I believe in Spinoza's God, who reveals to us a harmony of all living beings. I do not believe in a God who deals with the destiny and actions of human beings.

THE EMERALD JEWEL

People piled up in the center of the street, arriving like flies to a piece of meat after hearing the loud and strident noise. A child, pulled by his mother, kept pointing at the agglomeration. The people from the park were astonished to see the smoke rising. The voices did not stop and the noise of some cars corrupted the silence of the center. Photographs were taken and videos were recorded from cell phones. The authorities and the paramedic corps arrived, quickly pushed the crowd aside as they did their job. When they saw what was happening, they were surprised, they thought it had been another regular accident in the city.

Before them stood a winged creature, shaped like a man with a muscular body. His skin was gray and his eyes were red; a rather peculiar color. He had long claw-like nails, and brown hair covered his legs like pants. Its lepidopterous wings were huge, and dark like those of a moth. The officers and paramedics didn't know what to do, but they had received orders to take the victim to a medical facility, and so they did.

People kept taking pictures and filming as the creature was taken away. The paramedics analyzed the body and noticed that his blood pressure was low. They could not say anything about its vision, as it was different from that of the human eye. His skin was as hard as stone, and traditional needles could not penetrate it.

-It looks like we're losing him! We must do something fast! -shouted a female paramedic named Castañeda.

-We can't give him an IV! -And if we do, we don't know if he will react well to the medication.

Castañeda took a knife out of his pocket and, with force, cut open the skin of the creature, leaving an injury. When he saw red blood gushing out, he felt a kind of relief.

-It's red! -he called out, "it means it's hemoglobin.

He took a syringe and injected the medicine right where he made the wound. The ambulance car was speeding towards the medical center. The paramedics did not stop analyzing the creature in the meantime, until they were relieved to find that his pressure had equalized.

The creature, for an instant, opened its eyes and stared into the brown eyes of paramedic Castañeda. They stared at each other for a long time until they reached the medical center. There, a group of doctors and assistants were anxiously waiting for them. When they saw the creature, they were stunned, but they had to continue with the orders they had been given. They frantically carried the stranger into the medical center. Castañeda accompanied him during the journey, even though he knew he had no business being there, however, the others did not notice his presence, as they were still stunned by the marvel in front of them.

They took him to a special room where access was restricted. Castañeda waited outside the room to see if he could get any news about the creature. After a while, Garcia appeared.

-Castañeda, what are you doing? We must go, we have done our work here.

-You go on..." said the paramedic, "I'll stay here until I hear news about the baby.

-Are you crazy? They'll give you a wake-up call if you do.

-They won't even notice I'll be here all afternoon. -Don't you understand, Garcia? This is so big. I don't know what it is or where that creature came from, but I'd like to find out. He finishes his words by clutching his hands to his chest.

-All right, do what you want. García walks away and Castañeda does not pay the slightest attention to him. He stayed in that hallway waiting for hours, until he saw the chief physician of the department leave the room.

-We must get it ready before "they" arrive. The man demanded as Castañeda listened closely. She pondered for a moment: Who will come for him? The government? A secret service? Where will they take him?

Castañeda needed to see the creature once, so she went into one of the rooms of the medical center, grabbed a white coat and then entered the room where he was. He walked down a huge hallway until he came to a glass case where he caught a glimpse of the creature, which was connected to tubes, its wings immobilized and its arms full of wounds from several IVs.

In her heart she felt that he was suffering so she decided to help him. She used her cunning to trick the nurse on duty and the nurse allowed her access to the small room where the creature was confined. Again she looked into his eyes, although they were closed. She placed her hand on his chest and instantly he awoke. He looked into her eyes again, this time with more intensity. Castañeda could not stop looking at those red eyes, but something had to be done, for apparently the creature was suffering. She began to disconnect him from the machines to help him, and when she was about to finish, a group of officers and doctors arrived to stop her.

-Hey, what are you doing? -the chief doctor shouted. As the officers approached to seize it, the creature rose from the stretcher and spread its huge wings, then let out a deafening scream. The officers were stunned and backed up several steps. The creature grabbed Castañeda and then soared into the air through the roof.

They flew over the city, Castañeda could not believe what was happening. She clung tightly to the creature's body as she looked down in fear. Everyone watched her escape, while the chief doctor burned with rage. Castañeda was afraid, but she felt safe at the same time, she knew she had to protect the creature no matter what.
