[ENG/ESP] Investigation in the Paredones Cave: A Geological and Paleontological Treasure

A Necessary Introduction

The trip to Paredones Cave was a fascinating journey, not only because of its imposing subterranean geography, but also because it is an invaluable testament to Cuba's natural history. Located in the municipality of Caimito, Artemisa province, this cave is considered one of the most important Quaternary paleontological sites in the Cuban archipelago.

It was a trip during which researchers from the Geological Survey of Cuba discovered some of the essential characteristics of Paredones Cave, one of the objectives of our research and development projects.

Below, I've listed the main physical, geographical, and geological characteristics that we discovered during our trip to this wonder of western Cuba.

Geographic Location

Paredones Cave is It is located specifically in the Southern Karst Plain, formerly part of Havana, and currently situated in the new province of Artemisa. Its main entrance is at the bottom of a sinkhole located about 50 meters above sea level, just 90 meters from the road that connects Ceiba del Agua with Alquízar, in the southern part of the Antonio Maceo neighborhood. This relative proximity to the southern coast places it in a transitional region between the highlands and the plains south of Havana.

Some physical and geographical characteristics and geological features we were able to identify

The main geological feature of the site is its phreatic origin, meaning it was formed by the chemical dissolution of rocks due to the upwelling of groundwater rich in carbonic acid. Experts classify it as an Astón-type cave, characterized by a fairly straight succession of chambers.

The cave is formed in rocks of the The Güines Formation, from the Miocene era (between 5 and 23 million years old), consists of biodetrital limestones and dolomites, ranging in color from white to gray, exhibiting a high degree of fracturing and secondary dolomitization. With an explored length of approximately 600 meters, the cave culminates in a phreatic lake where even species of blind fish adapted to total darkness have been reported.

One of the most unique features of the site is the "Hall of the Idols," illuminated by a natural skylight over 28 meters high, through which the roots of a powerful jagüey tree grow.

Vegetation and Soils

The vegetation outside the cave is lush, typical of the evergreen tropical forest, with a high density of trees such as the aforementioned jagüey, whose roots reach for water inside the cave.

As for the soils, the most distinctive feature in the cave's internal strata is the presence of red earth (laterite). This type of soil, characteristic of the red plains of western Cuba, is the result of the decalcification of limestone, leaving iron and aluminum oxides as residue. This clay sediment has been key to the preservation of fossils.

Other points of interest

The true treasure of the Cave Paredones Cave is filled with fossils. During the Pleistocene, the doline acted as a natural trap (sinkhole) where the remains of animals carried by rainwater accumulated, constituting an invaluable geological heritage.

A final comment

Visiting Paredones Cave is much more than a caving tour; it's a journey to prehistoric Cuba. Its karst geology, its red fossil-rich soils, and its impressive natural history solidify its status as a priority Site of Geological Interest that deserves to be preserved as a National Monument.

Seeing that place through your photographs left me completely surprised and amazed at the same time; it’s such an important geological treasure, and at the same time astonishing for its beauty and what it represents, so many animals from other eras swept into this place, making it a source of information and study. The technical data, which you’re well aware of given your profession, is spectacular, even though I don’t understand the technical details.

I focus on the natural beauty, on the importance of these caves, and seeing that vegetation, those trees reaching into them in search of water, is incredible. You’re so lucky to be able to be there and admire and study all of that. Thanks for sharing it!! Big hugs!🤗

It is always an honor to receive your feedback and valuable help. As I explained to my dear friend @jlufer, being the director of Knowledge Management of the Geological Survey of Cuba has given me the luck of visiting most of the natural treasures of the country and, more than work, it is joy, joy and a lot of knowledge. I try to avoid the technical elements in the main so that you can understand why the scientific names of animals and plants, the names of geological formations and of many features signed in different periods of geological time are really quite complicated. That is why I focus more on showing our natural riches. Thank you for the help and support for our work. Happy day. Cheers and greetings.
