A walk in the old town - Nafplio, Greece
Here we are again walking around the old town of Nafplio, my hometown. We were supposed to be back to the island and our farm 2 days ago, but we are having such a great time that we gave ourselves one more week to fully enjoy our holiday. We are making some trips around, like this one we did yesterday and @fotostef shares here :)
I will take you for a walk to my favorite places.
This is the central square where as a kid I used to bike exactly like these two little fellows.
At the background you can see part of the castle of Palamidi, visible from almost every spot of the old and new city.
The city is quite flat, ideal for bicycles.
We used to hang out on this lion-bench, lots of ice-creams included :)
The street that leads to the square is full of cozy small shops and café, photographers with style included :)
I am in love with this city, so I can only share some photos to bring my love to your screens!
Most of the houses are built after the Greek Revolution in 1821 and Nafplio back then was the first capital of the modern Greek state.
1841
You have to be very observative here to see the label 1861 :)
The characteristic flower of Nafplio is bougainvillea.
The castle is always present. Our first house where I lived till the age of 12 before we move to the new part of the city, was just under these rocks.
Even the abandoned buildings look cute here. Don't forget that I am in love with this place, so everything looks magic to me :))
And history fascinates me. Hopefully I will share more posts about the historical parts of my birthplace soon.
Sending you all love! Happy walks everyone!

How wonderful that we got to see this place that is so special to you. Looks like a great place to grow up and ride bikes and eat ice cream. So glad you guys extended your vacation!
Thank you dear Sara! It is a great place to grow up. Especially several decades back, when we had such a nice freedom to express the imagination and creativity of our childhood. I am pretty sure it is not the same nowadays, although it is still very nice as I see from my friend's kids :)
I can understand your joy, it's normal. The place of childhood is magical, no matter what it looks like. Your childhood place is more than that. It's a beautiful city, as evidenced by both your descriptions and your photos. What I find remarkable is that I see no cars in your photos.
Glad you were able to extend your vacation. I think this should become a habit if it isn't already.
Thank you for what you let me know and see about Nafplio!
Thank you @bluemoon! You are right, there are no cars in most of the streets of the old town (most of it is pedestrian area), apart from the main streets and some parked cars of the permanent residents that have access to come through by car. There are plenty of them all around though, nothing is perfect! Plus, if it is possible, I try not to include cars in the photo, a bit sneaky I must confess :)
I'm starting to have a problem with too many cars, although I still see their usefulness, I wish they weren't so heavily used in cities. Beyond the noise, and pollution there is something else unpleasant happening because of cars. People become more and more wild and uncivilized when driving cars, for me, any car trip in the city stresses me a lot. I think that at your home, in Crete, there is not this problem but I think that in Athens you have noticed this violent manifestation of drivers.
Thanks for the reply!
I don't think we are made for sitting in such a limited space like a car for hours every day (I wonder how claustrophobic people manage) in these stressful streets, full of neurotic drivers (nowadays more than ever).
Even in Crete, people drive like crazy. There are some villages, or whole islands without cars. It is obvious there what you notice. All of a sudden everyone gets calmer in an environment without speed, noise and tense.
But I love driving long distances through a nice landscape.
City centers in my opinion should be car-free. Imagine that!
I hope that city centers will become car-free, as you say. I imagine and enjoy just thinking about it. I think it can happen, @traisto!
Me too! I just did and got to the sea for a few days. That's why I made this break here. I see that you are also missing, you must have a lot of work on the farm.
