25 Schilling - Mozart (1956, Austria)

Today's coin features somebody you have probably heard a few times in your life. And by heard, I don't just mean his name. But his music as well.

I'll leave the pictures reveal who I am taking about:

Yep, Wolfgang Amadeus fucking Mozart. One of the greatest, if not the greatest music composers ever. In case you don't know him...Yeah, no comment. Just google him, he is somewhat of a big deal.

In case you don't know, he was born in Salzburg which currently resides in Austria. Which explains Mozart's presence in a commemorative Austrian coin of 25 Schilling. The coin was minted in 1956 to commemorate the 200th Anniversary since his birth.
As you can see this side of the coin features a full fledged figure of Mozart and some pretty much self explanatory text.

Now let's flip the coin and see it from the other side

For starters, we have the denomination and country of origin, the republic of Austria that is.

And then we have the flags of the Austrian states. You can click here if you'd like to read more on them.

And last but not least...The edge!

Edge inscriptions are always a nice little extra bonus.

It reads

FUENFUNDZWANZIG SCHILLING

For

Twenty Five Shillings

Lol. I'd expect a quote or something from Mozart but they went for something really boring, the denomination. As if we would miss it somehow 😄

When it comes to silver, we have 13 g of 0.800 purity, or 10.4 g of pure silver. With today's spot price of 0.81 $ per g that is almost 8.5 $ worth of melting value. Neat!

Here are some more boring coin semantics from numista in case you are interested:

Issuer: Austria
Period: Second Republic (1945-date)
Type: Non-circulating coin
Year: 1956
Currency: Second Schilling (1945-2001)
Diameter: 30.5 mm
Thickness: 2.13 mm
Shape: Round
Technique: Milled
Orientation: Medal alignment ↑↑
Demonetized: 1 January 2002

All in all, this is a beautifully done coin and I am really glad I have it in such god condition. Plus it has a decent amount of silver. If you are into classical music I guess it's a must have!

In other news, it seems like BullionExchanges has an Eagle and Maple oz coins at spot price per household as we speak. If you like cheap silver, who doesn't, go and check if the offer is still valid!

Ok plebs, this is it for today!

Stack on!

That is a true beauty! Mozart was brilliant, I'm not sure there has been anyone that has eclipsed his talent in over 200 years. That is a really nice coin, they don't come in much better condition than that!

Nice coin. I definitely heard about him before but I don't listen to classical music much at all. He is definitely one of the most well known musicians over time.
