Quiero que solo lo imagines por un momento, pagas una suscripción mensual tal cual como lo hicieras en Netflix, HBO o Disney Plus pero en vez de ver series y películas te dan un catalogo extenso de videojuegos que puedes disfrutar sin preocupaciones, mes a mes actualizándose con más títulos y hasta llegando a tener estrenos exclusivos con títulos de las más altas producciones. Todo suena como una especie de heaven para el consumidor promedio en especial si recordamos los precios que alcanzan año tras año los juegos AAA, pero hay una pregunta más interesante dirigida a los creadores de este sistema, ¿Es rentable? ¿Siquiera es sostenible al largo plazo?

Eso es quizá lo que se estén cuestionando varios directivos de Microsoft después de que su Game Pass para la más nueva Xbox Series además también de la Xbox One y PC alcanzara 5 años desde su lanzamiento, un experimento que no ha dejado indiferente a nadie y ha alcanzado varios elogios a la empresa de Bill Gates, en esencia, el Game Pass estaba haciendo mucho más asequible el jugar videojuegos, ofreciendo un catálogo inicial de más de 150 juegos que se van expandiendo cada mes, la forma de jugar estos títulos es quizá lo que más me ha gustado, lejos del streaming y mucho más centrado en que los jugadores sean “propietarios” de los juegos que quieran jugar durante el periodo que tengan el Game Pass activo, de esta forma los juegos se deben instalar en los discos duros de la consola pero se tiene una experiencia mucho más fluida y sobre todo personal, nos deshacemos de la inmediatez del streaming pero a cambio ganamos algo mucho más cercano y personal.

Y eso contando que en esta suscripción mensual no tendremos solo los juegos independientes que Microsoft hay dejado guardados en un cajón por años, sino que títulos tan clásicos como de altísima calidad como la saga Bioshock o Gears al lado de otros más modernos como Halo 5 están disponibles al instante después de pagar una suscripción de 9.99$, hay variedad y calidad para cada tipo de usuario que quiera adentrarse a Xbox y Microsoft además de que es un servicio al que Microsoft le está soltando bastante la billetera, con la adquisición de varios estudios grandes como Bethesda para empezar a desarrollar juegos exclusivos con los que rellenar su catálogo, parece que Microsoft está mucho más cerca de hacer una dura pelea con Sony con la llegada de este servicio, que con la más reciente generación de consolas comandada por Xbox Series pretende hacerse con la corona del mercado de sobremesa.

¿Le conviene a Microsoft esta jugada?

El costo de crear nuevos videojuegos es uno que habitualmente se tiende a asumir demasiado, pero la realidad es que hoy en dia es uno de los medios de entretenimiento más costosos de producir y en un mercado que no ha llegado a ser tan extenso como el cine estos costos suelen ser la diferencia entre un fracaso estrepitoso o un éxito en el mercado, ahora bien, Microsoft pretende crear nuevos exclusivos para sus consolas y para el Game Pass asumiendo los costos de toda la producción para luego darlo de gratis y esperar que las suscripciones del Game Pass cubran al menos una parte de lo que el gigante se gasta, es una apuesta arriesgada pero con un buen precedente en frente, y es que Netflix ha venido demostrando en los últimos años que si se puede balancear los costos para tener unos éxitos en su servicio de Streaming al mismo tiempo de producir sus propias producciones y tener una calidad constante entre ellas.

Recordemos que Game Pass nace con la idea de atraer nuevos jugadores a las filas de Xbox por lo que Microsoft debe tener en cuenta que es una apuesta que en sus primeros años ha podido salirle con un saldo negativo y hasta un gasto superior en muchas producciones, sin embargo pienso que hoy en 2021 y con el buen paso con el que ha empezado Xbox Series, creo que el Game Pass está ganando cada vez más importancia en la estrategia de llevar a la consola hasta la corona, si no me creen miren los títulos que está dispuesto a dar Microsoft cada mes como parte de su política a favor de los jugadores, es algo increíble ver juegos AAA cada mes teniendo en cuenta lo que le cuesta a Microsoft tenerlos gratis en este sistema, no sé, quizá los 15 millones de suscriptores que tuvo en sus primeros años convenza a Microsoft de seguir dándole alas a un proyecto como este, igualmente nos conviene enormemente a todos los jugadores y hasta yo mismo estoy pensando en comprar una Xbox en los próximos años.
