Given my longstanding fascination with professional wrestling, learning about its history always feels like being transported in time.
The Genesis Era, as it is called, represents the emergence of this heroic sport, and traces its origins to France in the early 1800s. Then, wrestling was not just about strength and skill, but a specter of athleticism that mixed performance and acrobatics to keep the audience at the edge of their seat.
What strikes me most is how people like Martin “Farmer” Burns and Frank Gotch came into play.
It was not only in terms of wrestling that these pioneers were great, they laid a foundation on which wrestling evolved from being merely an attraction into a real sport.
As for Burns, who started from zero on the farm, he embodies the toughness and resilience associated with this era. Indeed his struggles against neighborhood strongmen before finishing up as a hero of wrestling are nothing short of inspiring and a true embodiment of the American dream.
Not also forgetting Frank Gotch who became the World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion at one point and then took it to greater heights.
Crowds followed Gotch wherever he went for a match, raising wrestling to a national pastime status.
These matches with George Hackenschmidt among others enthralled fans, forever setting him as one of the best wrestlers ever lived.
But the Genesis Era, despite all its glitter and glamour, was also a period of controversies and crisis. It was as tumultuous as it was exciting, with disputed championships and rivalries going beyond the wrestling ring.

However, it kept growing, making more fans all over the world.
Reflecting on this era I can only stand in awe for those wrestlers who paved way for our current state. Their passion for what they did, urge to win no matter how grave their ordeal may be, serve as an inspiration to me; this reminds of me that hard work plus consistency are major factors leading to prominence.
I treasure the Genesis Era of professional wrestling deeply. It is an expression of human ambition at its greatest extent and a testament of how sports can span generations.
The mere thought of its history helps me realize why wrestling is timeless.
