Entrepreneurship in Cuba: between what I want and what I have to do
I’m not going to talk to you from a manual or from a pretty theory.
I’m speaking from what it feels like to wake up in a country like Cuba and realize that, even if you have ideas, first you have to solve life.
And that’s where everything changes.
Starting was not inspiration
If I’m honest, I didn’t start thinking about entrepreneurship because of some big motivation.
It wasn’t a perfect dream or a clear vision of the future.
It was something simpler… and harder.
It was looking around and realizing that daily effort is not always enough.
That work, although necessary, often doesn’t leave space to grow the way you want.
And then that word appears in Cuba that carries a lot of weight: “to invent.”
Necessity doesn’t ask if you’re ready
Here, necessity doesn’t knock on the door gently.
It arrives and stays.
It forces you to think differently, to move, to look for alternatives even when you are tired.
And at that point, you start doing things you didn’t even consider “entrepreneurship” before.
Selling something small.
Helping others with a service.
Learning new skills without having ideal conditions.
Not because it’s easy.
But because there is not much room to stay still.
Between shifts, tiredness, and thoughts
Many ideas are not born at a perfect desk.
They are born in exhaustion, in a long shift, in a silent moment where your mind starts looking for exits.
That’s when you ask yourself:
Am I just surviving, or am I building something?
And the answer is not always clear.
The curious thing: you start out of necessity… and continue out of pride
There is something that is not often said.
At first, you do it because there is no choice.
But later, if you don’t give up, something strange happens:
you start wanting to improve what you do.
To take care of it.
To think about it more deeply.
To feel that even if it was born from necessity, it can become something of your own.
And that’s when motivation starts to appear… almost quietly, almost unexpectedly.
It’s not inspiration, it’s resistance
Entrepreneurship here doesn’t always feel like a dream.
It feels like daily resistance.
Like insisting even when there are no guarantees.
Like trying again even when the result is not immediate.
And that also builds character, even if no one applauds it.
Final reflection
If someone asks me whether we start from motivation or necessity, I don’t have a fancy answer.
I only have this simple truth:
First comes necessity.
Then, if you don’t stop, motivation appears.
And between the two, you build what you can… with what you have.
Because here, we don’t always start with the best scenario.
But we start anyway.

Emprender en Cuba: entre lo que quiero y lo que tengo que hacer
No voy a hablarte desde un manual ni desde una teoría bonita.
Te hablo desde lo que se vive cuando te levantas en un país como Cuba y entiendes que, aunque tengas ideas, primero tienes que resolver la vida.
Y ahí es donde cambia todo.
Empezar no fue una inspiración
Si soy honesto, yo no empecé a pensar en emprender por una gran motivación.
No fue un sueño perfecto ni una visión clara del futuro.
Fue algo más simple… y más duro.
Fue mirar alrededor y darme cuenta de que el esfuerzo diario no siempre alcanza.
Que el trabajo, aunque necesario, muchas veces no deja espacio para crecer como uno quisiera.
Y entonces aparece esa palabra que en Cuba pesa mucho: inventar.
La necesidad no pregunta si estás listo
Aquí la necesidad no toca la puerta suavemente.
Llega y se queda.
Te obliga a pensar diferente, a moverte, a buscar alternativas aunque estés cansado.
Y en ese punto, uno empieza a hacer cosas que antes no consideraba “emprender”.
Vender algo pequeño.
Ayudar a otros con un servicio.
Aprender habilidades nuevas sin tener todas las condiciones ideales.
No porque sea fácil.
Sino porque no hay mucho margen para quedarse quieto.
Entre turnos, cansancio y pensamientos
Muchas de las ideas no nacen en un escritorio perfecto.
Nacen en medio del cansancio, en un turno largo, en un momento de silencio donde la mente empieza a buscar salidas.
Ahí es donde uno se pregunta:
¿Estoy sobreviviendo o estoy construyendo algo?
Y la respuesta no siempre es clara.
Lo curioso: empiezas por necesidad… y sigues por orgullo
Hay algo que no se dice mucho.
Al principio lo haces porque no hay opción.
Pero después, si no te rindes, pasa algo extraño:
empiezas a querer mejorar lo que haces.
A cuidarlo.
A pensarlo mejor.
A sentir que aunque naciera de la necesidad, puede convertirse en algo tuyo.
Y ahí la motivación empieza a aparecer… pero tarde, casi sin avisar.
No es inspiración, es resistencia
Emprender aquí no siempre se siente como un sueño.
Se siente como resistencia diaria.
Como insistir incluso cuando no hay garantías.
Como intentar una vez más aunque el resultado no sea inmediato.
Y eso también forma carácter, aunque nadie lo aplauda.
Si alguien me pregunta si emprendemos por motivación o por necesidad, no tengo una respuesta elegante.
Solo tengo esta verdad simple:
Primero es necesidad.
Después, si no te detienes, aparece la motivación.
Y entre las dos, uno va construyendo lo que puede… con lo que tiene.
Porque aquí no siempre se empieza con el mejor escenario.
Pero se empieza igual.
