A Day At The Hospital

Not the Friday I expected

Yeah, that was sarcasm, clearly. I mean, I don't think anyone enjoys waiting at the doc or hospital half of the day, especially not when you feel overheated wearing these stupid masks again. Anyway what happened? I have mentioned before that I take blood pressure meds, they prescribed them to me when I had an extremely high blood pressure after taking just 2 prednisone tablets, prescribed for my arm, which at the time they thought was nerve related. It felt close to having carpal tunnel syndrome, so to me it made total sense.

The pain was over

After the meds started to do their work, it took about 2 weeks, the pain in my arm was over. So I already knew this was not from carpal tunnel syndrome but probably my blood pressure literally pressing at some part causing that pain. Whatever, I felt good and rarely had headaches as well for a while. I think this all happened at the end of 2022 somewhere by the way so I've been taking these meds for a year more or less. Never has the doc told me that I should go to the cardiologist to check the doses etc. Although I've been to the doc a few times to get my refill, and told the doc about the higher pressure some times, they never even bothered to measure it or check something. I just left it, I should have been more pro active.

New (or worse) symptoms

For a little while I already experience tingly feelings in my arm, hand and often it was very uncomfortable and painful. It usually seemed to come from my shoulder and I thought it was due to the lack of a proper desk again. The hight compared to chair is not ideal.

The last two days, my heart started acting weird. I had this before but just a few times and never more than once at the same day. This time it came at least ten times in a few days and much heavier. Add to that my painful arm AND later chest pain, you can guess what I was afraid of right?

We ordered a treadmill

A desire of my boyfriend has been a treadmill at home as he often just can't get out long enough to have a proper walk during the hours that it's nice to enjoy the scenery. I never really longed for one, I'm a bigger fan of bicycles myself so my plan was getting a decent bike now that we have a storage room.

But we have the space for it now in one of the bedrooms and it has this extra massage belt which my back and hips will be very thankful for. We bought it with an instalment plan for a year because then it's just like having a gym membership, haha. I see it as an investment for the health.

And then..

We went shopping for the last time to get some stuff for my boyfriend who will soon be out on a business trip. We had a few tapas on the way back home and then I started to feel discomfort. I felt weird, I can't really explain it but I knew it wasn't good. At some point, I felt as if I was going to faint soon and I asked my boyfriend to finish his drink so we can go home.

My headache already appeared an hour earlier and I took a paracetamol for it, which I had the feeling could have been the reason for the weird feeling but I can't tell for sure. We drove home and I felt very uncomfortable, I started to stress because I realized my boyfriend will be away from home soon and I don't want to feel ill in case anything happens.

Slept it off

Woke up with extreme puffy eyes as well as very painful arms (both) and I knew I couldn't not see a doctor today. I measured my blood pressure, and like yesterday evening, it was way too high, but lower than in the evening. As I had my medication, I thought I'd be able to get through the hours until I had the appointment.

To the doc

Fully prepared with a document with the symptoms and some things I've noticed that could be related, translated to Spanish to make sure they understand it all, I went to the doctor. He read the pages and asked if I saw a cardiologist, I said no. He wanted to make an ECG and I just underwent it hoping for nothing too worrying. When she printed the result, she walked to the doctor and I saw by the look on their faces that it surely wasn't good, later my boyfriend told me that he saw the doc walk in and out and he knew it was not good because of the look on his face, sigh.

She did the measurement to see my blood pressure and I was shocked to see it reaching 165/98, that was the highest I've had. Immediately they gave me two tablets under my tongue and I was told to go to the emergency room in a clinic in the city. Don't worry she said, but hey, of course I did!

Early pick up

I called the school to say I needed to go to the ER right away and that our daughter needed to be picked up immediately. This went super smooth, at home I grabbed a few things in case I was going to stay there, which I didn't hope clearly, but hey, it would save my boyfriend a drive to get the stuff at home.

Then the waiting began, it was so hot inside and the high temperature made me feel even worse, thankfully, the waiting room was next to the door outside so I went out to get fresh air 5 times or so while my boyfriend kept an eye on the screen to see if it was my turn.

Finally, my turn

I was prioritized in triage, because I clearly got called in sooner than others who sat there before we arrived. Sucks for them but I'm happy that I didn't have to sit there anymore, it was very uncomfortable. The lady who did the talks there didn't really listen, maybe even misunderstood some things even though everything was written down well, except for the one tablet that I was given, but that was not on me.

