INFINITY POOL (2023) The power of doing what you want
How would you define a film full of elements that are difficult to conceptualize at first glance? Infinity Pool caused that problem in my brain at first; drilling it hard with ideas about scenes and characters. Before watching a film of this category, we begin to wonder: how can evil be portrayed; does evil exist in human beings or is it a concept invented by us to explain our true selves, which is inherent?
As we go along we can ask more questions, but our minds would atrophy and we would be left in a role of confusion as on a vertiginous floor. Terror in cinema, and the different expressions of art, have had a constant evolution. It is no longer about screams, jumpscares, surprises, etc., it is about provoking tension, hypnotizing, suspending, and, finally, the blow of impact.
Without further ado, here I leave before you my review of this film with strong sightings.
¿Cómo definirías una película repleta de elementos que son difíciles de conceptualizar a simple vista? Infinity Pool causó ese problema en mi cerebro al principio; taladrándolo fuertemente con ideas sobre las escenas y los personajes. Antes de ver un filme de esta categoría, comenzamos a preguntarnos: ¿Cómo se puede representar el mal? ¿Existe en realidad el mal en el ser humano o es un concepto inventado por nosotros para explicar nuestro verdadero ser, el cual es inherente en la naturaleza?
A medida que vayamos avanzando podemos formular más preguntas, pero nuestra mente se atrofiaría y quedaría en un papel de confusión como en un piso vertiginoso. El terror en el cine, y en las diferentes expresiones del arte, ha tenido una evolución constante. Ya no se trata de gritos, jumpscares, sorpresas inesperadas, etc., se trata de provocar tensión, hipnotizar, suspender y, por último, el golpe de impacto.
Sin más preámbulos, aquí dejo ante ustedes mi reseña sobre esta película con fuertes avistamientos.

Infinity Pool is a horror/sci-fi film directed and written by Brandon Cronenberg, a director already quite popular, especially for his previous masterpiece called Possessor (which, by the way, can be found on HBO Max). This film starred Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth, along with Cleopatra Coleman, Amanda Brugel, Jalil Lespert, John Ralston, Caroline Boulton, and Jeff Ricketts.
This is a co-production between Canada, Croatia, and Hungary, with the work of production companies Elevation Pictures, Film Forge Productions, 4 Film, and Hero Squared, among others. It was distributed by Neon Company and grossed $4,332,078 since its release.
From the first few minutes, the film already begins to tell us that something is not right, as it starts with an incipient dialogue that leaves us pensive. James and Em Foster are a couple enjoying their vacation in a resort located in a strange country with particularly disturbing laws, but with beautiful beaches and landscapes that make it a paradisiacal place.
James is a novelist who hasn't published a new book in six years, so Em tries to help him by taking him to this beautiful place to find inspiration. Right off the bat, we can see that the couple's marital problems are very strong and they can't hide them; giving us to understand that their relationship no longer makes sense.
At the resort, James and Em meet Gabi and Alban; two tourists who are also staying at the same place. Gabi claims to know James from his latest novel and declares herself an admirer of his work; it is from this comment, that James' interest in the couple; especially Gabi, begins to grow.
This part of the movie reminded me a bit of the plot of Speak No Evil; where there is also a couple that meets another couple during their vacations, but it only reminds me of that detail, since the levels of comparison of both movies are abysmal from end to end.

Este filme fue protagonizado por Alexander Skarsgård y Mia Goth, junto con Cleopatra Coleman, Amanda Brugel, Jalil Lespert, John Ralston, Caroline Boulton y Jeff Ricketts.

