As I browse the internet my screen lights up with a face that looks realistically familiar and a copy of a leading supporter of Bitcoin and crypto.

This time round he is making me an offer that is too hard to resist.
He is sharing his crypto address and asking the audience to send him crypto on the displayed address.

The offer is too good to resist

The offer is that anyone who sends crypto on this address would receive the double amount in the next few hours.
The offer is too good to resist right?
Wait, this is a crypto scam!

The old tried and tested scams

Users receive communication via notifications or come across posts or publications promising them an airdrop. When they click on a link in the text the users are lead to a scam site that dupes them into losing their crypto.
Another part of the scam plays out as an email arriving in your inbox that tells you to take some kind of action which would lead you to lose your crypto.

The deception is AI powered now

Earlier these fraudulent emails and online texts were relatively easier to spot as they would have typos and badly written text.
However that is a thing of the past. Using easily accessible AI tools these scammers are able to spin quite convincing texts for landing pages and emails.
Not only that since they are so easy and quick to generate, scammers who are new to the field can also come out with clickbait worthy content.

The use of AI tools for scamming is rampant

The easy availability of the AI tools and practically no learning curve makes the tech both easy to use and exploit.

Deceptive AI powered youtube adverts

Using AI it is easy to create avatars of celebrities and trusted crypto influencers.
If you trust someone you are more likely to believe what a person says.

So if you see a celebrity endorsing a project or an airdrop a number of users are likely to trust and follow and take part in the project or the airdrop

So imagine an influential crypto person asking you to send them your BTC or ETH at a particular wallet with a promise of getting double the funds in return.

These kinds of videos are easy to create using AI and by way of setting ad accounts these can be made to reach a large audience.

How to protect yourself from such scams

Do try to remember that money doubling schemes are a scam.
Most people fall for them for the lure of easy money.
This is the difficult part however there is no substitute for being able to think with your head and not your heart when it comes to jumping onto too good to be true crypto offers.

Keep your crypto in offline wallets

Keeping your crypto in hardware wallets is the way to go forward specially as the scams are getting more and more realistic and good at creating a screen of deception.

USe burner wallets to claim airdrops

Use separate wallets for claiming airdrops that could have zero crypto in them or just enough to cover the gas fee.

Use separate social media accounts for airdrop

If possible have a separate twitter (X.com) account for claiming your airdrop this way your main account remains safe.
Mostly hackers use the ad networks on the social media networks to target users interested in a particular topic be it crypto or airdrops.

Use wallet protection tools

Tools like Wallet Guard can help protect your crypto by warning you about suspicious links that can drain your wallet.

Give yourself proper rest

Lack of sleep and a sleep deprived brain are a scammer's best friend.
When you are not giving yourself proper sleep your sleep deprived mind is likely to make errors and make you click on links that you are not supposed to click on.
By working in this state you are being a great help to the scammers.
It is time you stopped doing this.

Stay safe and make sure you keep your crypto safe too.
