This film tells the story of a family that has just moved from Chicago to an old house quite far away from everything, hoping to start over and leave all the bad things behind. Kristen Stewart plays the role of Jessica, a teenager with a stormy past and full of rebellion, who was totally against the decision to move to a town where she knew no one and worst of all, having to leave all her life in the city and her old friends. They arrive at a house that looks practically abandoned, it was uninhabited for 5 or 6 years. Roy (Dylan Mcdermott) along with his wife Denise (Penelope Ann Miller) put all their capital into buying the house, and Roy was determined to make it work. As usual nothing goes as planned, Roy doesn't know anything about planting, but unexpectedly a guy comes to his rescue. He offers to help him on the condition that he has a roof over his head and food.

Este filme cuenta la historia de una familia que se acaba de mudar de Chicago a una casa antigua bastante apartada de todo, esperando así empezar de nuevo y dejar todo lo malo atrás. Kristen Stewart interpreta el papel de Jessica una adolescente con un pasado tormentoso y lleno de rebeldía, que estaba totalmente en contra de la decisión de mudarse a un pueblo donde no conocía a nadie y lo peor de todo, tener que dejar toda su vida en la ciudad y a sus viejos amigos. Llegan a una casa que parece prácticamente abandonada, estuvo deshabitada por 5 o 6 años. Roy (Dylan Mcdermott) junto con su esposa Denise (Penelope Ann Miller) pusieron todo su capital para comprar la casa, y Roy estaba determinado a hacer que funcionara. Como de costumbre nada sale como se planea, Roy no sabe nada de plantación, pero inesperadamente llega un sujeto en su rescate. Ofrece ayudarle con la condición de tener un techo y comida.

Everything starts to turn dark when inexplicable things start to happen in the house, Jessica and her little brother Ben (Evan and Theodore Turner) are the only ones who witness the creepy events. She tries to talk to her parents but they don't listen to her, they think she is inventing everything in order to go back to Chicago and get her old life back. Unfortunately, she can't turn to her little brother either, because of a car accident that she caused and as a consequence of it, the little boy lost his speech. Will she be able to make her parents see reason or will they succumb to the terror that is rooted in those lands?

Todo empieza a tornarse oscuro cuando en la casa empiezan a suceder cosas inexplicables, Jessica y su hermano pequeño Ben (Evan and Theodore Turner) son los únicos que presencian los espeluznantes acontecimientos. Ella intenta hablar con sus padres pero ellos no la escuchan, creen que está inventando todo con el fin de volver a Chicago y recuperar su antigua vida. Para su desgracia tampoco puede recurrir a su pequeño hermano, ya que debido a un accidente automovilístico que ella provocó y como consecuencia del mismo el pequeño perdió el habla. ¿Será capaz de hacer entrar en razón a sus padres o por el contrario sucumbirán ante el terror que está arraigado en esas tierras?

This is an old movie but the story is really very good, it's different for many reasons, it has very good effects despite not having the current technology. The acting in general is very good, especially Kristen's, her expressions when she is terrified together with her peculiar body language make her the right person to play the role of the teenager Jessica. The truth is that who surprised me was the little actor of this story, his interpretation was excellent, but something peculiar I discovered after watching the movie, it was that it isn't only a child who acts, there are two, two little twin brothers who are interspersed depending on the scene, I thought this was great.

Esta es una película algo antigua pero la historia es realmente muy buena, es diferente por muchos motivos, tiene unos efectos muy buenos a pesar de no contar con la tecnología actual. La actuación en general es muy buena, en especial la de Kristen, sus expresiones al estar aterrada junto con su lenguaje corporal bastante peculiar la hacen la persona indicada para interpretar el papel de la adolescente Jessica. La verdad es que quien me sorprendió fue el pequeño actor de esta historia, su interpretación fue excelente, pero algo peculiar descubrí después de ver la película y fue que no solo es un niño el que actúa, son dos, dos pequeños hermanos gemelos a quienes intercalan dependiendo de la escena, esto me pareció grandioso.

The character I absolutely hated was Denise, I honestly don't know if it was the actress's fault or if she played her role so well that I really found her detestable. I hated all her scenes, her expressions and especially her dialogues. She was a very toxic character that her presence in the story only aggravates the whole situation and doesn't really contribute with anything. Now that I think about it I think it's both, the character and the actress that I don't like at all, and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks this way, if you have seen the movie (or watch it after reading this review) I'm sure you will agree with me, as there is nothing good to point out about her.

