My current issue with Hawkeye and its relevance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Diversity in the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE: The Changing Face of Marvel

For many, many years I have considered myself a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maybe at first it may sound like movies for kids and since I was born at the right time to enjoy all the development, that would explain why to this day I still watch this style of movies, but for me the reality is different.

Marvel managed to build a whole universe of movies and series that easily surpass any saga you can think of, no matter if you are a kid, a teenager or an adult: If what you want is an endless and constantly developing story, this is what Marvel has created and that's why I remain a fan of this company to this day.

Their latest release, Hawkeye, has made me conflicted as I don't quite understand the motive behind it all. In this post I want to tell you about my experience with the series so far since they released the first 2 episodes on Disney+ and also talk a bit about why I feel this series wasn't that necessary for the universe.

image.png

Let's start with the Marvel Universe: what exactly is it?

Many, many years ago, specifically in 2012, we got the first installment of what would be the basis of the universe: The Avengers. Here we got to see for the first time on screen many superheroes of the Marvel universe; Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, BW and Hawkeye. From here (well, actually, there are movies before this one too) a lot of movies have come out that always interconnect all these superheroes.

They are all completely different and have very different lifestyles. Marvel in my opinion didn't just get caught up in the idea of creating a generic superhero movie, shots here, shots there, bad guy loses. No. There's a lot more depth here and it's building something much bigger than you think.

image.png
Diversity in the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE: The Changing Face of Marvel

As the years have gone by more and more movies came out adding more data and information about everything surrounding these superheroes. Facts as unnecessary as what would be a supporting character like Happy, but over time, he has become a beloved character to the community just because he has been there throughout the movies. From Iron Man to Far From Home, are there really supporting characters in Marvel movies?.

And not only that, there is even mention of characters who died in previous installments. Agent Coulson is a character who died in The Avengers (2012) and yet there was still mention of this character in What If.

What do I mean by all this? That everything is connected. Everything is in the same universe and this is the great thing, a progressive interconnected story and that, no matter how much difference there is between the release dates of some movie or series, they are all connected to each other, adding much more important and incredible data to this universe.

image.png

This is where Hawkeye comes in.

The last few Marvel series have represented very important events. In Wandavision we could see how Wanda was consumed by madness and her progression to become a powerful ally (or enemy?). In Loki we can see how the timeline of the Marvel universe was destroyed and now gave way to the multiverse, and not to mention the events of What If, where despite being an animated series, there is a theory that due to the events that occurred in Loki, triggered other things in What If (I will not tell anything because I do not want to spoil anyone). Things that have been very important for the Marvel universe and gives much more hype in the following installments.

Hawkeye has the same problem as Falcon & The Winter Soldier, in my opinion, these series lag behind with the in-universe relevance issue.

image.png

In Hawkeye we are told what Hawkeye has done after his retirement as an avenger and his current life, little else. In the first episode we get to see how he spends time with his kids, walks here and walks there and has common problems. I have no problem with that, I could easily digest this series as if it were a sitcom, but the detail is that we are still within the Marvel universe. Something interesting has to happen.

But this is not the case. The only relevant thing in the series is the inclusion of a new heroine: Kate Bishop. She's basically the same as Hawkeye, but worse. An inexperienced girl who most likely becomes a heroine because that's the way fate intended, and that's fine; but let's look at it from another perspective.

Why make this series at the moment when multiversal events are happening in other movies that your same production is making? Compared to Loki or What If, Hawkeye so far is nothing more than a joke if we talk about the important events that are happening elsewhere in the same universe.

Did you know that this little dog is a professional actor? His name is Jolt and he even has a stunt double. You can check out his Instagram profile here: https://www.instagram.com/jolt.of.genius/

My problem is that this series lags behind in terms of importance and relevance within the Marvel universe, and this makes it, at least for me, boring. Maybe it's not so bad after all, since only the first 2 episodes are out, but I'm afraid that it will be a series like Falcon & The Winter Soldier where the only relevant thing is Falcon's speech of inclusion and rejection of racism. Hawkeye is giving me airs that it will only be a series to divert attention from the others and try to give a chance to Clint Barton, who, in my opinion, is a pretty good character.

*Even in some comic, I think in Secret Wars, Hawkeye talked about hitting a multiversal being with an arrow: Galactus.

Thanks Twitter

Despite being an interesting character, I think it is not the right time to give him this development, because as I have already said on several occasions: He lags far behind.

I don't want to be too harsh on the series as it's just starting, it will be good to pass the time and, as with Arcane, I'm watching it together with @jotaunive whenever I have free time. If they're not going to do something really shocking with this series or give really cool discoveries about some already known character, I hope they at least give some good development to this character, or at least have enough comedy (I hope they don't focus too much on Kate).

Thank you for reading.

Saludos Man!

Ahora que mencionas a DC, ¿has visto The Flash?
