Food Sharing #220 - The Northeast Restaurant @ Kingsford, Australia

Hi Everyone,

A rare occasion when we don’t have the kids for the weekend so lunch is just to cater what we what, not what the kiddies will eat if they were with us. Kingsford is near our old uni so going there would mean there will be a variety of restaurants to choose from with cheap prices compared to surrounding suburbs as they need to be affordable for the students living around uni. We decided to go to The Northeast Restaurant which specialise the north eastern cuisines in China. I normally don’t eat dishes from around this area as there is too much spices, chilli and garlic but thought let’s give it a go since the weather is getting cold so a bit of chilli is fine for the body.

There is no physical menu, everything is ordered via the iPad. We chose 5 dishes coming to a total of $57. Ordering was easy with the menu in both Simplified Chinese, English and with very clear photos. The decor around the restaurant is old school Chinese designs giving the customer a feeling they are eating in China. The whole restaurant is filled with chilli and spice smell but we made sure the dishes aren’t to spicy for me.

Here are the dishes. All of them are of reasonable size, I guess being in a place near uni, they have to not only provide good food but large sizes to keep students happy. First comes the mushroom buns. Gosh these buns looks exactly like the shiitake mushrooms from the shop. Even the bottom of the mushroom looks like the real thing. The bun was super soft with lots of mushroom inside. Next comes the dried tofu with chives and pigs ears. There was so much garlic in this dish it actually tasted really nice with the soy sauce combo. Love the taste of this dish, the only thing I hope that would be better is they put in less dried tofu and more of chives and pigs ear would be perfect. Yummy dish!

Next is the pork trotter. This is just one trotter so just enough for hubby as I don’t eat trotter at all. I did have a small bite and the taste was ok but nothing to be excited for. Next is the smoked pork knuckle. It was sliced very evenly but looks very dry and boring. It came with a sauce and that sauce paired with the meat was delicious! The sauce is really the highlight of this dish. Lots of garlic, red salty sauce really matches well with the meat. Highly recommend this one to everyone! Lastly is the tofu and century eggs paired with soy sauce. Nothing over exciting but I love century eggs so it’s a nice cold dish to balance out all the heavy flavoured sauces.

Seating here is comfortable. Although we did visit during lunch hour, the restaurant was pretty quiet as it is currently uni holiday so most people are away for domestic travels. Service was simple so don’t expect full attention from the staff. Serving sizes were substantial and prices are pretty attractive considering their main customers are uni students. We still love going to Kensington for a cheap hearty meal, we always find gems when we visit.
