Australian 3 Pence (1943)

avatar

Few days ago I shared a piece from the Dominican Republic, and from there we take a trip of over 17 thousands kilometres all over to Australia!

Today we have an Australian 3 pence from 1943. Let's have a closer look on the coin!

On the reverse side we have three wheat heads with a ribbon, the minting date, the denomination and the country of origin.

I couldn't find much info about this symbol on the internet, so I ended up asking chatgbt. Assuming the information provided was correct, the three wheat heads symbolize the importance of the agricultural industry for Australia, while the ribbon on the wheats represents the unity of the three branches of the armed forces; navy, army, and air force.

Ok, let's turn the coin to the other side

A typical George VI portrait, as expected from the year the coin was minted. Btw, nice haircut fren 😍

The letters read "GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP. HP", which is a common Latin inscription that appears on coins issued during the reign of King George VI, and translate to " "George VI, by the grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India."

Now, this coin is really, really small. It's really cool how even small change were silver back in the old days.

Here"s a comparison with a standard euro coin to see what I mean:

Just 1.41 g heavy, but the purity is really, really good at 0.925, which is the highest among all the coins I own!

Small, beautiful design, Hugh purity. That's pretty much sums today's coin!

Oh nice to know more about this Hybrid wheat coin, it was minted in Melbourne, and you know the coin was designed by 2 different people, obverse was done by Thomas Paget, while reverse was created by George Gray.

Still, not close Canadian silver coins. haha

Yeah, I usually don't go that deep into who has designed the symbols and stuff unless I really dig the design. Thanks for sharing 😍

One or three pence at a time makes you rich. 😀 That would be a funny saying, but considering it is a silver coin and it is from 1943, the numismatic value puts more value into it.

It's nice and I don't think size is everything. Easy to carry coins are great and times have changed.

the people down under loved putting a lot of silver in their coins back then. And I thought they were stingy bastards :)

I think I have noticed something. Whenever I try to compare old stuffs to new stuffs, the old one tends to be better than the new one.
It will even be of more quality more than the new one.
