The Wolf House - 2018 // La Casa Lobo - 2018

From time to time I find some works of cinema that leave me awestruck, and last week I took a stroll through the great Taste of Cinema that pointed me to some little known works that were worth watching. I ended up discovering some great films, but today I want to talk here not about a great film, but about a work of art. La Casa Lobo.

I know nothing about Chilean cinema, but if it has 5% of what I saw in La Casa Lobo, it will already be on my attention list, definitely. Of course, I can't expect to find another film with such boldness and complexity, and I even risk assuming that there is nothing else like this film. It is hard to say what I found so enchanting about it, but it is definitely not the script. Not that the story is bad or poorly developed, but it's just that I was too busy being overwhelmed by such a masterpiece of direction, construction, photography, construction and art in general to the point that the story wasn't even that important. So much so that I won't go into it here, just summarize it in a bland way so that the reader has a basic notion of what it's about: -Maria, a young woman who has fled her sectarian and traditionalist German village in the rural countryside of Chile takes refuge in a house in the middle of the forest, inside the house she finds two pigs. Maria's affectionate relationship with the pigs makes them become more and more human, until they form a kind of family. From then on the house begins to react negatively to this "family" and little by little tries to sabotage them. The film even flirts with a deconstruction of reality, hinting that such a film was produced by the leader of the sect, in the form of a fairy tale to aid in the indoctrination of his colony.

But now let's get to the real point. I don't even know how to explain this, but the film works with various types of art interspersed to build one of the most creative and frightening animations of all time. Relying mainly on stop-motion, the authors use the house itself as the main character (apparently) since in many moments the acting beings are made in paint, but not a painting on paper photographed frame by frame, but continuous paintings on the walls of the real house, transcending the limits of the floor or corners, sometimes with parts of the house moving outside the character, and in its great majority the film presents puppets made of paper and masking tape, oscillating between a realism that borders on the "uncany-valley" and the purposeful surrealism of size distortion. The film is referred to as "experimental horror animation", but there isn't necessarily horror in it, it has more to do with the agony the film causes, the incredibly well-produced music in a dreamlike pattern, the distressed and dark narrations, the fragmented oscillation of takes causing convoluted movements in the characters, and amazing takes of paint covering paint, changing the scenery constantly, sometimes even in a semi-wall breaking showing the chaotic scenery caused by the very work of producing such a work of art. I don't think I will be able to say more than this. So I will close my text with some basic technical data and hope that this will be enough to convince you to experience this film!

The film was loosely based on Colonia Dignidad, is directed by Cristobal León and Joaquín Cociña, won some good awards and much critical acclaim, considered one of the most amazing and incredible works of animation. The fact that it was not even considered for an Oscar in the year of its release can already confirm, without further details, how ridiculous the academy awards are and that they have nothing to do with real cinema. The film is from 2018 and it was only THIS WEEK that I discovered its existence. The fact that it was done take by take in photography, makes the whole work like a work of art of preserved and destroyed pieces, given that the set was constantly reassembled and painted in the following takes. It is like producing an amazing work, photographing it, and then destroying it. I could leave the full movie here (which is on youtube), but honestly, I'd rather just give you a taste of it through the trailer, and if you are interested, go for it! Thanks for reading!
