From: a horror series that hooked someone who is not a fan of horror
I’ll start by saying something important: I’m not a fan of horror. I never have been. In fact, I usually avoid series that rely only on jump scares to keep your attention. I also don’t like shows that release a season and then leave you waiting years for the next one. It frustrates me to watch an episode, be left with suspense, and not know when the story will continue.
That’s exactly why I decided to start From. I knew it already had several seasons available and that I could watch it without having to wait too long for new episodes.
The series is set in a strange, isolated town. The people who arrive there cannot leave, and they soon realize that mysterious forces are keeping them trapped. Nobody knows exactly what is going on, and each episode slowly reveals information while the characters try to survive and understand the secrets of the place. It’s a constant mystery: no one knows everything, everyone has secrets, and any mistake can be dangerous.
I don’t want to include spoilers because a big part of the show’s magic is discovering what is happening little by little. What I can say is that it is very well constructed. Each episode adds important information, and if you skip one, you will probably miss details that later become essential to understanding the story.
One thing I really liked is that the series doesn’t give you all the answers right away. It slowly reveals clues, keeping the mystery alive. As a viewer, it forces you to pay attention and keep going in order to try to understand what is really happening.
And here is where my Cuban side comes in.
While watching the series, I couldn’t help but think of something many of us joke about. Yes, the town is terrifying. Yes, there are dangers that appear at night. Yes, the situation is desperate. But after living through power outages, water problems, medicine shortages, and all the difficulties we know, there were moments when I thought: “Well, at least there the electricity doesn’t go out every day… and water isn’t missing.”
Obviously, it’s a joke, but it shows how our reality can change the way we see a fictional story.
In the end, From achieved something that few series manage: it kept me interested episode after episode, even though it’s not a genre I usually enjoy. If you like mysteries, stories that make you think, and shows where every episode matters, I think it’s worth giving it a chance.
My recommendation is to watch it calmly and, if possible, when you already have several seasons available. That way you can enjoy the experience without suffering from waiting between episodes.
And that comes from someone who is not even a fan of horror.

Voy a empezar diciendo algo importante: yo no soy fan del terror. Nunca lo he sido. De hecho, suelo evitar las series que dependen únicamente de los sustos para mantener el interés. Tampoco me gustan las series que sacan una temporada y luego te dejan esperando años para la siguiente. Me desespera ver un capítulo, quedarme con la intriga y no saber cuándo continuará la historia.
Precisamente por eso decidí empezar From. Sabía que ya tenía varias temporadas disponibles y que podía verla sin tener que pasar demasiado tiempo esperando nuevos episodios.
La serie está ambientada en un pueblo extraño y aislado. Las personas que llegan no pueden irse, y pronto se dan cuenta de que hay fuerzas misteriosas que los obligan a permanecer allí. Nadie sabe exactamente qué está pasando, y cada capítulo va revelando información poco a poco, mientras los personajes intentan sobrevivir y entender los secretos del lugar. Es un misterio constante: nadie sabe todo, todos tienen secretos y cualquier error puede ser peligroso.
No quiero hacer spoilers porque gran parte de la magia de la serie está en descubrir poco a poco qué está ocurriendo. Lo que sí puedo decir es que está muy bien construida. Cada episodio aporta información importante y si te saltas uno probablemente te perderás detalles que después serán fundamentales para entender la historia.
Algo que me gustó mucho es que la serie no te entrega todas las respuestas de inmediato. Va revelando pistas poco a poco, manteniendo el misterio vivo. Como espectador, te obliga a prestar atención y a seguir avanzando para intentar entender qué está pasando realmente.
Y aquí es donde entra mi parte de cubano.
Mientras veía la serie, no podía evitar pensar en algo que muchos hemos comentado en broma. Sí, el pueblo es aterrador. Sí, hay peligros que aparecen por la noche. Sí, la situación es desesperante. Pero después de vivir entre apagones, problemas con el agua, escasez de medicamentos y todas las dificultades que conocemos, hubo momentos en los que pensé: "Bueno, al menos allí no se va la corriente todos los días… y no falta el agua".
Obviamente es una broma, pero demuestra cómo nuestra realidad puede cambiar la forma en que vemos una historia de ficción.
Al final, From logró algo que pocas series consiguen: mantenerme interesado episodio tras episodio, a pesar de no ser un género que normalmente disfruto. Si te gustan los misterios, las historias que te obligan a pensar y las series donde cada capítulo cuenta, creo que vale la pena darle una oportunidad.
Mi recomendación es verla con calma y, si es posible, cuando tengas varias temporadas disponibles. Así podrás disfrutar mejor de la experiencia sin sufrir la espera entre episodios.
Y eso lo dice alguien que ni siquiera es fan del terror.
