E S P A Ñ O L

E N G L I S H

When we talk about music from the 90s, many bands come to mind; such as Tool, Placebo, The Cranberries, Korn, Nine Inch Nails, and Evanescence, among others, but none so particular that left me with my eyes wide open as Marilyn Manson.

Founded in 1989 by vocalist Brian Hugh Warne, who uses the name of his band as his stage name, this industrial metal group caused a stir in the 90s, for its eccentric, exaggerated, and disturbing style, with which its vocalist and leader, sought to shock people and draw attention to their good music and excellent strident sounds, led by one of the five best voices in metal.

Marilyn Manson was considered a living work, as his striking style, clearly inspired by the fantastic and unique musician David Bowie, positioned him as one of the most emblematic figures in pop culture. His creativity and eccentrics led him to his music videos, which I saw as a child at a time when I could not stand the terrifying, but still, I felt sympathy for his music, for his weird and strident sounds, which I thought were great.

The videos that shocked me the most as a child were those of the albums Antichrist Superstar (1996) and Mechanical Animals (1998), where the best of his music lies in my opinion, and today, before you, I present the music videos that most shocked me of Marilyn Manson.

1.- The Beautiful People (1996)

We start with this cinematic piece where the unusual, but the intriguing style of this artist stands out. The video for The Beautiful People was directed by Floria Sigismondi and the makeup was done by Pamela Neal, who was also in charge of all the aesthetic effects of the artist.

This video for its theme and the weird things that we are going to find caused me panic; it's like watching a short horror video, but with music; very good and boisterous music. The lyrics seem like a call to protest, probably to religion; Marylin Manson was always known for challenging the church and going against it, one of the things I liked most about him.

With all those elements, and the critical message he makes against one of the most powerful institutions in the world, I was just a kid and didn't understand, it just scared the hell out of me; besides his songs are in English, but now The Beautiful People qualifies as one of my favorite songs of his.

2.- Tourniquet (1996)

Tanto The Beautiful People como Tourniquet, pertenecen al mismo disco: Antichrist Superstar (1996).

The following music video, follows with that same sequence and disturbing artwork, as it comes from the same album. It was also directed by director Floria Sigismondi, following the same sequence as its predecessor. The makeup was also composed by Pamela Neal, who seems to have been inspired by the movie Evil Dead; a great piece of art.

This video also caused me a lot of fear, as here we will see a perverted and depraved Marylin Manson sharing with some strange creatures. The lyrics go along with the disturbing nature of the video, as it reminds you of romance combined with unusual and vomitous experiments. I like the video and the song a lot, but when I watched it as a kid with my older brother; and at night, it was like watching The Exorcist.

Both The Beautiful People and Tourniquet, belong to the same album: Antichrist Superstar (1996).

3.- I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me) (1998)

Now we leave Antichrist Superstar, to get into the lyrics of social criticism and satire of Mechanical Animals (1998), their next album for this time. During this video, we can see how the style changes, no longer dark and dirty, but still eccentric and disturbing.

Inspired by the Glam, style that was very popular in the 70s and 80s, Mechanical Animals was created as a tribute to the song Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie, where we will find a similar style and story, but this time created by Manson himself.

This new character seems to be a kind of transgender alien with excessively white skin and red eyes, which is captured by corporate owners of the music industry to turn him into the next world rock star. All this I'm telling you I learned later, because, at that time, I was scared just to see Marylin Manson on the screen, and now with this new character that is equally terrifying.

I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me) is a song with very strong protest lyrics, it has satire and when you find the sense, you will also find a lot of humor. The video is very good, one of the best of the album, from time to time I watch it to relax, something I would never have imagined when I was younger.

4.- The Dope Show (1998)

Also from Mechanical Animals, this video tells the main story of the album. It was directed by Paul Hunter with Marylin Manson as co-director, (I forgot to mention that the video for the previous song, was also directed by Hunter).

I remember when I saw this video for the first time, I didn't know whether to feel fear or disgust, because I liked the music, but there was something that didn't fit. Here appears the same character, admired and adored by all, looking at you with those disturbing red eyes. The way I was introduced to Marylin Manson's music may not have been the best, but it was quite effective. Industrial metal is a genre that I didn't like very much, however, I started to love it, as I have always been a lover of strident and creative sounds in music.

I can listen to any kind of music, but when it's something that hooks me, I listen to it all day long. I was too scared as a kid, but when you start to grow up, things change.

Conclusions

If you have heard and know this artist, you will know what I am talking about. I knew him as a child; at a time when I didn't even have a fascination for eccentric art and horror. Since it's music in English, I didn't understand what he was referring to in his lyrics. Many people said they were songs that invoked the devil, but industrial metal and other metal genres have always been characterized by protest lyrics in their songs, and Marylin Manson, as eccentric and satanic as he may be, is no exception to this rule.

I hope you liked my selection of videos of this artist that disturbed me the most as a child. There are others, of course, but I don't remember them shocking me as much as these four videos. It was a disturbing, but enriching experience, which effectively complemented my musical tastes.
