«To do all possible good, to love freedom above all things and, even if it were for a throne, never to betray the truth».

Me negaba.

—No entiendo…

Me arrodillé.

THE RESURRECTION OF ROSEMARY

Love is so strange, there are things we cannot assimilate from it with our senses. I was tied to an alternate reality, produced by my most tenuous absurd fears. Previously I only heard her name once: "Rosemary", and I shuddered, I faded with all the fear and pain it contained. To lose her that catastrophic day, where the night mocked me with its sighs, and dragged to my door a terrible news: "Rosemary died in an accident".

I didn't believe it. I was in denial. I spat blasphemies toward an omnipotent God who allowed injustices in this worldly life. I wished it was my body that was wrecked in that car; a thousand times, than that Rosemary would even suffer. But as I blinked and without realizing it, she lay on the coffin covered with gardenias because they were her favorite and the letters of our memories. A shadow covered me that day like a coat, and the darkness; though it was somewhat distant, left me with nothing but passionate images of me and my late wife.

I fell back into a lethargy again; like a mental lacuna, and now I lay in my bed hugging Rosemary's pillow still wearing my funeral clothes. I don't know how many hours had passed since she was buried, or if I was under the effects of alcohol or any medication, I only knew that the pain did not diminish and that these lapses of time made me feel more and more confused.

The next morning, while I was still feeling defeated, my front door rang insistently and I rushed to open it. As I did so, I was surprised to see in front of me Rosemary's entire family, all elegantly dressed in chromatic blue cloth, interesting diamond-shaped jewelry around their necks and a kind of staff carried by my late wife's father.

-Come with us, Ramón. -Said his mother, Fatima, in a serious tone, looking me straight in the eyes. I thought it was another farewell rite, but the way they were dressed confused me.

-I don't understand... -I answered, there was something in those words that caused me a slight astonishment.

-From seeing your wife, of course. Her accident was not planned by life, so her death should not have happened. -Said his brother; Octavio, with a more affable sound in his words that made me even more confused.

-Come with us and you will see. -He extended his hand to me and, without saying any more words, took me with them even though I was still stunned.

We walked towards the cemetery, the sunlight was so bright that it seemed impossible at this time of the year. I was bewildered, my soul and my body were in discord. My soul did not want to go to that place, where the remains of my buried wife lay. On the other hand, my body did want to go there, I longed to meet Rosemary face to face; if the hopes they were giving me were true.

Finally we arrived, the place was completely desolate, very unusual in spite of being a funeral. We stood in front of Rosemary's tomb, I watched them all with great curiosity, as they remained inert as if waiting for an extraordinary event to happen, and amazingly it did.

The sky changed color; it turned a nocturnal lilac that seemed rather frightening. I thought I had been drugged, so bleary-eyed, I stepped back. I dropped to my knees. I made an X with my arms. I suffered a panic attack which restrained my will to breathe. I cried out for help but no one was paying attention to me, everyone was transfixed watching the scarlet fire gushing like a fountain from Rosemary's grave.

Slowly, the urge to breathe settled in my body, and a spectral figure was revealed in the background of the flames. It was the female silhouette of a shadow, which slowly took on contours and textures in its form. I saw her face and it was my wife's; surprised and wanting to vomit, I glimpsed how her eyes gave off a blue glow, which rested on me at all times.

Now I do not see reality as it was before, now I only see it as a mirror; that shows me what I want to see but not what it hides in its depths. Rosemary returned to my side, however, something about her, feels too unusual.
