E N G L I S H

THE IONIC SPECTRUM

I had left immediately for Augusto Colmenares' house. Augusto, who politically was my cousin, had received a very strange wound in the chest. I did not know more details from his wife; Julia, she only told me that she was very terrified and that she could not explain exactly how it happened. I was accompanied by my colleague in medicine; Miguel, who, when I mentioned the case to him, insistently wanted to accompany me.

We took the fastest way and, upon arrival, we found the whole family in distress and Augusto prostrate inert with a burn on his chest in the shape of a hand. Sergeant Federico had arrived earlier at the scene with his team, trying to decipher what had happened from the facts presented to him. The insufficient information they had was that Augusto had gone out for a moment to the patio to water the plants, when suddenly a roar was heard; like the serious screeching of a short circuit, and when they went to go there they found the poor man lying on the ground with his chest smoking.

The entire Colmenares family was present that day, as they had gathered with plans for a barbecue. They exchanged family cordiality for soul-crushing sobs. Patricia, Augusto's sister, said that she had heard a noise in the bushes in the garden half an hour before the event, but she ignored it completely because she thought it was the cats.

Patricia's husband, Manuel, said that he had noticed Augusto very strange since he arrived, as he had a withdrawn and quiet attitude, something quite unusual for him, as he was a very lively person. The others present agreed with Manuel's clarification, but avoided asking questions to poor Augusto so as not to fall into questions about his work.

The wound was very strange, it was a third degree burn that lethally melted the flesh very quickly. It was shaped like a hand; as I mentioned before, and it went from the clavicles to the lower part of the pectorals. My colleague, Miguel, was as surprised as I was. We noticed that the victim was still breathing and we used everything in our power to save him and regularize his vital signs.

As we did our job, we listened to Sergeant Federico's assumptions to the family. All they did was cry and look crestfallen, apparently no one really saw what happened. It was all very strange, because the wound must have been generated by a higher intensity artifact, and if it had been in Augusto's chest any longer, it would have stopped his heart forever. We were amazed by the man's strong resistance and will to live, for even though he was unconscious, he was struggling to hold on.

We plunged into the afternoon of that day. The whole atmosphere was becoming more and more gray and melancholic. The clouds covered the sun leaving us with little light in the environment, it seemed that the night was anxious to tuck us in that dreadful moment. The sergeant kept questioning the Colmenares, while we finally managed to stabilize poor Augusto. He could breathe a little better, although his wounds were still too delicate. Vicenta, Augusto's mother, anxiously asked us to stay a little longer in case something happened, I accepted without any problem and Miguel did the same.

We stayed contemplating how the night was falling over the house. Everyone was still being held by the sergeant, suspected of attempted murder. Several family members were furious, for although they wanted answers about what happened to Augusto, they resented the fact that they were being told outright that they were guilty.

In my stillness, as I watched all the chaos in the atmosphere, I began to hear a squeaking noise coming from one of the crystalline decorative objects in the room. It was in the shape of a triangle, and in it I caught a glimpse of a figure; the shape of a person, perhaps, with a completely luminescent body. I approached it in trance mode, while everyone was concentrating on shouting at each other, and as I did so, the figure grew larger and extended one of its arms to try to reach me. Quickly Miguel grabbed my arm and pulled me back, regaining my consciousness at that moment.

Everyone looked at me surprised to see smoke coming out of my shoulders as if I was burning. The last thing I remember from that time was waking up in the hospital with a huge mental gap in my mind, with the feeling that something was in me and that I was connected to Augusto in a supernatural way.

¡Vaya relato! Saludos.
