«I believe in resisting: this has been my motto. But today, how many times have I asked myself how to embody this word».

E N G L I S H

A STORY BEFORE DYING

During the hours of my last night, a stranger approached me, placing himself at the side of my dismal bed. His face was shrouded in deep darkness, and the sounds of his words were unintelligible whispers to my ears. He bent down to sit beside me, I felt his eyes; though imperceptible, boring into my face with a stern indifference.

The man said no more and I thought he expected me to reciprocate. My last hours were somewhat silent with him, the candles were extinguished and the shadows lay down with me. The moonlight slowly disappeared and only faint glimmers of it remained, which remained to be witnesses of my already announced end. I looked at that man, although I could not discern his face, and I called him demon or angel because that was what he was transmitting to me.

—Oh sir, please have pity on my torment! —The man did not even flinch.

—Tell me who you are, I beg you! Is it an angel or a demon who has come to take me with you? I don't have much life left and you know that, and your silence increases my agony and fear.

As if nothing, the man remained still without saying a word, he looked like a statue covered in darkness; voiceless and faceless. I tried again to get him to speak to me, so I sacrificed what was left of my sanity.

—Please, sir, if you only want to accompany me without speaking to me, I respect that, but I ask you to give me that book that is in the drawer in that corner; yes, the one I am pointing to. In those pages there is a story that I would like to read before I die.

—If you want, I can read it for you. —The mysterious stranger spat, while my eyes slowly opened to their limit: surprised. After a few seconds I nodded, and he calmly went to get me the book I asked for. I indicated the pages to point to where the story began. He settled in, bending his legs as a highborn gentleman would. He caressed the letters with such gentleness, as if they were the skin of a lover. The sound of the clock hanging on the wall, broke the silence every time the gloom took over the place, until my companion; with a clear and deep voice, began to tell me the story I asked for.

It was a beautiful story, my father used to tell it to me before going to sleep. It was about a young prince addicted to adventures, the boy was locked in a tower by orders of his uncle; a witch king. The prince lived in dissatisfaction with all the sumptuous materials around him, with no freedom at all.

One day, a fairy of the misty woods who was passing by, saw him very sad perched at the foot of his window, was moved by him and went to see what was happening to him. The prince, surprised, saw that shining fairy and his heart gave out a flash of joy. The magical creature, after finding out what was wrong, granted him a wish, and as expected, the prince asked to leave.

Once outside the tower, he thanked the fairy and took the first horse he could find to escape from his uncle's kingdom. He got to know the arid deserts and the heart of its oases. He explored beautiful forests, the darkness of its swamps and the opacity of its marshes. He slept in empty caves. He ran with other animals of the savannahs. He lived in various villages and kingdoms until he could know half the world.

In time, the landless prince grew old, he had become quite a big man. One day, he decided to return to his uncle's kingdom, but upon seeing it, his heart was devastated, for ruin and agony had fallen upon the place. Beggars were begging for alms everywhere. The monasteries were crowded with people and new friars. Filth was out of control and pests were rampant on the streets, street corners and empty stores.

The prince, seeing so much pain, decided to go to the castle to confront his uncle, but instead found an ornate corpse on a glass coffin. The prince regretted not staying, but took a sword and held it up as a symbol of hope.

At this part of the story, my companion paused, for he motioned that it was time.

—Please, sir, finish the story, there are only a few words left! —I begged him just once.

And the mysterious man, as he had nothing to lose, read the last paragraphs which were summarized in this way: The prince took control of the kingdom, the fairy who had helped him escape, brought as company other fairies from the forests. With their magic, they managed to drive away the misery of the place. The kingdom became radiant with more lively and lively people. The prince got a beautiful wife and everyone lived happily ever after.

—I wish I had one of those magic wands. —I sputtered in a whispery, dying voice.

As I slowly closed my eyes to sleep forever, I saw my companion's back sprout outstretched wings. He covered me with them, and that's how everything turned into darkness.
