Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese tales of the macabre review - ESP/ENG

Hace 5 días se estrenó en la plataforma Netflix un anime basado en algunas de las historias de terror de mi querido Junji Ito, titulado "Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese tales of the macabre", como buena fan del artista de comics que soy, ya me vi la adaptación completa y vengo aquí a dar mi opinión personal de que me pareció todo.

Los mangas (comics japoneses) de Junji Ito al haberse vuelto tan conocidos desde hace algunos años, tienen a su nombre ya unas cuantas adaptaciones creadas con anterioridad, que si me preguntan, a pesar de no ser malas, no llegan a la altura del trabajo original, pues no logran simular el detalle y encanto de los dibujos de Ito. Con eso en mente, me adentré a ver esta nueva adaptación de diferentes historias del autor y adivinen, otra vez la animación no logra capturar la esencia y detalle del arte de Ito, sin embargo, no está nada mal y la disfrute bastante.

5 days ago, an anime based on some of the horror stories of my beloved Junji Ito was released on the Netflix platform, titled "Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese tales of the macabre", as a good fan of the comic book artist that I am, I watched the complete adaptation and now I come here to give my personal opinion of what I thought of the whole thing.

Junji Ito's mangas (Japanese comics) have been very well-known for some years now, so they already have to their name a few adaptations created before, which if you ask me, even though they are not bad, they don't reach the level of the original work, because they don't achieve to simulate the detail and charm of Ito's drawings. With that in mind, I decided to watch this new adaptation of different stories created by the author and guess what, once again the animation fails to capture the essence and detail of Ito's art, however, it's not bad at all and I enjoyed it a lot.

La serie animada es básicamente una antología, no tiene un orden para ser vista porque todos los capítulos están basados en diversas historias que no siguen un orden cronológico, esto la hace fácil de visualizar y si no te interesa una historia, simplemente puedes escoger ver otra (en total, son 20 historias las que se adaptan).

El primer capituló es sobre los particulares hermanos Hikizuri, quienes tienen personalidades extrañas y en un intento de contactar a los espíritus de sus padres fallecidos, terminan recibiendo una lección. Debo decir que para ser el primer capítulo me pareció un poco flojo, no pensé que diera miedo, lo que si es que hay personajes que causan irritación y eso es parte de las emociones que suele buscar crear el arte en sus diferentes presentaciones inclinado al género de terror, así que en cierto modo cumple su función.

La cosa se pone buena a partir del capítulo dos, que contiene dos historias cortas en un solo capítulo y se titula "The story of the mysterius tunnel and Ice cream bus".

The animated series is basically an anthology, it has no order to be viewed because all the chapters are based on different stories that do not follow a chronological order, this makes it easy to watch and if you are not interested in a particular story, you can simply choose to watch another one (a total of 20 stories are adapted).

The first chapter is about the particular Hikizuri brothers, who have strange personalities and in an attempt to contact the spirits of their deceased parents, they end up getting a lesson. I must say that for being the first chapter I found it a little weak, I didn't think it was scary, but there are characters that cause irritation and that is part of the emotions that usually seeks to create the art in its different presentations inclined to the horror genre, so in a way it serves its purpose.

It gets good after chapter two, which contains two short stories in one chapter and is titled "The story of the mysterius tunnel and Ice cream bus".

En la primera parte del capítulo dos nos encontraremos con que en un pueblo hay un túnel que cuando las personas entran en él, empiezan a desaparecer (primera imagen). En la segunda parte, todo se pone un poco más extraño, pues seremos espectadores de una historia de esas que parecen inofensivas, pero terminan siendo las más turbias y te dejan con una mala sensación en el cuerpo. Lo que parecía ser un inocente camión de helados que lleva a pasear niños, esconde algo más perturbador que escapa de cualquier razonamiento lógico. Nada más con ver la segunda imagen que es la que corresponde a esta historia, ya nos podemos hacer una idea de por dónde va la cosa.

