001 it was all set to enter the console market, Xbox was another of those revolutions that we could only appreciate after some time and a bit of perspective, before that Sony was already sweeping against the previous kings of the industry and it seemed that the Playstation model was something unstoppable, after all Sony was not only a giant of the entertainment industry but one of the most productive and lethal companies of those years, and what could stop a giant? Another giant, Microsoft that after Xbox and a reception by all the high was going to go for more with its sequel, as well as a continuation, more bloody and entrenched of the console war, and the positions were clear and Microsoft and Sony would lead the legions for the future of video games.

To talk in depth about the sequel to the first Xbox, we must make a digression on how this first console came to market, Microsoft was a revolution both for its console as for marketing and how to promote itself in the video game market, as Sony had done a few years earlier with its PlayStation, but by the time it began to speculate the option of a sequel to s console,
Microsoft began to see problems with their calculations, first of all they had expected a better reception abroad for their first console and although it sold remarkably well in the US it encountered several problems when it jumped to the European and Japanese market, this produced doubts to Microsoft about whether to continue with the Xbox division but there was another even more serious problem, its technology was becoming outdated even with its second console, Project Xenon as it was called at the time was facing difficulties with its interfaces and its way of programming games, so much so that these same problems would lead to some of the most frustrating burdens for Xbox 360.

The launch was brutal, Microsoft had rushed the production of its console to get ahead of Sony and release the Xbox 360 almost a year before the Playstation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, it was a strategy that left the console in good position to dominate homes and the new generation of consoles, something it would half achieve after selling more than 1 million units in less than a year, but presenting serious problems from the start with the arrival of its most talked about hardware problem, the red ring of death meant that Microsoft had to both extend the warranty on its consoles and replace a significant number of others, the profit margin was gone but at least they had won the console race against Sony, hadn't they?

The truth is that after a year of the arrival of the Xbox 360 still did not arrive those iconic video games that had driven the first console, thus gave time for the PlayStation 3 and Sony to arrive and take their piece of the market, the PS3 did not offer greater power than Microsoft's console but if you had planned a huge catalog of exclusive games that proved to be top quality from the first moment. Xbox had to fight back and it was going to be at the beginning of the decade with an entire redesign of the console plus the arrival of one of my favorite failed peripherals, those who remember the Kinect will surely put it as a flaw in Microsoft's strategy but the truth is that this extension of the console was much more aimed at the casual gamer market, does the Nintendo Wii ring a bell? Well yes, Microsoft was going for the new market that had created the Wii but it can be said that the move went wrong in many ways, Xbox was a console for those who were fully engaged in video games and gamers were not so interested in the peripheral but Microsoft decided to sell it along with the console in the same package.

Not all was bad news for the 360, the last decade saw the boom of online gaming and it was Xbox with its Live that led in this aspect, a much more polished interface and servers that allowed uninterrupted play for a small fee per month, The Xbox 360 would be an important step to gain a foothold in the gaming industry and it can be said that also built along with Sony and Nintendo all the culture that we live today in the medium, It is in these years where they popularized the conferences where new games were announced or the Game Awards, the whole culture spreading around the world by the hand of the consoles, but still missing the other side of the story, one of a company that is forced to find new ways to respond to market demands and competitors, Sony is next on the list.