My boyfriend started to get very annoyed and it may have been a good thing she told him and the girl to go to the waiting room. I expected to get the ECG but a better one, as my first doc had told me, but they only gave me an IV with pain meds for my chest pain and two tablets, which ones is unknown, as they didn't write it down, sigh.

Hours later

When the IV was empty, she replaced it with one without meds, while I waited until a doc returned to see me. I already felt much better from the first IV and/or tablets they gave me so I was hoping that one measurement of my BP would be enough. Thankfully, this was the case. Although still too high, it was acceptable and I could go home with the note to see the cardiologist for follow up as well as another medication to take along with my current ones.

I was about to make the appointment but when the hospital was overcrowded I already start to feel dizzy again and I could not find it so I decided to either call for the appointment OR try my luck for an appointment elsewhere, nearby. I got lucky because an hour later I had an appointment for the clinic 5 mins from home. I was not pointed there because it's another chain and they have contracts with certain clinics so this was not optional going there today.

Taking it easy

So where I had plans to catch up on comments and stuff like that, I will now publish this post and drop myself on the couch to chill and watch some tv instead as it was a very long and exhausting day. I have loads to do tomorrow but I don't want to worry about it and keep my calm.

If I respond slowly, don't take it personal, I'm just trying to keep my cool :)

Have a good weekend!

damn... i hope you get better soon and find out what's actually the issue here.

I used to skip doctor's when i was younger and simply sleep, eat normal for a couple of days and that's it. As i grow older i realize more and more that we need to take better care of ourselves and ofc we need to do the usual checkups. I decided starting next week to visit 2-3 Doctors of different specialties for just that, even those i am quite bored/frustrated and even nervus with the procedures.

Thoracic outlet syndrome can cause pain in the shoulder and tingling in the arm and fingers, and it can be exacerbated by a desk chair mismatch if the set-up makes you drop your head forward or roll your shoulders forward. Something to consider. Hope you feel well soon!

Sounds like something I should definitely keep in mind because I very well know for sure that it's not always starting when sitting too long behind the desk. Like yesterday, this started waking up (which was new in terms of with this extreme pain).. I'm going to take notes on everything now until I see the cardiologist in 10 days to make sure he will not overlook things.

Thanks for this!

I sure hope it's something simple, like TOS, and not your heart.

That's not a fun experience at all. I hope you feel better and that your blood pressure and pain get under control! Certainly don't skip that cardiologist appointment.

Not at all, it was scary. I would like to say I do but I woke up with puffy eyes again and a small headache (not extreme) just took my two meds together and we'll see how it goes today.

I won't skip it, they should have sent me there way sooner but I could've known this with the docs here, just happy to prescribe you meds and more meds without proper follow ups. It's sad actually that even with private care you deal with this shit.

Primary care physicians should know the proper time to refer their patients to specialists. Of course, they can handle common and basic problems - that's what they're trained to do. However, once their own knowledge is exhausted, it's time to send the patient to a specialist who can handle the problem before it worsens.

So sorry you had to go through all this, I really hope the pain goes away and the blood pressure gets back to normal. It is important to take care of yourself and coming from someone who knows...
Ignoring things and skip making doctor apointment is not good.

I hope it gets better and that they find out what the issue really is causing this.

Feel better 💕💕💕

BIG hugs and love 🤗❤️🤗

Hope you feel better soon 😘

(not) sorry to say so but when do they stop with this mask wearing. I can't help but feel that it makes people less comfortable ( and that is an understatement ).

Hope you can find a way to relax more and get some more exercise in.

Abrazo!

Thanks!

Hear hear about the mask wearing. I was dreaded to realize that when I had to see the doc (and later hospital) it meant wearing that stupid thing. Recently I heard that they even went as far as let women give birth with these things and make a true fuzz when they couldn't manage anymore.

I personally can't manage to take a sprint with that shit on my mouth, heck even a steady walk will make me want to pull it off immediately.

Even though it was a private hospital, it was overcrowded (even more so when I could go finally) and I went outside every 15 minutes or so to grab some air, I cannot stay inside that long without getting in trouble.

I remember feeling lack of oxygen quite often when we had to wear them everywhere in Budapest at the time of pandemic. I did not see it coming that it would be reintroduced but let's hope it stays in hospitals only.. But better, remove it in total..

So far the blood pressure has been under control but I'm still having loads of arm pain and that's a bit scary still. I hope it will fade though, so that I won't feel uncomfortable until seeing the cardiologist next week.

