Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Sucks!

Suspected carpal tunnel syndrome

Unfortunately it seems that I have symptoms matching the carpal tunnel syndrome again. I had this before when I was pregnant of my first child. Thankfully, after the pregnancy it disappeared and it never came back, until a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it means my hand hurts a lot during the day. At first it was only a few hours each day and I could manage by using a brace at night and taking some painkillers when needed. This went on for a few week until 1 and 1/2 weeks ago the pain has increased tremendously and driving me nuts during the whole day. It's affecting almost everything I do, not only doing my work but also holding a glass or plate, and even though I automatically keep holding heavy things several times a day, I immediately get punished by the pain that follows. I rely on my boyfriend for so many things and I can't stand having to ask for help for simple things. He's very helpful and gets a bit mad or annoyed when I keep using that hand for heavy things, in my defense, I do these things on auto pilot.

Time to face reality

This was not going away anytime soon, so I made an appointment at the medical clinic for yesterday and went to see a doctor. He checked my arm and my hand and my wrist and he suspected carpal tunnel syndrome immediately. Funny thing is that this doctor didn't speak one word English and I managed to get through the visit without the assistance of my Google translate app. Which made me a little proud, haha. Anyway, I need to make an appointment for an X-ray in another Clinic to confirm the diagnosis. I can only say that this is the first thing that I remembered, this pain is so typical and I didn't miss it all these years.

Medication

The doctor also prescribed medication, I had no I do what he prescribed until I picked up at the pharmacy. One of the tablets he prescribed is for vitamin deficiencies and the other one is prednisone. I was a bit shocked because I never had Prednisone before and it seems like a heavy medication to take when looking at the list of side effects and withdrawal symptoms. Thankfully, I only got prescribed 5 mg per tablets twice a day and for now I'm just hoping that it will relieve some of the pain as the pain has definitely increased during the last days.

Armrests needed

It also make me realize that I can't keep working on the desk with a chair without armrests because probably this is the reason that the carpal tunnel syndrome came back in the first place. I kept postponing buying a decent chair not only because I could not find one but also because I didn't want to buy one just because I needed one and then find out it was not suitable after all.
It's so much easier when you can go to all kinds of furniture outlets and stuff like that to check all the chairs they have and compare them, but without a car it's pretty much impossible to get to the shopping boulevards, let alone to visit several.

Time for a change

Today I suddenly felt that I should check one of the furniture shops that also sells online and to my surprise one of the more expensive range chairs was now offered with a 40% discount meaning it was only 20 bucks more expensive than the cheaper one I almost bought a few months ago. The reason that I didn't buy that one in the first place was Simply because it looks like a way overpriced chair that would not bring me the comfort I need.

It's been proven to be quite difficult finding the right chair that has the right height of arm rests matching the desk I work on. This is the reason my boyfriend's passed on this desk to me because he absolutely loved working standing part of the day as it's a sit-stand desk. Too bad for him that his chair is too low for this desk, meaning his arms and neck were constantly hurting.

I pulled the trigger today

I decided I could work on this desk for a little while using one of the chairs in the living room from the dining table and then buy a decent chair in a few months. But moving countries has been very costly and therefore I kept postponing. It was time to listen to my body and just buy a decent chair and today I pulled the trigger. Now I only have to wait for another week or so and hope that it's indeed suitable for this workplace. The measurements seem to be correct, but it's always a surprise until I can test it properly.

Waiting

I really hope this will bring relief because it's been nearly impossible to type even 30 minutes. Several times a day, I do exercises meant for carpal tunnel syndrome but so far, I have not found any big relief. Maybe it takes a bit longer so I will continue doing them. To give my hand some more relief, I used speech to text to write the biggest part of this blog and only edited and added the remaining parts later. It's not really ideal so far but this way at least I can continue writing (read: talking, lol). I'm not sure if I can get used to it but I guess I will have to at least until this chair arrives.

To be continued..

I am sorry to read about this. It sounds like something that I suffer from sometimes, but I never thought it was anything more than the fact that my wrists are weak, and I need to strengthen the, as my yoga teacher recommended. I'll do some research on this myself.
I'm happy you found something to give you relief, and hopefully, you will not have to take those meds for an extended time.
All good wishes:)

Hi dear @millycf1976, I'm sorry for responding this late but some comments I read and wanted to comment on later (due to the pain typing) but then I forgot for a few days. Your comment is appreciated though :)

I yet have to receive the official diagnoses as the scan can't take place until another 3 weeks from now. I believe they can't see CTS on the scan but check for other things to rule them out (if I understood it correctly). But it's a very recognizable pain that I had in the first pregnancy as well.

If you do yoga, I'm sure you will find some relief in certain exercises. I found a video on how to help the muscles when you have CTS, it was a guy in a blue shirt, would need to find the link (it's on my phone) if you're interested I will drop it later. They help but it's not a full remedy.

I started taking golden lattes for a few days now (2x a day) and hoping that the tumeric will bring relief to the inflammation in a few weeks (I read that it can take some weeks before you notice a change) but at least that's very nice to drink (found a good mix which I love) and it's nothing heavy like the prednisone the doc gave me. I'm still shocked about my heavy response for the 4 tablets I took (extreme high blood pressure and heavy leg cramps). I stopped immediately, Very determined to give the golden lattes a real try :)

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you will find some relief in the exercises because once it gets bad, it's not easy to get rid of, I really notice that now too, the pain came back heavily after 2 days when I quit taking the prednisone and I'm sometimes struggling to type normally. I feel disabled as writing is my thing.

Have a good evening! <3

Thanks @erikah. I'm happy to meet you @thisismylife. I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and dupuytren's disease (DD) not too long ago. CTS, as was explained to me, was related to my body positioning. Between work and school, I spent a lot of time at a desk. Eventually, my poor posture caught up with me.

