—No dices nada.

THE RIDDLE

In a land of castles and knights, of petulant kings and pretentious princes, where there are discontented peoples and others in power who drain with fury the attributes of their privilege. What is hidden is the back of the mirror, which we see tangible by peering into it, yet we omit that place at our convenience, though some seek it to find a mystery or a salvation.

Egaeus was a typical presumptuous knight of the emblematic court of Valencia. His arrogance was well supported by his many skills in battle, the impetus of his voice and the gallant way in which he frolicked with his horse through the streets of the city. His attractive appearance before the maidens aroused a passionate desire in them to give up their virginity, but Egaeus' heart had bottomed out before the captive gaze of a young lady, with whom he could never get through a word.

Mirian was the youngest protégé of the king, daughter of the extinct lineage of the Valdomare, one of the most important noble families of Valencia. She always carried a terrible memory in her face, tarnished by melancholy; a tragedy that struck her family with a vengeance. The King of Valencia, being a distant relative of the Valdomare, decided to take Mirian as his protégée although she preferred to be held captive in one of the royal towers of the kingdom.

Despite her dark aura full of sadness, Egaeus could not resist Mirian's exhausting beauty. Although he only saw her for a fleeting moment, it was enough to throw his heart into the arms of love. Her golden hair, like shimmering waterfalls. Her eyes green as the most unpolluted emerald. Her fleshy lips that should be as soft as the coat of meek quilts. Her skin as white as the snow of a winter paradise. To him, she was like an angel trapped in the prisons of anguish. A flower surrounded by calamity and misery. She was the woman he wanted to marry and only needed the permission of her protector, the king, to be able to fulfill his mission.

Egaeus always strove to be the best, to obtain any favor granted by the king, but his heart turned to an unexpected turn, when he learned that Mirian's hand had been promised to the unlucky Ulysses, "Dance of Petals", as they called him at the court of the Knights. After knowing this, not a minute passed before Egaeus was burning with anger, the woman he loved and for whom he would give his life, was going to marry his most despicable rival, it was too much to bear.

Motivated by this, he decided one night to visit his beloved in her quarters in the silver tower of the castle where she resided. As he was very much loved by his companions and the guards, he had no trouble getting in. Stealthy within the long corridors of the royal fortress, he arrived at the tower with his heart racing to see his lady, and when he had finally reached the door of his room, he was paralyzed, it was the first time he had been stiff in a situation of being a man of war, but his desire was stronger than his fear, so he knocked on the door.

The beautiful lady opened the door and saw him standing in front of the entrance. For the gentleman the surprise was not minor, he had no words, not even cordial phrases that implied a greeting. However, Mirian escaped his astonishment and spoke to him:

—You don't seem to be a maid or a lady in waiting. A gentleman standing in front of my door, what else should happen to me, I don't think you came to take me under escort, though why else would you be here?

Egaeus, the daring one, was still shocked by the spell Mirian was casting on him. The words still would not leave his mouth. He could not stop looking at her. She was beautiful, but cold, like a radiant spring invaded by a frigid blizzard. I watched her melancholy face, savoring the sound of her sweet voice. I wanted to touch her hands, which looked soft and shivering. Because of all these elements, the knight did not escape from his amazement for being in front of Mirian.

—You don't say anything. —Said the impatient lady. —That makes me understand that your intentions in coming are not those I speculate. You'd better leave or I'll call the guards and tell them you've broken into my room for unknown reasons, so let's avoid all this and get out. My eyes are invaded by sleep, if you don't say anything or try anything, then I'll just close the door.

And the maid did so, leaving the gallant knight in suspense and ridicule. Egaeus felt absurd. He did not understand what happened to him. It seems that the power Mirian had over him was stronger than he thought. After that event, he felt very ashamed, his beloved would no longer see him as a sublime man, and even more, he thought about the fact that she would marry his rival. Egaeus thought of doing something about it.

From the mouths of the inhabitants of the slums of Valencia; from potters, merchants and superstitious contractors, he heard rumors of a witch who lives in the swampy ends of the city. She had the power to make people's deepest longings come true, but there was a trick to it, which the user had to do himself.

It was a riddle, imposed by the sorceress that will help to awaken a hidden spell, and if it was answered, it will raise a magic that will make any wish come true. Egaeus, in his nights visiting fraternal bars, always believed that this was a drunken story, but he was desperate for help and if it was a lie he had nothing to lose.

So he set out on his quest to find the root of that rumor among the very same people who taught it. He met people who claimed to have benefited from the witch's work. He encountered seemingly real and somewhat lurid situations when it came to the desires that these people expressed, and although the noble knight was not completely convinced, the image of his beloved was enough to continue, so he set out on his journey to the swamp to find the sorceress who fulfills his desires with her riddles.
