Brazilian Music: Vange Leonel

I just got to know this community, and I already felt confident enough in the proposal to risk a regional music post! Since I started on the blockchain networks I occasionally share with the world some musicians from my country that I think deserve attention. Not because I am Brazilian I have to necessarily honor the bands and composers from here, but it happens that Brazil has an undeniable power to give birth to great artists, the music world is full of rich pieces, great authors of unquestionably powerful compositions and many bands that are bigger than the space they actually had in their homeland. I could name countless, but my focus here is to go exactly to the unlikely and unobvious.

Today I will talk about a songwriter/singer who strongly marked an early decade and has departed this life. Her name is Vange Leonel. To be more exact, her name was Maria Evangelina Leonel Gandolfo, but she adopted the name Vange Leonel from the moment she entered the music world. It can be said that her debut was through the band Nau, in their eponymous album in 1987, a moment when the post-punk had space and power in Brazil, many amazing bands gained strength in this movement that unfortunately was a kind of fire-fight, and in a short time, another kind of music was taking the radios and the sound spaces of the Brazilians. But in this only album of the band we can already see the incredible lyrical potential of the singer Vange Leonel. Her distinctive vocals from so many "more common in the music market" female voices give an absurd reinforcement to the compositions, often using an aggressive and authentic balance between bass and treble, messing with the cliché sound pattern that rules Western music when thought in a more homogeneous way. Where do these influences come from? I don't know, I haven't found anything specific about it, but I felt something from blues, soul, or even alternative music like Q Lazzarus or Dead Can Dance. As an example of this still post-punk (and something else) phase of their debut band, I leave here a song where all this lyricism can be well tasted:

After the end of the band, Vange went on to a solo project that happened to bring out a great album for Brazilian pop music (yet not at all predictable). Prompted by a TV soap opera that put one of her tracks on the soundtrack, the singer finally managed to reach a space in the media and get noticed, but her album contained other great songs besides the so famous "Noite Preta", a song that exploded due to the soap opera. As an example of this I leave here the song that led me to the singer, and which to this day is the song of most strength and depth for me. It is called "Esse Mundo" (This World), and is based on the struggle for space and equality for homosexuals (more specifically in the lesbian struggle, which she has always been very militant). And it is even worth leaving the lyrics here for those who want to better grasp the message. The sound of this particular track gives me very intense sensations of a dive in a kind of vaporous and narcotic dream, which despite putting you in a state of peace and nostalgia of something not experienced, it transmutes into a lump in the throat by the limpid and courageous hope of expectation for a better world through its militant lyrics. The chorus, totally breaking the expectations of something obvious, brings the same contrasting and complex nuance that was seen in tracks from his previous band's past, where he ventures into extremely unusual timbres that send a shiver down your spine without any effort. It would be too cheap to say that there was something Dream Pop there that referred to the vocal work of Cocteau Twins for example and the sound environment itself seemed to anticipate what would become VaporWave perhaps, in short, a song out of its time, no doubt, and that if heard today, continues to give the feeling of out of time, almost like a kind of Uncany Valley of music, because it seems that it does not participate in the past nor in the present, and given its "semi lo-fi" quality, it is probably not of the future either.

Welcome, welcome here, the train is leaving
Break out your tents we've got a lot to discover
There's not a place in the world we can't go
Welcome, welcome here, the train is leaving
Grab your masks we're going that way
Show how ordinary we are and how much fun we can have
Ah... ah ah ah ah ah ah
Let's not be afraid just because we can paint our faces
This world will see us play
This world will see us smile
This world will see us sing
This world will hear us say
Welcome, welcome here yeah yeah yeah yeah
Forget your sorrows all that won't do
It doesn't matter if we're few
And we don't need to lie no
This world will see us play
This world will see us smile
This world will see us sing
This world will hear us say
This world is going to see us play
This world is going to see us smile
This world is going to see us sing
This world, this world
Ah... ah ah ah ah ah ah

Everything has its time, and after two albums, Vange Leonel turned away from music. She focused on theater, then literature, and at a certain point she lost the fight against cancer, at the age of 51. I would have liked to imagine that she could have done much more musically, but she preferred other paths, I never got to read anything by her (and I confess that I found out today, researching for this text, that she wrote), but I am sure she must have done her best in her written content as well, which was mainly based on the eternal fight for freedom of space and expression for LGBTQIA+. Anyway, even though her musical career was relatively brief, she marked Brazil with her potential and exclusivity unseen in the scene until then, the younger generation that grew up in another musical reality is farther than ever from this kind of song and the complexity of the music of past decades, but sooner or later this kind of thing is rescued and reaches a new audience, it always has been and always will be. Thank you Vange, for everything.

Bem vindos, bem vindos aqui yeah yeah yeah yeah