I understand CTS to be the result of poor circulation flow through your hands. As time progresses, you get less blood flow. If you stop working at a desk and do other things, the blood flow returns and you have normal circulation again. However, continue working at a bad position, and the blood flow won't restore itself as it might have before. Your body becomes accustomed to the "new" normal.

I got an ergo evaluation and work and ended up getting new keyboards, mice, and am now training myself in my new body positions. CTS hasn't gotten better for me yet, but it certainly hasn't gotten worse. Dupuytren's disease is another story entirely.

I can't wait to read about your results with the chair. I hope things work well for you! One thing I learned that does help a lot is to just take more frequent breaks. Get up, walk around, stretch and flex. It gives your body time to breathe and get the blood flowing properly. Also, one thing my doctor did to alleviate some of the CTS symptoms was an injection of cortisol into the base of my wrist. It definitely made things better while I was learning to handle my new body positions at the desk.

Hi @scholaris, nice to meet you too. I truly appreciate you taking the time to connect, I'm sorry it took a day to get back to you but that's simply because I didn't want to rush my comment and also didn't want to type too much today.

I can related to the bad positioning for several years now, I could only work in a decent office setting when my boyfriend was done working (so late evenings sometimes and weekends), but for the rest, I sat on the dinging table (too high) a lot of neck and back pain because of that. Until I stopped that completely for a while. This is worse though, as it keeps nagging even if I don't do anything if it's already painful that day.

I've been throwing my arms around constantly, doing exercises that I found especially for CTS. Even though I don't have the diagnosis yet (still need to get an appointment for the scan/xray not sure what the doc prescribed as I can't read it lol). I was already taking much more breaks for months honestly and not stay behind a desk for hours in a row, but I did that for years before I stopped doing that so I guess I'm late to act on it.

The chair probably takes at least another week (that is unless it comes sooner than they mentioned) meanwhile I will keep doing these stretches several times a day and keep moving around as well. I don't feel the need to sit behind the desk much anyway now, simply because it starts hurting after 10 minutes. I'm trying the speech to text thing for 2 days now, works quite good just need to get adjusted to it.

I got prednisone 5mg btw, I first thought that helps with the pain, I know it's different now, 2 days in and I'm having so shitty side effects that I will not take one more tablet . I know it should not be stopped at once but with the 4 tablets I had, I will take my chances, don't want that stuff anymore and will just keep upping the vitamin intake instead (have been doing that for a few days too).

Anyway, have to stop typing sorry. Would like to learn more about your experiences if you want to connect maybe we can exchange discord IDs?

Have a good evening!

Sure thing. I’m getting ready for nights but I’ll write more later. You definitely want to check out getting a cortisol injection while you change your ergonomics. I feel tingles and only random shocks right now, but it’s at least not getting worse. Also check out getting a stint for your wrist when you’re not working.

Hi there, I don't think I will consider the shot if it turns out to be carpal tunnel syndrome indeed. Why? Well, last week I had a shitty (and scary) reaction to the very low dose of 5 mg prednisone.. it only took 4 tablets and my blood pressure went through the roof! I never had one this high and I could not function for almost 2 days until it slowly faded. On top of that, the cramps in my legs were horrifying, like not funny!

The blood pressure was a good scare and it actually made me realize I'm not keen on any meds if I can change some things myself. I started taking tumeric paste daily now, hoping it will help with the inflammation. My appointment at the hospital for the scan (I think it's to rule out other things) is not until halfway through November. Until then, hoping to sit it out and see improvement.

My chair arrived early, so that helps a bit but still need to do a few hours on the computer max to not be in a lot of pain. Trying to find a new balance, I'll hopefully figure it out soon :)

Hope you are doing well!

Carpel tunnel sucks that's for sure! I've got some experience with it but in a minor way. My dad has gotten surgery for carpal tunnel twice now and he has enjoyed a much better range of motion and pain in his hands and wrists. Obviously that's a bit extreme but hopefully yours can resolve with a bit of a change to diet and adding some additional steps to get things flexing and moving.

I am not battling carpal tunnel, but I did make adjustments to my library routine in an effort to address shoulder pain by avoiding repetitive motion which aggravates it. I hope the chair helps.

I hope your adjustments helped! For my neck and shoulder issues I had to do the same about 6 months ago as we were in the process of prepping our emigration and I could only work on the dining table (way too high and therefore causing issues). In the end, I could only work when the office was free in the evening as otherwise I'd be in pain within an hour. It's hard to shake these things off once they appear and usually (my experience at least) not gone in a few days.

Medication? What about lots of hand and arm therapy? I was diagnosed with tendentious and received worker's comp benefits that included lots of hand therapy. I loved it. Arm massages, hot wax dips, heavy hot towels, ultrasound massager, and more. Not much exercise like some PT. Massage nap time therapy on those arms? :)

LOL, I had no idea what the prednison does to be honest, until I googled it. I can safely say that day 2 and I'm done with that shit already, not going to take any more .. these side effects are worse than the pain even though it's more relaxed now since today.

I have been doing exercises for a week now myself, doctor didn't mention any but that may very well be because he first wants to check the scan and take it from there.

My boyfriend gave me a few arm massages and they really helped. Not sure how bad it will come back in the next days, but I'm not continuing the prednisone.. rather do these exercises all day long :)

Whoa, smart web search!
All of it is caused by lack of circulation. The more exercise you do the more massages or other things like hot and cold water do to increase circulation is what helps. I even believe in swinging your arms in a circular motion to centrifugally force blood into your extremity fingertips. Try it and see if the tingling goes away.
