Alsace ~ Noble land of the aromatic white wines

Alsace finds it's home in France where German and Switzerland meet their borders with the country. Held by the Rhine River/German border to the east and Vosges Mountain range to the west. Through out history each country has held the land as their own, creating a unique culture, one of the original fusion food and wine regions if you will. Alsace Map The blend of cultural foods really lended itself to the wine style they historically produced. High fat foods, cut by high acid wines. Mostly white.

The noble varieties are: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris

Some of these can be consumed young and fresh, but bottled under cork, some can age for a decade or so. Lots of fun to try some well aged whites that most people dont desire to collect and keep held in their cellars.

1994 Gewurztraminer
only lasted a couple hours before it fell away
dried florals and honey on the nose and pallet, tinge of acidity from dried stonefruit notes on the finish.

2013 Humbrecht Riesling
Bright acidity, could have aged longer. Tonnes of citrus, hints of petrol, round mouth feel. honey suckle sweetness balance out acidity. A well known producer, creating whites with exceptionally long press cycles and skin contact.

Cheers!