Al personaje que odié por completo fue a Denise, honestamente no sé si fue culpa de la actriz o si más bien hizo tan bien su papel que de verdad me pareció detestable. Todas sus escenas, sus expresiones y en especial sus diálogos los odié, ella fue un personaje bastante tóxico que su presencia en la historia solo agrava toda la situación y no aporta nada bueno la verdad. Ahora que lo pienso creo que es tanto el personaje como la actriz que no me gustan en lo absoluto y no creo ser el único que piensa así, si has visto la película (o la ves después de leer esta reseña) estoy seguro que estarás de acuerdo conmigo, pues no hay nada bueno que puntualizar de ella.

I've never commented on this but if there's one thing I love is how Asians approach the whole horror thing, they have some pretty crazy and really creepy ideas. Something peculiar that they use are the characters that already died walking in a super strange way as if they had all their bones broken, so in addition to their irregular gait they make a very disturbing sound at the same time. They also make a lot of use of makeup to give that pale and ghostly look to the dead, but to make the most of that look they use contact lenses and black hair to enhance everything. I've always loved the unique point of view they give to horror and you can see that here because the directors the Pang Brothers are in fact Asian.

Nunca he comentado esto pero si hay algo que amo es como los asiáticos abordan todo el tema del terror, tienen unas ideas bastante locas y realmente escalofriantes. Algo peculiar que ellos usan son a los personajes que ya murieron caminando de una forma súper extraña como si tuvieran todos sus huesos rotos, así que además de su andar irregular hacen un sonido bastante inquietante a la vez. También hacen mucho uso del maquillaje para darle ese look pálido y fantasmal a los muertos, pero para sacar todo el provecho a esa apariencia usan lentes de contacto y el cabello negro para realzar todo. Siempre me ha encantado todo ese punto de vista único que le dan al terror y se puede ver esto presente acá porque efectivamente los directores los hermanos Pang son de hecho asiáticos.

Now let's talk about the twists and turns of this movie that although I find it difficult I won't give you any spoilers, because that would take away the surprise factor. Although this film is very influenced by the classic sounds that accompany this genre, it also has a somewhat fresh story, which makes something very clear and that is the popular saying that "nothing is what it seems" and in this film is reflected perfectly with one of the characters and I could even say that it also applies to ghosts in some ways.

Ahora hablemos de los giros de esta película que aunque me resulte difícil no les pienso adelantar nada, porque así les quitaría el factor sorpresa. Aunque esta película está muy influenciada por los clásicos sonidos que acompañan a este género, también cuenta con una historia algo fresca, que deja bien en claro algo y es ese popular dicho que dice “nada es lo que parece” y en esta película queda reflejado perfectamente con uno de los personajes y hasta podría decir que también aplica a los fantasmas en cierta forma.

The things I find most peculiar about this film are two in particular. First the amount of scenes that the little boy of the family has, all of them excellent, because as everyone knows, there is something about children in horror movies, that due to their innocence they bring an extra concern and even desperation in their scenes, thus causing with their tiny presence and ignorance to the danger that the tension increases, raising the fear to the maximum. I have always loved the fusion between innocence and terror, I think it gives good results in this genre.

Las cosas que encontré más peculiares es esta película son dos en especial. Primero la cantidad de escenas que tiene el pequeño de la familia, todas excelentes cabe destacar, porque como todos saben, hay algo en los niños que aparecen en películas de terror, que debido a su inocencia aportan un extra de preocupación y hasta desesperación en sus escenas, provocando así con su diminuta presencia e ignorancia ante el peligro que la tensión aumente, elevando el miedo al máximo. Siempre me ha encantado la fusión entre la inocencia y el terror, creo que da buenos resultados en este género.

If you don't have any problem with watching movies that are a bit old and also enjoy the genre, I personally recommend you to watch this film. It is a combination of classic horror, Asian influence and a story that surprisingly ends with a happy ending, something you don't see in horror movies, because the endings are usually quite bitter, but that is not the case of this film. If I'm honest, I liked the fact that it ended that way, because it is something you don't expect in this kind of movies. If you decide to watch it, I invite you to pay close attention to the signs, those little details enrich the story, which is already fantastic.

Si no tienes ningún problema con ver películas que son algo antiguas y además disfrutas del género, te recomiendo personalmente que veas este filme. Es la combinación entre el terror clásico, la influencia asiática y una historia que sorpresivamente termina con un final feliz, algo que no se ve en las películas de terror, porque los finales suelen ser bastante amargos, pero no es el caso de esta película. Si les soy sincero me gustó el hecho de que terminara de esa forma, pues es algo que no se espera en este tipo de películas. Si te decides a verla te invito a que prestes mucha atención a las señales, esos pequeños detalles enriquecen mucho a la historia que ya de por sí es fantástica.