THanks for stopping by!

Recently I heard that they even went as far as let women give birth with these things and make a true fuzz when they couldn't manage anymore.

Insanity, if you ask me.

Let the doctors wear that stuff, not the patients.

I never felt comfortable with them and wore them as little as possible. It felt wrong from the start.

I have always felt that breathing is living ( having been born prematurely ( 6 to 7 weeks early ) as one of a twin, with 'underdeveloped' lungs, whatever that means and having gone through all kinds of lung disorders and dis eases since being a baby have made me extra aware of that.

My lungs are now stronger than the average pair of lungs but they sure are sensitive and they need air.

Hope you manage to find a way to feel better soon and a way to get rid of ( heavy ) medication, soonish.

Have you ever looked into mind-body work? I realize it's easier said than done ( It's a long process ) but knowing that a lot of so called 'chronic illnesses' might indeed be curable sure is relieving.

If you're open to it, I suggest giving the 'Curable' app a try.

Sending healing power your way ☀️

Insanity indeed! Looking back on my own experiences I would have probably died on the spot lol. I'm making a joke out of it now but it's just not funny at all, is it?

I was just walking with my daughter and thought I let's make an appointment for you at the public clinic as I still have to do it for something that's not urgent, and then I realized I can't even enter without a stupid mask.. didn't have one with me..

You should then know better than anyone how important breathing is. My boyfriend was interested in the Wim Hof technique quite some time ago already, I always laughed at him for breathing so weird but it helps. Now I feel like I'm the stupid one because last week I tried doing that once (with his app open) and I saw on my smartwatch that I constantly had 100% oxygen in my blood.

Regular meds are surely not something I prefer, heck, they prescribed me tramadol (with something else) for months for my back issues. It was good to have it at first but after some time I halved my intake as I thought I could manage (it was the case) until after some time I had the feeling that my back started to hurt because it was time for my next pill. I stopped taking them completely a week ago, guess what? It's very manageable without it.

I will download the app for sure as I'm very on top of what I eat, how much I move and my blood pressure at the moment. I'm trying to see triggers etc, taking into account that I should skip these coffees (only one today, lol) and in the weekend, I can add more walking when the treadmill arrives. Until then, I'm pushing myself to go on mandatory walks twice a day.

I've been wearing a smartwatch for quite some time, hence the knowledge that my oxygen levels drop when I feel bad.. The thing that I definitely wish to incorporate is breathing exercises but I feel so stupid doing them (just being honest). Anyway, thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it :)

Un abrazo y !PIZZA :)

Yes that's it. You can try it for free, for a week or so l, but I decided to go for a 1 year membership.

I believe I discovered it, about half a year ago, researching ( so called ) 'chronic pain', after having read a book called "Healing Back Pain".

Honestly, I know very well that part (if not all ) of the issues I'm facing over the years are related to trauma, I know it because I've also experienced several times in my life that when I felt happy, I didn't even need to do any effort to loose weight, just an example. So even decades ago, it was crystal clear to me that stress/trauma builds up and blocks things.

I've been doing much better with my back since I quit the tramadol a week ago, I was not aiming to take pills for the blood pressure forever either, instead I'm focussed on a healthier diet and exercising more. My boyfriend also had a period of blood pressure meds and he was also able to tamper them off by himself, I hope I can say the same later this year :) the sooner the better!

I'm constantly monitoring what I do and what effect it has and writing down symptoms so I have a clear image and stuff to compare ..

Thanks for the tip, will check the app later, wanted to make sure I was about to download the right one first!

I'm just getting back up to speed, this sounded like angina or CHF, do you have a firm diagnosis? 🙏

I'm so far behind as well but will catch up in the next days ..

I don't have any diagnosis because they basically gave me an IV with a medication for the pain in my heart and two more tablets (unknown which ones, they didn't write it in the paperwork, lol) and waited for the BP to drop enough to let me go.

I've been taking an extra medication since Saturday and it's been stabilizing since. I work up with a BP I don't even remember ever seeing when measuring it in the past, lol. Seems to work well..

But also been going for 2 walks a day in the afternoon and after dinner as well as paying attention to coffee intake, more water, healthy food. Have an appointment with the cardiologist next week and figured I'd monitor well so he has a clear view on what's happening.

Since the BP is well, I have only had 1 day of pain in my arms (Sunday) but no heart issues anymore. Confident I can make a chance for the better..

Thanks for stopping by !LUV
