A walk in my hometown - Nafplio, Greece
Already a few days in my hometown and this is the first post I managed to write about the place I love most in the whole world. My contribution to #wednesdaywalk challenge by @tattoodjay and a lovely chance to walk you around Nafplio, one of the most beautiful, atmospheric and historical cities in Greece.
This walk will start from this specific spot, the beginning of the central park and a building where I have spent hours, since I was having math and physics lessons here. Abandoned for years now.
As well as these trains...
The castle of Palamidi is the signature of the city and visible from all sides. I will not share historic facts in this post, it will be more like a walk with friends, looking around, enjoying the moment and honoring the memories of my childhood.
Some cats are so funny when staring at my canine companion, Markos. Their look sometimes is priceless :)
Walking in front of my old high school, I had the most pleasant surprise. This amazing graffiti of a local poet that I grew up with his poems, Nikos Karouzos.
There are still signs of the Easter "flags", a Venetian tradition that lasted through the centuries. As you can see, we are already in the old part of the city heading towards the harbor.
That was my everyday walk for almost all my non-adult life. The small castle in the sea is another landmark of the city. The weather these days is lovely. Springtime with a smell of summer.
I have spent hours, maybe months in total sitting at this bench! And so many ice creams!
Quite crowded, I tried hard to capture some "empty" photos. Nafplio is a famous destination.
But a local can always find a quiet spot!
I thing romantic is the best description for this city. No wonder why it is full of couples in love. And the vibes of the city rise and rise :)
A night walk in the narrow streets of the small city. Full of stairs and beauty.
I plan to take a lot of photos and share a lot of info. But it is much more difficult than I thought. Since I live quite far away, I don't come often anymore, so when I am here I truly want to breath it all and live it all!
Happy walks everyone!
What a lovely area for a walk such a beautiful area
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
Thank you @tattoodjay! It is truly beautiful, although I cannot be objective, I love this place :)
Well to me from what you have shared it is beautiful and I can see why you love it
Glad you can feel it! Thank you @tattoodjay :)
Hello @traisto,
Seems you had a great day out!
I like the mood of the photos. I have a fascination with trains so it's interesting to see those abandoned ones. They add personality and character to the town.
The look of the cat is priceless indeed!
There's so much history in your hometown...
I'm not surprised that ice cream was on the cards, as it's such a beautiful location to sit and watch the hours go by. The castle in the water intrigues me too.
I'm happy I stumbled upon this post. I love romantic cities, as this one is on par with many other popular locations.
Nice one!
Have an awesome day:)
Thank you so much for your lovely comment dear @millycf1976!
That was indeed a very looong walk and a great day! Well, all days are nice when you are on holiday, aren't they?
These abandoned trains are one of my favorite spots. It used to be the train station there, but it doesn't work for over 50 years. Now it is a lovely park. The trains are quite modern, no idea how they put them in the park, since many parts of the railway tracks are under the asphalt and were put in the recent years. A mystery :) I will ask around out of curiosity ;)
So much history, yes! It was the first capital of modern Greece before Athens, so lots have happened here.
Glad you enjoyed it! xxxx
Wow, I'm happy that I stumbled upon the post. I am going to do further browsing on the area too when I have time. That will be a nice me-time activity.
I hope you holiday will continue well, and have a great weekend:)xx
Thanks sweet @millycf1976!
I will post more info as well! I love reading (and dreaming) about new places that I could travel to (or not). A very refreshing me-time activity, you are so right!
Have a wonderful weekend too! xxxx
😁, yeah it's a nice thing to do. Fills you with aspirations, and it's nice to dream :)
Greece appeals to me a lot for many reasons. I like the food, and it's also a country where someone (from Switzerland), who has been influential in my life, has been for just over a decade. She has nothing but lovely things to say about the country:)
Haha, food is REALLY important!!!
It is so interesting, so many people from well organized countries like Switzerland, enjoy the chaotic character of this small corner of the world. Mostly the weather and the sea of course:)
I am glad your friend is happy!
Sounds like it's almost time for a visit to Greece :)
Yeah, I do hope I get to visit Greece one day.
My friend spent many years in the Caribbean, and she loves Jamaica. I don't think places can get more chaotic than there. There's not much structure at all...still, having lived in other Third World countries, I've come to realise that there is a method to the madness in Jamaica...still better than madness being the method 🤣
Hahaha, sure!
A method to the madness, I love the description, suits well for this place too! Although I think you are right, things can be quite wild in Jamaica.
I hope that you will be able to visit Greece soon! Or any place you love!
xxxx
Thank you 😍😊
Oh how I wish I didn't live so far away! I would've joined you as you reminisce over your wonderful childhood memories. My favourite would've been the castle AFTER a lot of swimming in that beautiful ocean. And ice-creams. Plenty of them. Like you.
Savour every moment Fotini!
Swimming and ice-creams, yes @buckaroobaby!!! It would be awesome if you could join us! So awesome! Thank you so much!
I love the lighting, the streets lights; it feels so cozy. And that blue sign on the wall in the first photo. My childhood house had the exact same blue sign with the street name on it. Then I decided to go back there and
stealask if I could take the sign because it had so much value... the sign wasn't there anymore.Cozy is a good description :) It has warm lighting, still. I don't know why but most cities in Greece have started changing their lights to cold, which is... cold.
I wish you had found the sign. Almost all our street signs are like this. Yours have changed into something else?
Yours have changed into something else?
Yeah, they still keep the old blue signs if they are there, but mostly the new signs are boring square signs on a post (that vandals destroy in seconds). We can never have cool stuff over here without people destroying everything
That's a pity... It's the same here, maybe not as much as there, but pretty common!
