Made a new friend today!

I am still enjoying my holidays and today as we were taking a walk we stumbled upon this cute little critter:

A not so common sight, a male ladybird spider of the Eresus genus. Dunno the exact species, possibly Eresus sandaliatus.

FYI, only male Eresus spiders are that colorful, females tend to have boring ground colors.

Males live underground only coming out in summer to mate so consider yourself lucky if you ever see one. I am 35 and that's only the second time I get to see one, last one was exactly a decade ago!

And despite their bright colors there is nothing to fear, they are totally harmless. But since they are out to have sex better make em a favor and leave them alone with their horniness!

Feel free to learn more about these fellas at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eresus

Absolutely gorgeous velvet spider. We don't have any spiders in my neck of the woods like this one, wow. That wikipedia article you linked is fascinating. That banding on some of their legs is just mesmerizing along with on their abdomen.

You've inspired me to try and snap a few photos of the spiders that keep me company. Love 'em, feel like they're my friends. Yesterday, I accidentally got a big one wet in the basin and I scooped them out on a spatula and deposited them on a pebble I have in the sun on the windowsill to try off, I haven't checked yet today if they're still there but I will go do.

Have you heard of https://www.inaturalist.org/? It's a pretty nifty ai-powered identification app on your phone. It's pretty good actually for spiders!

More spider shots!

@Trumpman many thanks sir,
Your writing talent has been great. There are several species of spiders. It is called small red spider in our language.
You inspired me to try to snap a few pictures of spiders that accompany me. Their love, it seems they are my friends.

It's a beautiful spider! I definitely have to make a suit with these colors to flirt this summer.

Most of our spiders are better left alone and any bright colors normally means danger. I suppose you had your eyes peeled to the ground looking for coins lol.