A partir de los primeros minutos, la película ya comienza a decirnos que algo no está bien, pues empieza con un incipiente diálogo que nos deja pensativos. James y Em Foster son una pareja que disfrutan sus vacaciones en un resort ubicado en un país extraño con leyes particularmente perturbadoras, pero con hermosas playas y paisajes que hacen del sitio un lugar paradisiaco para turistear.
James es un novelista que no ha publicado un nuevo libro en seis años, por lo que Em trata de ayudarlo llevándolo a este hermoso sitio para que encuentre inspiración. De entrada, podemos ver que los problemas maritales de la pareja son muy fuertes y no los pueden ocultar; dándonos a entender que su relación ya no tiene sentido.
En el resort, James y Em conocen a Gabi y a Alban; dos turistas que también están hospedados en el mismo lugar. Gabi dice conocer a James por su última novela y se declara admiradora de su trabajo; es a partir de este comentario, que el interés de James por la pareja; especialmente por Gabi, comienza a crecer.
Esta parte de la película me hizo acordar un poco a la trama de Speak No Evil; donde también hay una pareja que conoce a otra durante sus vacaciones, pero solo me hace recordar por ese detalle, ya que los niveles de comparación de ambas películas son de extremo a extremo abismales.
On their way back to an outing with Gabi and Alban, James and Em get into a tremendous mess when James runs over a local native. The boy dies and his body is left in the middle of the isolated road. The next day, the couple is arrested by the local police and James is sentenced to death, however, they give him a chance to save himself by paying a certain amount of money, so that the government of that country creates an anatomically and biologically identical double of him to receive the punishment.
It is here that the fun begins, and the most salient elements of the film begin to flow spontaneously. **Infinity Pool is another social satire of how the rich get away with evading the law, taking advantage of poor countries, and turning them into their 'playground'. It is also a critique of the corruption of governments, who receive money from these billionaires to do whatever they want with the environment.
I found the whole thing quite intriguing, funny, and exciting. I love these types of movies with insane and deranged characters, with crazy ideas and misdeeds that they enjoy for our entertainment. The moment James meets others like him; with doppelgangers who were also executed for committing a terrible crime, he begins to be part of a creepy, but fun lurid game where they slip the law under their feet.
This is not the typical horror film that will scare you with jumpscares; the most it will do is disturb you and leave you intrigued. Between its sometimes mind-blowing photography and background music that will make your tension rise, you are going to feel uncomfortable with the strong scenes you will see in this film. I enjoyed every second and didn't want to be interrupted while watching it. The ascendancy of the madness became more and more powerful, leaving a hook in my heart.
De regreso a una salida con Gabi y Alban, James y Em se meten en un lío tremendo cuando James atropella a un nativo del lugar. El chico termina muriendo y su cadáver dejado en medio de esa aislada carretera. Al día siguiente, la pareja es detenida por la policía del lugar y James es sentenciado a muerte, sin embargo, le dan la oportunidad de salvarse pagando una cierta cantidad de dinero, para que el gobierno de ese país cree un doble anatómica y biológicamente idéntico a él para que reciba el castigo.
Es aquí donde la diversión comienza, y los elementos más resaltantes de la película empiezan a fluir espontáneamente. Infinity Pool es claramente otra sátira social de como los ricos salen ilesos, evadiendo la ley, aprovechándose de los países pobres y convirtiéndolos en su ‘campo de juego’. También es una crítica a la corrupción de los gobiernos, que reciben dinero de estos multimillonarios para que hagan lo que quieran con el entorno.
Todo me pareció bastante intrigante, divertido y emocionante. Me encantan este tipo de películas con personajes dementes y desquiciados, con ideas locas y fechorías que disfrutan para nuestro entretenimiento. En el momento en que James conoce a otros como él; con dobles que también fueron ejecutados por haber cometido un terrible crimen, comienza a ser parte de un espeluznante, pero divertido juego escabroso donde se pasan la ley por debajo de los pies.
Esta no es la típica película de terror que te asustará con jumpscares; lo máximo que hará será perturbarte y dejarte intrigado. Entre su fotografía a veces alucinante y una música de fondo que hará elevar tu tensión, vas a sentirte incómodo con las fuertes escenas que verás en este filme. Yo disfruté cada segundo y no quería que me interrumpieran mientras la veía. La ascendencia de la locura se hacía cada vez más potente, dejando un gancho en mi corazón.
The characters and the occult symbolism are highlighted in every scene which will leave you with your eyes wide open. I loved Mia Goth's performance, of course; she truly has well earned the title of the queen of horror. I'm looking forward to Maxxxine, and seeing her performance in this film, which according to reviews will be iconic.
Another element that we can analyze in this film is the way it exposes the dark side of human nature; that dirty, abhorrent, perverse, wretched, and scatological side that we don't want to cross, but it is there inside of us; for it only wants to satisfy the deepest and most twisted longings of our subconscious. Philosophically, it all seems so well structured, and we are dumbfounded to see our true faces in a movie.
I could also find another factor introduced in the film that is quite interesting, and that is "The Allegory of Mother and Child". James is a failed writer who has no money; all the capital he owns is thanks to Em supporting him, as his father owns a famous publishing house that helped James to publish his first novel, which was not very successful and that made James lose the motivation to write and settle for being supported by his wife.
This is the typical case of the 'sheltered child'; which is about a grown man who has not fully grown up and seeks the skirt of his mother or any woman who plays the role of a mother to protect him and cover all his needs. That's why Gabi crosses paths with James; because she sees this inherent factor in his personality as something fun, but at the same time she wants to help him become a man.
Los personajes y el simbolismo ocultista, quedan remarcados en cada escena que te dejará con los ojos bien abiertos. Amé la actuación de Mia Goth, por supuesto; de verdad que tiene bien ganado el título de la reina del terror. Estoy esperando con ansias Maxxxine, y ver su interpretación en esta película, que según las críticas será icónica.
Otro elemento que podemos analizar en este filme, es la manera como expone el lado oscuro de la naturaleza humana; ese lado sucio, aborrecible, perverso, mísero y escatológico con el que no nos queremos cruzar, pero está allí dentro de nosotros; pues solo desea satisfacer los anhelos más profundos y retorcidos de nuestro subconsciente. Filosóficamente, todo parece tan bien estructurado, y nos quedamos boquiabiertos al ver nuestras verdaderas caras en una película.
También pude encontrar otro factor introducido en la película que es bastante interesante; y es el de “La Alegoría de la Madre y el Hijo”. James es un escritor fracasado que no tiene dinero; todo el capital posee es gracias a que Em lo mantiene, pues su padre es dueño de una famosa editorial que ayudó a James a publicar su primera novela, la cual no tuvo mucho éxito y eso hizo que James perdiera la motivación por escribir y conformarse por ser un mantenido por su esposa.
Este es el típico caso del ‘niño protegido’; el cual trata de un hombre adulto que no ha crecido del todo y busca la falda de su madre o de cualquier mujer que haga rol de mamá para que lo proteja y cubra todas sus necesidades. Es por eso que Gabi se cruza con James; porque ve este factor inherente en su personalidad como algo divertido, pero a la vez quiere ayudarlo a convertirlo en un hombre.
Em was only feeding James' 'sheltered child' complex, by just reducing him into a puny being who doesn't have the guts to face life, Gabi, on the other hand, wanted to set him free. She had become his new mom; but a mom who wanted her grown son to become a man and stand on his own two feet.
The film has quite a lot to analyze, with a series of elements that go hand in hand consistently as we watch each scene in detail until its last act, which is where all the doubts will flow and we begin to make an exhaustive analysis. I enjoyed it quite a lot and I didn't find it boring at all, in fact, I still carry in my mind all those psychedelic colors of several scenes. It would be a sin to see Infinity Pool from only one perspective; as well as illogical and, besides, it wouldn't make any sense at all.
Em solo alimentaba el complejo de ‘niño protegido’ de James, al solo reducirlo en un insignificante ser que no tiene las agallas para afrontar la vida, en cambio, Gabi, quería liberarlo. Ella se había convertido en su nueva mamá; pero una mamá que quiere que su hijo ya adulto se convierta en un hombre y pueda valerse por sí mismo.
La película tiene bastante por analizar, con una serie de elementos que van de la mano consecuentemente a medida que vemos cada escena con detalle hasta su último acto, que es donde todas las dudas fluirán y empezamos a hacer análisis exhaustivos. La he disfrutado bastante y no me pareció para nada aburrida, de hecho, todavía llevo en mi mente todos esos colores psicodélicos de varias escenas. Sería un pecado ver Infinity Pool desde una sola perspectiva; al igual que ilógico y, además, no tendría nada de sentido.

