E N G L I S H

Recently, I've been catching up with what's new in horror and science fiction cinema. It turns out that after reviewing several pages of moviegoers (and some other Facebook group), I came across this work of the seventh art that has been classified in Asia as "the most terrifying of this year", causing terrible nightmares and dismay to people who have already seen it (actually I did not see anything special), apparently advertising has fooled me again and today I come to tell you in this article my impressions.

E S P A Ñ O L

While everything seems to be going normally, she begins to notice strange behaviors in her niece; Mink, who also possesses psychic abilities that attract the attention of spirits. Soon, Mink's mother and aunt realize that she is possessed by something evil and not by the essence of the goddess Bayan, who had always possessed the women in her family. Things begin to escalate into lurid and insane situations, while Mink's physical and mental health condition worsens: Will they be able to expel the evil entity controlling her from her body?

Sinopsis

Personal opinion

I think the plot of the film and its story seemed very interesting to me; they introduce you favorably to know ancestral beliefs of this country, however, the cinematographic elements that were used to develop it, did not surprise me fruitfully, because it is already something that has been seen before in films such as: The Blair Witch Project, REC, Paranormal Activity, among others. That is, the film is presented as a documentary type footage, in which some filmmakers elaborate a work on "The History of Shamanism in Thailand", basically that's what it is, and as I said before, and with the examples I have given, it is for me nothing new.

In my introduction I placed almost at the end that: "Advertising has fooled me again", because before watching this movie, I started to investigate it reading several reviews, calling it "the best horror movie of the year", pure garbage. Perhaps it is the atmosphere that should be proportional to the type of film they want to expose us to; one that causes us a rising terror and anxiety, but something that seems to me very exaggerated is to say that this film is so terrifying that you have to watch it with the lights on.

One thing I do recognize about Asians, is that they know how to sell you things very well; we see it in commerce, both physical and digital, but once you try their products you realize that they are no big deal. The film caught my attention at the beginning because of its documentary-like style that unfolds very well at the beginning of the film, but after all this business of the possession of the protagonist and the catastrophic events that occur later, it becomes a film more like REC, in which the cameramen only follow the steps of the possessed and this is when it ends its main documentary style.

By this I mean that it's nothing new what we'll see and it doesn't make much of an impression either. If you are familiar with the previous work of the producer of this film: The Wailing, you will realize the similarity between the two films, with a similar ending except that it is a different story, and with an approach to which you don't see much difference.

The scenes where the cameramen are attacked reminded me so much of REC, it's hard not to make a comparison between the two films. The truth is that I was expecting a more piercing impact so that I had to leave the lights on while watching it, however, I am grateful for a different story coming from an ancient culture.

Conclusions

Although I wouldn't put it on my list of this year's favorites, for being a mixture of previous film projects, the movie is certainly entertaining, if you are new to this field, there are parts that will really impress you. In it, you will not only find a millennial belief, but a coherent story, full of spiritual possessions, cannibalism, freneticism and a clear mix between the supernatural and the ordinary. I wouldn't recommend it for an expert horror movie lover, but for a wider audience that also enjoys this kind of films.
