Copy and get it right! Don’t spend all your life creating.

Well, I am not encouraging anyone to plagiarize. If you copy contents from any source and paste on Hive, you will be downvoted to 0. This isn’t about stealing, it is far more than stealing people’s properties. It is about understanding that nothing is new, as they wrote it in the Bible - Ecclesiastes 1:9.

I read the book by Austin Kleon, Steal Like an Artist and I want to share some knowledge about it. Nothing is original. Most of the things we call original are because we do not understand or know the source. Every technology out there is more like an upgrade, mashup, remix, or copy. The algorithm around cryptocurrency is not new, but it is what we are following today.

Everything has been existing before but in potentials. It only takes a creative mind to discover them. William Ralph Inge defined originality as undetected plagiarism.

Thomas Thwaites wanted to create a toasting machine from scratch and he went to a store, got a toaster, and pieced everything. After he deconstructed the machine, he found over 400 components that make up a toaster. He thought it would be something pretty simple. However, he continued. He went on, got the required iron. He gathered plastic and molded it to the shape of the toaster and he finished his toaster. But the result was a disaster. He could not get an excellent result and he realized starting from scratch on an idea can take a lifetime. Vitalik Buterin saw the great value on Bitcoin and incorporated smart contract, but the original owner of the idea and work is Nick Szabo. Nick Szabo made the first virtual currency, Bit Gold, in 1998. Vitalik Buterin did not start the Ethereum blockchain from scratch. He followed a working process.

Don’t think from scratch. It may take you all your life to achieve one thing. You need to copy. Newborn babies don’t come out knowing who they are. They grow to learn from their environment. They learn from copying what people are saying.

This isn’t about claiming other people’s work, it is about reverse-engineering people’s work. You need to copy, copy, and keep on copying. It will give you result on time than starting from scratch.

Start Copying!

Humans are copiers. Full stop. I am sometimes ambivalent about the morality of copying, but there is no doubt that we have only come this far as a civilization because we copy.

This article sparked memory of a line from the U2 song The Fly

Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief

Thinking about this led me down a rabbit hole that led to this great article
