Steel penis!

avatar

Ermmmm, I meant steel pennies!

So, a couple months ago I bought for 15 euros a cool coin album, full of all kinds of regular American coins, including quarters, pennies, half dollars etc.

The total amount in USD was equal to 13.5 $ but imo the price was more than a steal since just the price of the album if it was empty would be at least 4-5 euros. Not to mention the effort and cost of collecting all the coins and placing them in the paper sleeve they came with!

Back then my thought was it would be something cool to have for a fair price. Little did I know that the euro soon after would start to go down and down, making my "investment" even smarter 😂

Anyways, yesterday I was checking the coins out and noticed that two of the pennies were a bit weird...

Notice the color difference compared to the regular penny in the middle!

My first thought was...hmm are they made of silver ? I wish 😂

Turns out they are actually made of steel and they are a remnant of World War II when the US faced copper shortages so they experimented with other metals and materials, even plastic 😂

1943 steel cents are U.S. one-cent coins that were struck in steel due to wartime shortages of copper. The Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints each produced these 1943 Lincoln cents. The unique composition of the coin (low-grade steel coated with zinc, instead of the previously 95%-copper-based bronze composition) has led to various nicknames, such as wartime cent, steel war penny, zinc cent and steelie.

Quick fun fact, these are the only regular-issue US coins that can be picked up with a magnet!

The wikipedia articles on the subject turned out way more interesting than I expected. I would never imagine all the problems and stuff that would arise from using non-standard materials for minting a coin! Feel free to check em out:

I saw the title of the post and just laughed out loud 😂

I was in a meeting 😂

Nevertheless, I think it looks rather cool. I don't know if it's my device, but it seems to have a bronze like finishingor something like that😂😂

Silver or steel, what's the difference? :)))) We cannot strike gold each time, but it is quite interesting when getting into the history of the coins and discovering unexpected facts.

1982 and older pennies are worth 2.4 cents at scrap prices.

I still find them in change from stores, but not in the quantities of years past.
Nickels are .06usd, too.
I save them both for after the collapse of the banks.

Saving change takes money out of the bankster's pockets, too, because they have to pay the treasury face value for the coins.
So, a dollar of change in your jar is a dollar they can't use against you.

Nice pick up, they would’ve cost much more here. The zinc pennies are sought after here. Hold onto them.

Nice coins and it's great that the notebook is all labeled. I guess you don't need to do much to categorize the coins.
