Extraterrestrial Coin..Short of!

avatar

I was finishing yet another order of silver and came across a really cool coin that piqued my interest.

Now, I didn't end up buying it since it had a ridiculous price but it's definitely worth a share and I totally understand why many would buy it.

So, without further ado

Meet the Chondrite Meteorite 5$ coin:

So, not much going on this side...Other than a real piece of meteorite in the middle!

Here's a photo from another angle

The meteorite fragment comes from the NWA 4037 impact, a code used for several meteorites that were found in 2005 in Northwest Africa, Morocco. These meteorites stemmed originally from one meteorite that shattered into several parts as it entered the atmosphere.

This side of the coin is shaped like that to symbolize a crater in case you didn't notice ;)

It weighs 1 oz (0.999 silver) and was issued in 2015 by Cook islands. Mintage is 2500.

Since it's a coin and everything, the other side is pretty boring, with Queen Eli and the denomation of 5$:

Here's a video of this bad boy:

After a bit of googling, it seems like this piece starts from around 150$, a hefty price for a oz coin... But at least you get something extraterrestrial as a bonus 😜

Definitely a unique novelty. Now that I think of it again, 150$ doesn't sound that bad maybe I'll get one in the future :)

That's pretty cool. I agree, though, $150 is a bit too much for 1oz of silver.

This is a sick one!

At first I thought it's price is $5 and this can't be ridiculous price until I saw that $150... Still make sense for a rare piece like that.

First time seeing meteorite on a coin..

more than 100 bucks for 1 oz of silver isn't that too much even though having a metorite part is cool

That is cool! Meteorites are very expensive in the first place. So I'm sure part the expense was obtaining pieces big enough to cut up and slap on the coin. Great find, that's awesome but at $150 it's going to have to wait for now!

Start thinking $180 for that Ounce of Silver, but not in Fiat USD's, in Silver and Gold Coins...

Really a peculiar and interesting coin. A piece of space on a coin makes this coin interesting! Kudos to whoever thought of creating this coin!

Very cool, but definitely too expensive!

It sounds cool but it's a bit too pricey. Then again, the chances of picking up a meteorite is quite low.

Heard of this coin but never really seen it. It's literally a hole in the ground. It would make for a cool gift to an Astronomer friend.

Although pretty expensive, I like the idea and it's a cool thing to have as a collector for sure. Not paying that price though lol..
