Exploring a new restaurant

We have noticed that the overall quality of some of the tapa restaurants is declining, probably it has to do with the end of the summer and tourist season as well as the harder times businesses have to keep their place open in general. It's a shame but it made us decide to eat more homemade food than having several weekly visits to restaurants (even if only for a few tapas). I don't like the fact that it usually results in just being out for a bit and not really that impressed by the food, even though we visited some of these places quite a few times now and were happy the first times when we went there. We had this one place that grabbed our attention a few times, yet we never ate there until I had the idea to check this out last week. I know we will be going for bites less from now on so I really hoped to give this one a try and their menu looked nice.

Nice ambiance

We already noticed that the ambiance in this restaurant is great, nice furniture outside as well as inside. We sat in these blue chairs outside first until I noticed I was already under attack by mosquitos within 10 minutes sitting there, we quickly moved inside to avoid this. I'm glad we did as inside there were better chairs and a very nice wall with green bottles as decoration. It was not too crowded so actually perfect for us.

The food

When I said they had lamb ribs on the menu, my boyfriend didn't have to check further because he was craving these for a while now. I decided to pick the grilled iberico meat, unfortunately, I could not identify which part of the meat it was exactly by looking at the menu, but my opinion is that usually grilled is good anyway, so I took my chances. Our daughter had a kid's menu with some chicken burger, fries and a fried egg. We also had a salad to share even though I forgot to take a picture of it, it was quite nice. It was a salad with goat cheese, walnuts and sundried tomatoes with some dressing I usually don't fancy but this time it was a good match.

Lovely meat!

Both our choices were excellent, both the lamb ribs as well as the iberico meat was super tender. The only thing I missed was the pepper sauce that I always love to add to any kind of meat when we go to a restaurant. The salad was nice and we were actually too full to even think about dessert. When we received the bill, it was a little more expensive than we usually aim for but at least it was a good dinner. We also received limoncello in a bottle with some shot glasses as well as a lemonade in the other glass for our daughter. I never tried limoncello before, I think it's quite nice. When my boyfriend said it's so nice, the waiter said take another one! I followed his example, which I shouldn't have because the walk uphill was now even twice as hard. Mind you, I seriously get tipsy after one drink, even if it's a shot.

*It was a nice evening, but probably also one of the lasts where we actually went out for a proper meal instead of a quick tapa only. It's time to say goodbye to summer and start saving more money than I'm currently doing. Thankfully, I still have loads of folders with images from restaurant visits in the past 3 months that I can share even if I won't leave the house! Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend!

I personally never made it myself but that's also a bit because in my opinion it's best from the grill. I would hate to waste lamb ribs by not prepping them well :)

had lamb at my sister's so they grilled it and basically what I fixed would be ground lamb meal and one time I roasted the giant piece of lamb in the oven and I think I'm the only one who ate it
I remember because it was so delicious and that's the only reason I remember decades ago

Yes, it's possible in the oven too.. It must have made an impact indeed if you remember it for this long :)

Not sure if you mean it's cut right or not lol (not an expert, haha) but the taste was great :)

I don't really fancy lamb too much myself but I tasted it as my boyfriend said it was so tender..

Good to see you settling well in Spain. We have some local tapas restaurants, but we didnt go yet. Its not really a child-friendly place so it makes it difficult and with limited time for just me and my wife to go out we didnt make it yet.

How are the prices for eating out? I found it quite pricey depending where you went.

The child-friendly place is important because we too have experienced quite a few times that there was literally nothing on the menu that she wanted to eat. She's a fussy eater, so that doesn't help either. Usually, they have some sort of chicken nuggets or something similar with potatoes or chicken curry but lately, it has become harder to get her to eat something, that's also a reason that I'm a bit done with eating elsewhere. It's shit if you go out for a relaxed evening and then have a complaining child for hours, especially not when you get the bill and realize we should have stayed home :)

The prices really depend, there are a few restaurants that have this concept where you scan the QR code and just order tapas or bigger dishes. Having a beer or other drink that usually gives you the right to a tapa isn't needed there, which is great as I usually drink water myself. They have quite some dishes for just 2 euro to 4-5 that are worth it so with a few each you'd have enough to eat and have a lower bill than when you order a big plate with any kind of meat or fish.

The thing is, lately the portions have come down in size, and these restaurants often only have part of the menu available where they had everything during summer. This is something you will find out when already there and it's not that great if you only really want to eat 3-4 things off the menu tops and 2 of them aren't available. We had plenty of evenings where we just paid 25 to 35 euros and had a great evening and enough food with the 3 of us. But we also had some surprises where we only liked a bigger plate and had to pay 3x as much. I try to avoid that though and aim for a few tapas mostly. I preferred having the option to do it more often over having 1 fancy dinner elsewhere because it was nice to be out at night during the hot summer months.

Where were you in Spain if I may ask? I think it differs a lot where you are, we are at the cost in the south, I think in the Barcelona area you will pay a lot more, but that's my guess.

Thats good to know and you are right. Also the smaller kids need some playground or activities to keep them busy.

We were on the coast by Alicante. Some of the beach restaurants were pricey I thought for a cheap lunch and sangria, but some of the longer termers knew the best places with good deals so there was a good balance to be had.

Yeah having a playground is ideal but we have not seen many restaurants here with a playground. Lately, it means we let her do some educational apps on the phone so we can eat in peace, lol.

I think the Alicante area is also quite expensive compared to here, but that's only from hear-say as I've never been up there in Spain. We will start exploring those areas once we have a car though, as I want to compare it myself, of course.

I admit that we have enjoyed a lot of tapas and restaurant visits since we arrived in June but it was a bit of catching up as we spend most of the months before due to prepping the emigration, sorting things, working our butts off etc. And it can be quite challenging having to work with 40 degrees all day, it really makes you want to leave the house at night and as everyone is eating late here, you simply start adjusting to that schedule slowly.

But playtime has come to an end with the kid attending school probably from Tuesday, getting back into full work mode during school hours, and also meal prepping again. Time to start saving these euros instead of spending them too often, lol.
