Battle Mage Secrets: Fire and Regret - Guard The Magicians

Prelude
Hi all, hope all is well for you and it is time for another Battle Mage Secrets. Last week, we looked at a ruleset a new ruleset that caused us to only field a maximum of 4 cards on top of the summoner. Today, we look at a ruleset that is a nemesis to range attackers and the arrows will come flying backwards.

Fire And Regret

Description:

  • All units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle.
  • Enemy units that attack with ranged attacks receive damage back.
  • Damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up.
  • Ranged attack units with the Reflection Shield ability blocks the reflected returned damage.
  • Amplify ability increases the damage that is returned.

What thrives with this ruleset?
The simple thing that we need to observe will be to not start any range attackers, unless it is a card that carries Martyr and you want the damage to come back and suicide, which will trigger a stat boost to adjacent cards.

So when there is absence of range attackers, naturally you will see an increase in the melee and magic attackers. However, because of the nature of range attackers, so far based on my encounters, players tend to replace range cards with magic cards since they can similarly attack from the back.

Since the defence towards melee cards is the same as that to range attackers in the form of Protect and Shield. I will not elaborate too much here. But one can consider adding cards that reduce melee attack in the form of Demoralize. And that should be all on the melee portion.

The one that is hard to guard will be the magic attackers. I would recommend the use of cards with either Void and Void Armour. This two abilities are very important to reduce the damage taken by magic attack. To further help the situation, Silence is awesome as well to reduce the magic damage delivered by your opponent. And lastly to complete the package of defence against magic attackers, Magic Reflect will just create a double return since both magic and range will be shut down.

So now on the stats portion, no specific call out, the more the merrier for each stats so that there will be more sustainability.

Prediction before pressing rumble
Wow, first time facing this summoner and a very strong lineup put up by my opponent. Health boost by Djinn Renova, Meriput to heal, Scavo Hireling to repair and High Priest Darius with Resurrect. Really good considerations put up to win this match.

On my end, while it is a fury ruleset, I am prepare because of the reduced damage from the void which will aid me to hold up the damage while Captain Katie do her work. Will what I intend work, there is only one way to find out....

Let's battle!

Battle Synopsis

Round 1, Barrage exchanged between the 2 sides with Captain Katie killing Marksrat and revived by Darius. Otherwise, relatively friendly exchanges thus far.

Round 2, Another quiet round with just Captain Katie taking out Marksrat for another stat boost to my opponents card. Darius and Renova now look ridiculously huge in terms of stats.

Round 3-4, 2 major exchanges which saw Imperial Knight finally falling after handling a big bunch of punishment from Darius while Captain Katie set eyes on Renova.

Round 5, Soul Fiend got hit by Darius while Captain Katie snipes out Meriput to further grow herself.

Round 6-7, First Captain Katie picks out Scavo Hireling in one round and Darius in the next after Gargoya Scrapper falls and finally Iziar just wraps up the match with a simple zap on opponent's Gargoya Scrapper.

Post Battle Summary
A nice wrap up to the match with loads of exchanges going both ways especially scary when Renova and Darius become extremely big after boosting 2x on martyr by Marksrat. Other wise Iziar stood tall and Captain Katie just munch on every single card.

Did my strategy work? I am sure it really did. I have learnt more about Iziar during my brawl matches. And I know how capable this card is. Combined with Spirit Hoarder, Iziar was fully unscathed in this match. Imperial Knight was also instrumental to hold up the front line especially the consistent big barrage by Darius. With all the various defence setup, need to also prepare a crazy attacker to do the killing. All in all, everything went to plan.

What's the Battle Mage Secret?

The Battle Mage Secret is simple today. Know what will replace a particular type of card if that type gets disabled, plan your lineup, plan the abilities that you know need to put up to face the replacement. For me, I know the most likely replacement for range attackers will be magic attackers, I put up 2 tanks, one to handle the front with a Void Armour and another at the tail with Taunt and Void, then support it with a card with Triage. Combine all these with a Captain Katie that snipes out everything. You have a full package of things to get your match onto the winning side.
