Snacks at a Belgian restaurant
Food we know from our childhood
Everyone from Holland (and Belgium) probably knows frikandellen & bitterballen. We used to pull these out of vending machines in the wall at snack bars when we were younger. I already mentioned before that we can actually order these snacks here but we have to live closer to be able to receive them with cooled transport. Meaning, so far, we have not been able to order them at home. No need to either as we can just walk to the harbor and have a nice evening at a Belgian restaurant that serves these snacks. Personally, I don't mind not having to fry them in our home, I dislike the smell afterwards, so going there is a win-win. We also get served some cheese and peanuts sometimes, which was lovely as we didn't know this cheese yet.
Bitterballen vs kroketten
Our daughter tried kroketten in Budapest when our Dutch friend made them for us, and she liked these. The filling of the bitterballen is actually quite similar (if not completely similar) and therefore we told her to try it as we knew she would love them. Last time she finally did, and now it means we have to share the portion with the 3 of us instead of 2 people. It's fine though, we aren't going there often anyway, so ordering another portion is not a big deal. They are of course more expensive compared to ordering them to fry at home and even more than in Holland, but it's a good place to sit and enjoy the fresh air a bit, so we take the price for granted.
Belgian beer
Although my boyfriend usually drinks a dark "Kasteelbier" when we're there, he took the advice of the Belgian owner and tried a "St. Bernardus Abt 12" beer this time. He said it's not bad, but he prefers the other one after all. At least this way it's a treat to drink this beer as normally he would not drink dark beers because he always goes back to "Kasteelbier".
Frikandel
Although I personally already had enough frikandel after eating it twice here, our daughter still likes to eat one when we visit. To me it was more the longing for these type of snacks because we could not order or buy them, while for her this is all still quite new and something many kids from Holland eat when they have a birthday party. So I will just let her order it whenever we are there as we used to do the same when we were young!
I think we may go here again this weekend, just to enjoy the environment and some fresh air, we need it more than ever now without air conditioners at home. We may just sit there all evening and have a few snacks. The regular menu is not really worth ordering so far but the ambiance definitely is!
Thanks for reading and have a good weekend ahead!
