What are daily costs

Besides being a strategy game using cards NFTs, it is important to understand that Splinterlands is also about resource management. Maybe not everyone sees it that way and this reality might be a bit different when comparing who buys / who rents, but overall the premise is the same.

When we talk about daily costs, it is important to be clear that it does not include spending on Spellbook or buying cards after all these are sporadic expenses, they are only the resources necessary to allow you to reach the highest potential rewards on a daily basis. Currently daily spending can be divided into two:

  • Renting SPS.
  • Renting cards.

These two resources are extremely necessary to allow you to play in a larger league and maximize your rewards, but it is not enough to indiscriminately climb leagues or rent hundreds of thousands of SPS if you are not going to use them because it would be a big waste of money.

Daily costs.

Identify the break-even point

Although there are currently no more limitations preventing you from moving up a league, your card collection can be an indirect hindrance as you will not be able to compete properly against other players if you do not have the right cards. I play in Gold I and although I have the resources to rent more SPS/Cards, this would result in an increase in my costs and would not generate such a great result in revenue due to the need to make a huge investment in my collection and the lack of experience in this league (which would result in a lower win rate).

Being aware of this, my main goal becomes to find out what is the balance point between my daily costs and the potential return of my matches, after all we are talking about a game play2earn and our secondary goal is to have a profitable account.

Break-even point.

To find this answer we will need to know how to calculate two things:

  • Our costs.
  • Our revenues.

Revenue is all the rewards earned in Brawls, Tournaments, Ranked Matches and daily/seasonal chests, but although there are several sources of reward I prefer to take into account only the rewards for winning battles for this calculation, because it is easier to establish a good margin of profit for your account. This does not include profits from letter rentals and other sources of income as they do not make sense for what we are calculating.

All that remains now is to understand how to calculate the daily costs and make the final calculation of revenue - costs = profit.

Calculating daily costs

As mentioned earlier there are two factors that comprise this calculation which are SPS rental costs and letter rental costs. When you open a SPS rental BID you will fill in all the information according to your needs and the total amount you will need to spend will appear. I recommend doing this process through Peakmonsters as you will find a much more user-friendly interface and decrease the chances of making a mistake in some step of this process.

image.png

In this situation I will have a total expenditure of 630 DEC but as our goal is to identify the daily costs it is necessary to divide this value by 7, arriving at the value of 90 DEC/day. Now to find out what your daily spending on card rental is just access the tab My Cards of Peakmonsters and observe the line Rentals (filterable) which is in the first information on the upper left side.

image.png

Now we just need to add the two values and we have the answer of my daily costs.

90 + 1 + 478.85 = 569.85 DEC/day ($0.46)

The rewards earned daily ONLY on ranked wins equate to approximately 25 SPS ($0.58), so subtracting this gives a positive result of $0.12 per day. It may seem like a pathetic profit (and it is) but remember that we are disregarding absolutely all other possible rewards such as season chests, brawls, tournaments and the future possibility of selling the Soulbound cards.

Try doing these calculations with your account and comment on this post if you are currently working in profit or loss. Many people spend more on rent than they are able to earn in rewards and don't even know it, so learning how to calculate your daily costs is extremely important to ensure the sustainability of your account!

Oh, for sure
It would be really nice to include a video game played on all OS in Hive.
Some, including I find it difficult to understand it Because I'm used to video games (also many people and gamers out there) than playing cards

Good food for thought as this is something I hadn't really considered since I have tried to make a point of owning my cards instead of renting anything.

There are these two types of investments and both can be right, one bets on continuous profitability and the other bets on asset appreciation in the long run
