We Now Have a Bookworm At Home

Hi Everyone,

Since COVID lockdown, I think my kids and I have been haunted by the fact we need to put up with each other to do any homework. School resumed for 3 weeks and I have been asking my little ones to do the minimal homework so they can enjoy their after school activities or the time with hubby after his work. Recently during quiet time in class, he told us he started reading a book called "The Bad Guys". Its a simple comic book with a cute story and he has been reading that series every day at school. I haven't been able to read that often but he enjoys our story time when I read to him. So to finally see him find something he likes to read, I am super excited to explore those kid of books to get him to start on his mini book collection.

We took him to Target to see what else he could start reading as he has finished the first 10 volumes of The Bad Guys. He was trying to get his head around the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, didn't like it and then found out about Dog Man. Its similar to the other books, colour comic style with a bit of reading to do. Not only he liked the first few pages of Dog Man, he asked if we can buy the first book first and see how he would enjoy it. I don't mind spending money on books so we bought 1 to try. He did to read a bit of Fartboy but didn't like it so we ended up buying Dog Man.

After we got home, he got right into it. He was even thinking about when he was in bed and came out to ask if it was ok to read another 10 minutes before he goes to bed while his brother was already snoring. I told him it was ok and had him sat down next to me while I was playing a bit of games. I looked over and can see my child is no longer a baby, he is growing up and finally knows what he wants to read. It was rough when we spoken to the teacher about his reading and the teacher said it takes time for them to explore. I'm glad we were patient and didn't force him to read anything he didn't want to or else he would hate reading. I wasn't a huge book worm when I was young, I love comics so even now, I would spend money on comics over some random book. The other thing is I would want him to hold physical books, not a kindle. I don't believe in books on a small device, books are to be read with the reader flipping the page, smelling the pages .....

well done!
I am still on a hunt for a good, interesting comic book for my 5yo daughter - she liked some stories but so far nothing that she would love.

She prefers playing Mario on her Nintendo :/

My kids love the screen time but I'm glad we waited for him to find something he likes rather than forcing something he hated. I'm sure your daughter will get it, she is still young, give her some time :)

Seeing a kid with a book in his hand is wonderful .. I wished my boys would do this instead off just sticking their nose in front of the pc or phone

Hahaha its too hard for him to read himself cos he is only 6 BUT we have finished the 1st book during bedtime and we are onto the next one hahaha. He loved the movie though cos we have read the book so he knows what is happening.

Lucky books are kinda cheaper than when I was growing up so can buy some and borrow some from the library as well :)
