Day 7 - Homemade Playdough

30 pictures - 30 stories divider set - Introduction.png

I got inspired by the "30 day not-so ordinary ordinary items challenge" but as I love giving things a personal twist, I decided to change the format a bit for myself so it suits me better. I've adjusted it to the 30 pictures - 30 stories challenge. But some days you will see that I also use not-so ordinary ordinary objects.

Feel free to join the challenge at any time if you like.

Publish one picture a day during 30 days and write a story about that picture. This can be anything, any object in the home, a person, scenery or a pet. I'm going to share a diversity of pictures and challenge myself to step outside of the box.

Today's picture was not planned to be completely honest, but when I took the picture I decided to add it to the mix of 30 stories content. I mentioned it before that I never buy any Playdough from the store anymore but make my own instead. Not only is it a lot cheaper, but you can also create your own colors as well as make a huge pile at once rather than having just a few tiny packs of playdough. The ingredients are also safe if you make it yourself and therefore suitable for young children in case you still have a child that puts everything in his or her mouth!

I promised to make my daughter this playdough somewhere in September and then we both forgot about it as she never brought it up again. Although I had all the ingredients at home, I made sure to buy a big bag of salt as well as food colorings the day after her request, I never got around to make it because it was never asked again, lol. I admit that I didn't mind it too much because even though it's always ready quite fast, I always look up to the moment of having to make it again. This time was no different.

As I just received the stand mixer for Christmas, my boyfriend said why bother kneading it yourself, let the mixer do it! Yes, great idea babe, and so I unpacked the mixer to try it for the first time. I decided that it was probably smart to first use it for something simple as a first attempt to get to know the thing better so I made a quick chocolate mousse first before I went ahead and did my playdough attempt with the stand mixer.

I will save your the horrible pictures but let me emphasize, this was not a good idea! It was horribly sticky and the mixer should have been my hands instead. The worst thing is that I didn't manage to improve it with flour as I normally easily can when kneading it by hand, I guess it's easier to feel how much you need when you have it in your hands than in a bowl from the mixer.

Eventually the "playdough" turned out well enough to play with after at least an hour of frustration on my hand, I cursed the damn thing many times but the kid was happy so at least it was worth it. We kept it in the fridge only to find out it was more of a pudding structure later and needed even more flour to the mix. When unpacking it again on Sunday, I told my daughter she could play with it one last time then we can try to harden it out (will probably fail lol) but if it works she can paint it. If not, we throw it in the bin this time.

When I tried to get it out of the bag, I was appalled by how it felt, and I decided to just let it fall out from the bag into the pile of flour on the table (gosh, a glass table is really convenient for these sticky moments!). When it fell on the table into the flour, I felt I needed to take a picture of this as it looked artistic to me. And here we are, at the end of my post about homemade playdough (gone wrong this time). Note to self: next time, knead by hand, end of note.

Did you ever make playdough yourself and went back to regular playdough because of the failed attempts? No? Neither did I, just keep trying, next time it will look fabulous again!

Hahah, but it was worth!

Try next time to let the mixer do its job and then use your hands at the very end (pls do not dump the mixer :D).

I have no kids, so there is no need for play dough, but this can be great gift idea of you wanna bitter up some parents life. :)))

What are the ingredients?

I have done that obviously, I used the exact same ingredients as I always do as I have the recipe printed. Below is the recipe I once used from the net source

Ingredients

1 cups of flour
1 Tablespoon of salt
1/2 Tablespoon of Oil
1/4 cup of warm water
Food Coloring (optional)

Instructions

Using a bowl add the flour, salt, and oil. I used canola oil but any oil works.
Add in the food coloring and the warm water.
Mix with a spoon until you can no longer blend it.
Once the water cools down a bit, you can start kneading the dough with your hands.
When you have a good consistency, add some flour onto your cutting board and knead some more.
If the dough sticks to your fingers it needs more flour. Add a little bit at a time to not dry the dough. If you dry it by mistake, just add a little bit of water.

And of course I will not throw out the mixer lol, I bet it's useful for many things, just this one wasn't...

Welcome..

There are recipes out there with cream of tartar as well but I had to skip those at the time as that was not available anywhere. When I found this simplified version, which worked fine, I never tried it including cream of tartar, but if you want to, you can just google DIY playdough cream of tartar or something and see what you prefer.

I like to keep it simple when possible, and these ingredients are usually available so can make it anytime really.

So convenient for small children too, and a lot lot lot cheaper :)

Ummmm, not sure about adding anything into it except maybe for some texture and color, like you did. Just saw there is an option for tartar (lemon juice/vinegar), however as long as salt is there no worries about preservation.

Definitely I'll look around for it, lots of small kids around me and I'll never say no to saving a few bucks.

Looking forward to see some lill hands creation (:

Yeah I didn't even know the cream of tartar thing until I found it in that recipe. I don't think I ever used it in my life. It was hard to get some ingredients in Hungary at the time so I was happy to find this one, just a few ingredients and not much to remember as it's so simple.

Adding the coloring was welcomed nicely here, I usually make pink blue and yellow and then she mixes them up.

I will probably make another batch this weekend so she can make some things to paint as well, this batch was not working out, although she played with it for quite some hours so it's not a big deal.

I bet you never go back to the regular playdough after this :) haha You can truly get this one in the same texture, mine was not as it should be but previous ones were.. I saw you have a lot of baking posts, no doubt you'll get it right!

I thought it's a tartar sauce 😂😂😂😂

I have bunch of those dr. Oetker sugary decorative perls and other shapes, finally will be useful!

Encourage is much appreciated, thanks for believing in me, actually I've made 'salty dough' last year in order to make Xmas tree ornaments, expect there is no oil in recipe but my hands fell 📴 from kneading.

Now I'm thinking about to add 'tartar' and try to bake some pots and kitchen bowls instead of clay. 🤔

LOL well I never used it in my life and with a few emigrations behind me, it's not something that I can find in my cupboards from long time ago either lol.

I think ideally to bake the clay you need to change it a bit but I'm not 100% sure I think I also read how people made Christmas ornaments using this clay.

My daughter wants some cupcakes for her play kitchen so we'll try it soon I guess..

Let me know if that worked out though, with the pots and bowls :)

oh, so you were inspired by that challenge... I participated and completed the 30 days. I think it's great what you're doing, it's really inspiring. Let yourself go and write whatever crazy thing you come up with. But most of all, have fun.