In the first part of chapter two we will find that in a town there is a tunnel that when people enter it, they begin to disappear (first image). In the second part, everything gets a little stranger as we will be spectators of one of those stories that seem harmless, but end up being the darkest and leave us with a bad feeling in the body. What seemed to be an innocent ice cream truck that takes children for a ride, hides something more disturbing that escapes any logical reasoning. Just by looking at the second image, which is the one that corresponds to this story, we can already get an idea of what is going on.

Uno de los capítulos que más me gusto fue "Hanging Ballons", es excéntricamente perturbador y muy original, de las historias que más me gustan de Ito. La repentina muerte de una Idol japonesa deja a sus fans, amigos y familiares desolados, pero pronto todo se torna extraño cuando la cabeza flotante de la chica empieza a ser vista merodeando por la ciudad y no solo eso, diferentes cabezas que parecen globos comienzan a aparecer en el cielo con la cara de los ciudadanos.

Quise hacer una comparación estética entre la animación y el manga (comic) colocando dos imágenes juntas para que vean la diferencia. Como pueden ver la animación no le llega a los dibujos originales que sin duda alguna dan más miedo. Todo esto lo digo sin ánimos de menospreciar a la animación, porque a pesar de que no logra recrear el arte de Ito, es bastante decente, de hecho este capítulo en particular tiene un tipo de animación como 3D en algunas escenas, lo que lo hace bastante llamativo.

One of the chapters I liked the most was "Hanging Ballons", it is eccentrically disturbing and very original, is one of Ito's stories that I like the most. The sudden death of a Japanese Idol leaves her fans, friends and family devastated, but soon everything becomes strange when the floating head of the girl begins to be seen hanging around the city and not only that, different heads that look like balloons begin to appear in the sky with the faces of the citizens.

I wanted to make an esthetic comparison between the animation and the manga (comic) by placing two images together so you can notice the difference. As you can see, the animation does not reach the original drawings, which are undoubtedly scarier. I say all this without the intention of denigrating the animation, because even though it doesn't succeed in recreating Ito's art, it is pretty decent, in fact this particular chapter has a type of 3D animation in some scenes, which makes it quite eye-catching.

Todos los animes tienen openings y endings, es decir, un tema de apertura y otro de cierre. Me gustaron bastante los de esta adaptación, el opening es bastante psicodélico, la música es un rock pesado y salen los personajes más populares de Ito, más que todo Tomie, la chica protagonista de uno de sus trabajos más populares. El ending por su parte es bastante tranquilo y llega hasta a ser gracioso.

Si hablamos de la música en general utilizada para ambientar los capítulos, pienso que es muy buena, aparecía en los momentos exactos y ayudaba mucho a aumentar la tensión de todo lo que está sucediendo en cada uno de los capítulos.

All animes have openings and endings, in other words, an initial and a closing theme. I liked the ones of this adaptation, the opening is quite psychedelic, the music is a heavy rock and Ito's most popular characters appear, especially Tomie, the main character of one of his most popular works. The ending is quite calm and even funny.

If we talk about the general music used to set the mood of the chapters, I think it is very good, it appeared at the exact moments and helped a lot to increase the tension of everything that is happening in each of the chapters.

En general, la adaptación me gusto, no diría que es un trabajo "pulcro", pero es bastante disfrutable (adaptar los trabajos de Ito no es tarea fácil). Tomemos en cuenta de que esta es una opinión basada en mi punto de vista como persona que ha leído el trabajo original del autor en formato de comic, así que si comparo los dos me doy cuenta en que "falla" la animación, si tú no has leído el trabajo original, puede que la animación te guste tal cual como es.

Si disfrutas del anime, la animación en general, el terror y las cosas extrañas, esta antología animada te va a gustar. Yo recomiendo el trabajo de Junji Ito a todos los amantes del terror y de hecho tengo un post dedicado a él y su trabajo, lo dejaré aquí por si quieren saber más.

Overall, I liked the adaptation, I wouldn't say it's a "clean" work, but it's pretty enjoyable (adapting Ito's work is not an easy task). Let's keep in mind that this is an opinion based on my point of view as a person who has read the author's original work in comic format, so if I compare the two I can see where the animation "fails", but if you haven't read the original work, you might like the animation as it is.
