—¿Ahora? —Inquirí confundido.

—No, mañana temprano.

Tragué saliva y volví a mi pregunta anterior.

—¿Dónde está el profesor Monsalve? No me has respondido.

The devil is optimistic if he thinks he can make man more evil.

— Karl Kraus

Imagen3.png

Professor Monsalve was nervous; he paced back and forth in his library space. He was scratching his bald head trying to understand some writings in his hand. He looked confused, in fact; his demeanor was like that of a demented man paraphrasing uncertain words for solitude.

I approached him to tell him that I was leaving, as my work day was over. I had worked for several years as his assistant and had never seen him like this. I spoke to him several times, but he didn't seem to hear me; it was as if he was in a hypnotic trance. I had to reach over and shake his shoulder a little; only then did he react.

-Christian! -He snorted in a panicked tone. Sorry, did you say something?

-Yes, I was saying that I'm going home, are you all right? -I asked.

Professor Monsalve turned to his armchair and sat down to rest. His face was pale and he seemed short of breath.

-Do you need me to get you anything? -I insisted, but he seemed gone; out of this reality.

-Boy, I need you to walk me somewhere.

-Now? -I asked confused.

-No, tomorrow morning. I know you have commitments, I'm not going to force you to work overtime. Tomorrow I want you to come before 8:00 a.m. so we can get out of this uncertainty.

I stared at him with curiosity.

-Professor, what's wrong?

-Nothing, don't worry Christian, tomorrow I will explain everything in detail.

Imagen4.png

The next day, I still had my curiosity, but a little more powerful. I arrived half an hour before the scheduled time, the professor arrived ten minutes later; my anxiety tripled because of what he was going to tell me.

On the way, Professor Monsalve told me about the strange intelligence of a boy, who was the one we were going to visit. His name was Daniel Carrasco, and at only twelve years of age, he has impressed scholars and academics with his enigmatic essays on philosophy and science.

The day before, Professor Monsalve had turned pale because this boy had solved the enigma of his Theory of Conspiracies, performing an antithesis that left the old man with his eyes wide open. We all know the fragile ego that Professor Monsalve boasts, and upon learning about this and the ridicule he has received for it, I could feel his personality cracking.

Little did we know about Daniel, other than that he was a gifted pre-teen with intelligence beyond that of an academic. His parents say that since he was a child he spent his time locked in the library at home. Daniel's mother, Rosaura Carrasco, was a quantum physicist, while his father, Nicolas, was a psychologist; both minds in the world of science.

When we arrived at the Carrasco's house, I felt the professor shiver for an instant; I don't know if it was because of the cold environment, but I saw him insane, as if he was facing his worst demons. We knocked on the door and Mr. Carrasco answered us, then invited us into the living room.

There was Daniel, sitting on one of the sofas. He glared at us with a cold stare and a smile on his lips. Physically he didn't seem to be anything special, he was a thin boy; he looked taller than his age. He wore dark, thin, unwrinkled clothes. His oval face and brown eyes flashed a noticeable sapience combined with serenity. His way of sitting caught my attention, for his bearing gave off a pretentious personality.

I felt like saying something in Professor Monsalve's ear, but I decided to keep it to myself.

-Welcome! -said Daniel in greeting. Professor Monsalve seemed calm, as if all his fears were dissipating. -My father will bring you some drinks, please make yourselves comfortable.

We sat down on the long sofa and immediately Mr. Carrasco arrived with some glasses of iced tea.

-Thank you! -We exclaimed in unison.

-Daniel, it's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Professor Carrasco.

-I know who you are, I also know who your assistant is," he spat with a smug tone, "Why don't we leave the formalities aside and start with the subject that has brought you here? I know you have things to do, I don't want to waste your time.

I grimaced at the boy's attitude.

-That's fine with me," the professor replied, "I can see you're being very direct.

-The chances of this meeting happening again are nil," the boy explained, twirling a ring on his finger, "Do you know why I wrote that antithesis that completely demolishes your theory?

The professor shook his head.

-I wanted to call your attention. Your ego, Professor Monsalve, is very famous even outside the academic fields, and I know that you like to debate a lot, so I said to myself: why not? But first I would like to show you something in the library, would you like to come in? But only you.

The professor looked at me and made a calm gesture, then got up from his seat and accompanied Daniel to the library. Mr. Carrasco left the room with the excuse of looking for some snacks, but almost half an hour passed and he never returned.