Hace poco lei una reseña sobre esta película y realmente se ve tenebrosa, y me refiero a tenebrosa en el mismo sentido que explicaste, esa parte malvada y perversa que esta escondida muy en el fondo de todo ser humano, creo que eso es lo que más miedo da hoy en día y sobretodo esa parte que dices sobre los ricos que pasan por encima de la ley solo porque tienen dinero, he visto muchos casos y la verdad eso si es terrorífico, me gusto mucho tu forma de explicarte en la reseña, pude entender mucho más fácil de que se trata esta película, excelente porque me causo mucha curiosidad por verla. Algo que me agrada de las películas es pensar en ellas aun después de haberlas visto, es decir, seguir analizando y construyendo los hechos en mi cerebro luego de algunas horas, esa sensación me gusta y me hace sentir que el filme logró su objetivo, así parece ser esta, la cual disfrutaste bastante, buena recomendación.

Wow your review of this film is really captivating! I have seen reviews of this movie but have never really given it any thought. I just watched the trailer you put up and I am convinced that I have to see this film. It's been a while since I saw Alexander Skarsgard in a movie.
This is a pretty good and enjoyable film. It will cause you tension and many strange feelings, and in the end you will either love it or be more disturbed. Greetings and thanks for reading me.

Sin duda alguna el motivo principal para verla es ver una actuación más de mí quería Mía Goth, reina del terror, pues su performance en X y Pearl me ha dejado con ganas de cada vez más, y como mencionas, yo también estoy ansioso por ver Maxxxine, y mientras esperamos, tocó ver esta posible joya con dos protagónicos estelares.
