Marina Grande Club

This weekend I went to the beach!

Friday afternoon and the ringing of the phone brought me out of my thoughts. On the other end my brother asked me: What are your plans for this weekend: we are going to the beach, are you up for it?

Saturday morning, my brother picked me up at 07:30 a.m., in his Renault Twingo. If you know it, you already know that it is a very small vehicle, and yet we got into the vehicle 6 people: my brother, my sister-in-law, my two nephews, my sister and of course: me!

Our destination is the "Club Marina Grande", located on Playa Verde Avenue, Playa Grande Urbanization, Catia La Mar, La Guaira State, Venezuela, about 30 minutes by car from my residence.

56a16e24-cff4-4c77-a600-b0939da388d3.jpg

It has a large private parking lot, surrounded by many beach grape trees. Although these trees offer little or no shade to vehicles, it looks very nice and ecological.

The construction is somewhat simple and rudimentary. Its outer perimeter is surrounded by block walls. The roof of the ticket booth and the entrance are built with palms, which gives warmth to the place. That connection with nature that we need so much. There is also a kind of wooden gazebo, whose roof has disappeared by the action of the wind.

Once we cross the entrance we find ourselves in front of the small beach, which has been built on its sides breakwaters to prevent the waves from entering with such force, but I think it does not achieve its function. This weekend the waves were very high.

The club has cement walkways along its entire length, with abundant beach grape trees and palm-roofed huts for those who do not want contact with the sand.

While in the beach area, they have rudimentary awnings, very deteriorated by the way, with plastic chairs, for those of us who like to fill our ears with sand.

The interesting thing about this club is that it is designed to provide comfort to its visitors, either those who only want to have contact with the sea or for those who want to organize parties: bathrooms, barbecue area, tennis court, showers, playground, etc..

49cb406f-3c6f-4dc1-8591-b35283e9434e.jpg

Of course, being a club located in front of the sea, all its constructions are basic, very rudimentary, built in concrete, block, wood, palms, plastic, that is to say, any constructive element except metal. You know, it rusts quickly.

It has three points of external showers, for those who want to quickly remove the sand from their bodies; but additionally it has at least 3 points of bathrooms with showers, W.C. and an internal space where to change clothes.

For the amusement of the little ones there is a playground, which is always alone. I think that idea was crazy, I do not want to imagine a child who prefers a swing to the adventure of being dragged by the sea wave.

At its eastern end there is a hut restaurant with small plastic tables. The times I have been there, it is always empty. Visitors prefer to have their drinks and food delivered to where they are located.

faf335c6-d68f-4cb9-a332-882168aa3461.jpg

Just behind the restaurant there is a beach tennis court, a small churuata for those who prefer to grill. The times I have been there, these areas are always deserted. I think the only thing visitors want is beach, sun, sand and beer.

7b1d392a-ba0b-4b3d-8992-442eb17bfba8.jpg

Thinking of everything, they also have located some bars for athletes or those who want to exercise ... for me that athletes are raising beers. Thinking of those who like to exercise their jaws, there are several kiosks where they sell food to take away: hot dogs, empanadas, tostones, ice cream, etc.

The construction fulfills its function: to provide comfort and service to visitors who want to spend a different day in front of the sea, either resting, eating or playing. The place covers the basics that are needed. There is harmony between the building and the sea.

If you made it this far, thank you very much for reading me.

Oh wow! Nothing simply beats a piece of architecture situated in front of a beautiful beach, right @tibaire? Aside from the resort vibes, you get to immerse yourself in the best of 2 worlds: nature and the built environment. You are absolutely correct when you said that metal elements must be avoided in sea coastlines where that facility's construction has the tendency to develop rust, corroding the materials, and eventually compromising the entire infrastructure. 😀

I think that idea was crazy, I do not want to imagine a child who prefers a swing to the adventure of being dragged by the sea wave.

Based on your actual experience, should playgrounds for children and other recreational areas be totally banned in beach resorts in favor of what Mother Nature can offer? Or are there other better design options for this? Would love to hear your thoughts! 😊

You are absolutely right, an architectural work that merges with nature is the best. Rustic, rudimentary but with all the comforts. With biodegradable construction elements, wood, palm, it can be concrete, although in some areas of the country they build with adobe walls (my grandfather built his house with that material which is nothing more than earth trodden with vegetable remains).

I would not think so much about banning children's playgrounds. Instead I would think about taking advantage of the sea and build a space inside the sea or next to the sea where children can play in the park and at the same time enjoy the goodness of small waves. A controlled wave space.