I was perplexed by Daniel's personality, his childlike appearance was completely overshadowed by his personality as an enlightened man. He was defiant, boastful and somewhat perverse; for he gave off a feeling predisposed to make others uncomfortable. His energy was like a dark mist that made you shudder just by being in his presence, and his words were as lacerating as cauterizing knives.

Imagen4.png

Time was stretching out and I wanted to leave. I was bored and a bit sleepy; besides there was nothing to entertain me. I decided to go to the library to listen to what the professor and Daniel were saying. I looked out of the corner of my eye through the half-open side of the door and only caught a glimpse of the boy sitting in a chair staring at me.

-Come in, Christian, come in," he said, I froze for a moment and finally did as he asked.

-And Professor Monsalve? -I asked him, I looked at his eyes and noticed how dark and deep they had become.

-Do you know how to shoot a gun, Christian? -He asked, leaving me speechless. I answered, shaking my head.

-My grandfather was an expert hunter, he taught everything he knows to my father and he tried to pass that knowledge to me, but I was never very good with firearms, I prefer other kind of... artifacts.

I swallowed saliva and went back to my previous question.

-Where is Professor Monsalve? You haven't answered me.

He, with a despot attitude, took a long time to answer me, then he looked at me with his cloudy eyes that made me panic.

-My mother is one of the most brilliant minds I have ever known," he continued, evading my question again, "I love her very much, but she never understood me. My father has always understood my way of seeing the world, you know what I mean? You always have that someone with whom to create that strong interactive bond that cannot be broken even with the moral, ethical and constructive beliefs that society imposes on us.

-That's enough! -I demanded, "Tell me now where Professor Monsalve is or I will go out and call the police!

He grinned from ear to ear and pointed to the other end of the room where there was a door.

-It's there," he said calmly. I sighed a little frightened. I approached slowly shouting the professor's name, but no one answered me. I opened the door slowly, trembling because of the creaking sound it made, and when it was completely open, I saw two bodies lying on the floor with their entrails open: one was a woman's and the other was the professor's. I was petrified, when I saw that I was petrified.

I was petrified, when suddenly, a huge shadow covered me from behind, I turned immediately and saw Mr. Carrasco with a knife in his hands. On impulse, I kicked him in the stomach and knocked him to the ground, I ran past him where he had the opportunity to stab my calf.

I fell, but got up immediately struggling to get to the living room. All that could be heard in the surroundings was Daniel's malevolent laughter as his father crawled to catch up with me.

-Run, Christian, run! -shouted the little bastard mocking me. Mr. Carrasco tried to hurt me several times, but I was quicker and kicked him in the crotch that left him immobile, then I took advantage and hit him with a vase that was nearby.

With my adrenaline pumping, I made it to the door and out of that hellish house. As I ran towards the street with the feeling that I was already safe, two arrows stuck in my lower back. I looked back and glimpsed Daniel carrying a bow and another arrow with it sealed my chest and made me faint.

Imagen4.png

I woke up in a hospital room. I did not understand what was happening and, on impulse of fright, I tried to get up, but my legs, arms and waist did not react. At that moment I panicked, because I deduced that I had been paralyzed.

Suddenly, the door of the room opened and Daniel, his father and an unknown nurse with blisters on her hands came in. I wanted to scream, but I was completely intubated and immobile; I was at the mercy of these psychopaths.

-Don't worry, Christian," Daniel murmured, pulling his face close, "We'll help you. Soon you will be part of us. Just take a deep breath and relax. That was the last thing he said to me while the nurse injected a solution in my neck, and at that moment, all the lights went out.

THE END

This story is absolutely riveting! That young man is a devil child! You are very good at writing horror, @universoperdido.

The story is nearly flawless! But I noticed something you could correct:

I was petrified, when I saw that I was petrified.

I was petrified, when suddenly, a huge shadow covered me from behind...

Wow, what a great story. I don't often have time to read stories outside of The Ink Well, but I came across this one and it pulled me in. (Of course there is one scene that is too graphic for The Ink Well, so thank you for posting it in another community!)

Do you write for publications, @universoperdido? Or only on Hive?

Hi @Jayna

I am so honored that you liked this story I posted days ago. It was really amazing to see your comment. Thanks also for the comment, I will try to correct it.

Regarding your question, at the moment I only publish for Hive, I still haven't found another trusted site to place my writings or sell them, I haven't thought about it the truth.
