Remember all the Dutch delights I bought?

Well, not all of the products are real delights but some of them are just reminding me of my childhood and how much I liked them at the time. One of the things I showed you when I received my box filled with Dutch goodies was "Aardappel Anders" which directly translates to "Potato different". It's as simple as a sauce in a pot which you can buy in a few flavors and then add to your potatoes, shove it in the oven and voila, in 30 minutes you have yourself a dish with very little effort. At least, that goes for the sauce. The rest takes a bit of preparation even with the ready to use sauce in a pot.

Ham & Cheese flavor

I ordered the ham & cheese flavor only this time, I ordered two as I didn't remember if I used to need 1 or two pots for the oven dishes. I prepped some potatoes by cooking them (not fully, so they are quite easy to slice) and then covering the baking tin with a layer of potatoes and add a layer of the sauce on top. I added one more layer of potatoes and covered it with a nice thick layer of the sauce. I decided to give it another twist as I know our daughter loves broccoli prepped in the oven, therefore I added a layer of broccoli on top to test this out. I baked it for 30 to 40 minutes on 200 degrees Celsius.

Not as good as I remembered

I think we all have these things that were so good during our childhood and when eating it in our adult life, it's not that special anymore, well this was one of these things for me. Not that it was bad or horrible, not at all, it just was not as great as I remembered it was. I also blame my attempt on adding some broccoli on top for that because normally the sauce is nice and brown by the time the dish is done, this time only the edges were like that. I have one pot left and next time I will only use potatoes to get that delicious crust as I remember it from when I was a child. Nevertheless, it was nice to have this again, I don't think I will order it again anytime soon, as I'm now quite used to making my own sauces for dinner, which often tastes much better than any pot of sauce!

Thanks for reading!

Your dish looks delicious. We have cooking sauces that I've used. However, I can't seem to find the older brands on the grocers' shelves any longer.

I've also found that sometimes too that the flavors and tastes of delicious foods in my childhood just can't be duplicated. I think it was Mom's love and patience added:

"I think we all have these things that were so good during our childhood and when eating it in our adult life, it's not that special anymore..."

I've attempted numerous times to duplicate dishes with no success. I truly believe the ingredients today are not what they were in our childhood. I really didn't pay attention to the process, only how fast I could gulp it down.

Thanks for sharing this childhood dish.

Take care.

I had this kind of potatoes dish a few times before but never with broccoli on top and I think they could work great together. If you still want to get that nice brownish crust on the potatoes, just add the broccoli on top when the dish is almost done, broccoli only needs a few minutes(at least for my taste). YumYum 🤤

Looks delicious, and like your daughter, I love broccoli gets crispy like that. But I see what you mean about your childhood favourite isn't as good as you thought. It's still exciting to have something you haven't had for a long time! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, I also like broccoli out of the oven, normally I fill a big oven plate with broccoli and some sweet potatoes for example, very nice! And we all know that things may change over the years so I didn't expect it to be as delicious as I thought it was back then. I also have to admit that I didn't eat many things when I was younger lol.

I need to stop reading your food posts late at night... but today I had some lovely cheese from Spain, and I can suggest you try this again with some Manchego or Cana de Oveja if you can get it!

Haha, sorry, time zones :)

I think (need to check it) that we had the Manchego on Sunday as a tapa, we loved it too. Forgot to ask which cheese it was but it looks the same so will buy it to try it.

The other one, no idea, but noted and if I see it I may buy it, thanks for the tips :) Cheese (as a Dutchy) in other countries is usually not that great so I have not bought anything unknown so far lol.

Getting out of my comfort zone though!

The Dutch have VERY HIGH standards abut cheese, and I understand ...

It's quite funny because we didn't have a cheese tapa more than once, and on Sunday we did have one which we both loved. It seems that it was the Manchego. As I forgot to ask the name, you seemed to have given me the answer, thanks!

It looks like some yummy comfort food. Yeah, I might have just roasted some broccoli to have as a side dish.

That was defo a better idea on the side as then the broccoli could have been nicely roasted as well as the top layer of the potato dish which I really missed. Most likely, this is how I will serve it next time haha.
