Vestiges of the past: Central Park

Good vibes hivers of the world.

A few days ago I had to renew my identification document. For reasons of time and movement, I prefer the offices of the Administrative Service of Identification, Migration and Foreigners - SAIME, which are in my area of residence and it turns out that the closest is the one located in the Parque Central Urban Complex, Bolivar Avenue very close to Bellas Artes. It is only a 15 minute walk away.

The Complejo Urbanístico Parque Central is an icon in Caracas, Venezuela. It has the two tallest towers in the country, with 59 floors. Its facade is made of concrete and glass. Its interior has escalators and wide corridors. It is an imposing structure and its floors are occupied by government offices. By the way, the SAIME office is located in the East Tower, on the first floor. I did not take pictures of the place, it was totally dark. In itself it is a bit scary to be there.

Since I started with the Towers, I tell you that the East Tower suffered a fire about 18 years ago. I still remember that from afar my eyes were fixed on the column of smoke coming from the upper floors. I eventually learned that the fire started on the 39th floor and affected a large part of the structure of this building. I also remember it vividly because my boss had a light aircraft and the floors that were affected by the fire were occupied by the National Institute of Civil Aeronautics. Needless to say that all the aircraft files were lost and my boss had to carry all the documentation to register his plane again.

Now, the Complex is not only made up of the two towers, East and West, but also has large open spaces with restaurants, stores, meeting rooms, museums, etc. There are still large gardens and small squares among the buildings. It is a place that in its glory days was simply imposing. It was definitely designed so that the people who visited it did not have to leave it.

34a0a364-b70a-4eeb-bd40-4d0bec4a4adf.jpg

It also has several residential buildings. They are imposing with a concrete structure and large windows. Its design with a certain pyramidal shape at its base is unique or at least I have not seen another building like it in this city. Once I had the opportunity to visit one of the apartments. Each building has its main entrance through the large corridors of the commercial common area. They have glass doors and fairly modern elevators. When you get to each floor, there is a door (security measure) and then a long dark hallway. The apartment I visited was a studio type, one bedroom. Extremely small for my taste and I live in a studio apartment.

The untroweled concrete reigns in this building, it is rustic, solid and spacious. The floor is ceramic and smoothed concrete, which in some areas already show damage from the passage of time and lack of maintenance. The ceiling in the common areas has no ceiling, leaving the pipes and electrical wiring exposed. I am not sure if this was the architect's intention or if over time abandonment has taken its toll.

It has several levels of parking. I have visited at least one. It has a concrete floor, in poor condition. For safety reasons I did not dare to go down to this area. I definitely do not feel safe in that place without a companion.

In any case, despite the visible abandonment and apathy of those in charge of maintaining this space, it is evident the beauty it hides. Sometimes, it is necessary to look with different eyes to see beauty where apparently there is none ... or paraphrasing a dear friend who told me, at that time when I complained more than now; "look at the sky Tibaire, look at the sky".

Although it may not seem so, this visit was an adventure that allowed me to look with different eyes, a structure that, although glorious, leaves much to be desired.

AHORA EN ESPAÑOL

Buena vibra hivers del mundo.

f41b6ccd-a86e-4e83-9b3d-2e3978679ad7.jpg

A tan solo 15 minutos caminando.

02dc03a8-a754-4931-8f2b-a2482413bec5.jpg

6161b419-8fec-455e-9cc8-9786533702da.jpg

@devania You were very fortunate to have known Parque Central at its best. Today when I walk through its areas I see beauty even in the chaos and deterioration in which it is immersed. I hope one day it will be restored and its beauty will be seen again.

The towers of central park are an icon of Venezuelan architecture, I visited this place years ago and stayed a while watching the towers, the glass windows give an effect of movement, that complex of buildings emerge imposing in the center of the city, the night view was spectacular, it is a shame that a building of great splendor and architectural relevance is abandoned and deteriorated, hopefully soon to be reactivated and regain its splendor.

Blessings!

Greetings @tibaire. Incredible! You truly deserve a pat on the back for your courageous exploration of Central Park. I completely understand that it's not easy to investigate architectural landmarks like that especially when you're alone due to the building's deteriorating conditions as some unexpected accidents might happen. So it''s always better to be safe than sorry. 👍😊

During your actual observations, what specific aspects of the landmark require immediate attention and critical renovations? Aside from that tragic fire years ago, did those skyscrapers already survive a previous earthquake?

Hello dear @storiesoferne. here my answer. I think they should start by fixing the basements, where the parking lot is located. It is extremely deteriorated. The concrete floor is raised, deteriorated, dust abounds, there is little or no electricity and there is a lack of ventilation. The air is very stuffy.

Some time ago I entered a restaurant and noticed that the sewage drainage pipes are very deteriorated. Some pipes are leaking and some commercial corridors have leaks in their walls. Of course the smell is another factor here.

The electrical wires tangled in the ceilings of the common area was another aspect I noticed. I really believe that a fire could break out at any time.

The good thing is that there have been no earthquakes in Caracas for a long time, I think the last one was in the 60s. If an earthquake happens in this city, I think we are going to have a very bad time.

Incredible observations dear @tibaire. The building's property managers must invest in preventive maintenance and related measures to improve the performance, stability, and aesthetics of these spaces. Thank goodness those towers didn't experience earthquakes. God forbid, no one wants these natural disasters to happen in populous cities like Caracas. Have a joyful, safe, and productive one! Happy weekend! ☺️

The building looks very old, but I always like this impression, because the building looks so sturdy.

Hello @aswita , you are absolutely right it is very robust. It was very well built. Its foundations are solid and even when it has little or no maintenance, you can appreciate its firmness in the concrete. It is not deteriorated. The deterioration is in the other components of the building: Electricity, drainage pipes, basements, etc.

These two towering buildings give a majestic look to the city. The lower floors are at a great distance, so the lights must be on constantly. I think these two towers definitely look more attractive at night.
