Ready for another piece of totally useless but interesting information?

Ok! What would you guess if I asked you how old is the world's oldest company that still survives today?

If I were to take a guess I'd say 200 maybe 300 years. That would take us all the way back to the early 1700s when our world used to be a totally different place! No cars, no electricity, not even steam trains 😂

Before reading the answer take a guess and leave a comment!

Ok, are you ready?

The answer is Kongō Gumi Co., Ltd., which was founded all the way back to fucking 578 A.D making it about 1445 years old!!!

In 578, Kongō Shikō, one of the three Miyadaiku (specialized carpenters who build shrines and temples) invited by Prince Shōtoku from Baekje to construct Shitennō-ji, founds the company. Until the Edo period, Kongō Gumi remains the Miyadaiku for Shitennō-ji.

Today the company is still in the construction sector, building, repairing and restoring shrines, temples, castles, and other fancy japanese shit.

The company has a really fascinating history, you can visit wikipedia if you'd like to learn more. One thing is for sure, it has survived a lot of bear markets 😂

Interestingly, all the first five oldest companies that still survive are from Japan. In the sixth spot though we have St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, a restaurant in Austria that has been operating since before AD 803!

Ok, hoped you enjoyed this titbit of information!

P.S. Photo is just a stock image, not related with any of the companies mentioned in the post!

Interesting as the oldest one I have had business with is only 200 years old lol. There are actually quite a few in the 200-300 year old bracket but not household names as they own the household names under their umbrellas. You can imagine being the relative or CEO that takes it under having lasted for so long.

It is the oldest company but now it is not in whole as it is acquired by Takamatsu Construction Group in 2006, now it is Takamastu.

I went to a hot spring that was over 1000 years old in Kyoto. But I think it's actually closed since that time. So it goes. Always interesting that so many businesses were able to survive so long.
