Kevin has 23 distinct personalities. The 24th is about to be unleashed

When the film opened in the cinema, I didn't go to see it, no matter how positive the trailer and the comments I heard about it. He gave me a feeling of film that I should see at home and not at the cinema, because my easy dispersion would not let me understand the film perfectly.

According to the websites IMDB and RottenTomatoes these are the synopses:

IMDB

Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

Rotten Tomatoes

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all of the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him -- as well as everyone around him -- as the walls between his compartments shatter.

Now let's get to the points that caught my attention in the film

James McAvoy

Okay, I wouldn't like to start with the obvious, but this time there is no way. James, who I already had a good view of previous films like X-Men for example, and Wanted who despite being a film far below my expectations (I will talk about it in another moment), had a good performance together with Jolie .

Embodying several personas in one body is a difficult job for any actor. I can state this with some propriety in the matter due to the 10 years that I spent on the stage, and that as soon as this pandemic is gone and the theaters are allowed to be opened again it will have my feet again for that place. But back to the question of performance.

You need to be connected to each character, each feeling, each symbol that you have assigned to that character, and focus on rescuing them when it comes to acting. At this moment, the breathing and immersion that Stanislavski teaches in his books is a very important role for the actor to be able to 'enter the tunnel' and find the character waiting to be guided by the artist's body.

It is not an easy task when there are only two or three personalities, even less when you have to work on several of them. Obviously, it would require a much more complicated job if it were in a theater, instead of a movie where you can shoot as many times as necessary, but that does not detract from McAvoy's merit. A great performance that was even nominated as best actor at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Anya Taylor-Joy

As much as he won a 2016 revelation actress award from the Gotham Awards for The Witch, the film that made him the most successful at the box office was Fragmentado, opposite an excellent McAvoy on the scene and having in the credits of the film Bruce Willis, a name who has a lot to teach for those who are just beginning to pursue a career in the world of interpretation.

In my total opinion at that moment, Anya's performance was at odds with her stage friends. They were very stereotyped with a little 'over' performance, unlike Taylor-Joy who managed to mix nuances, a very important aspect for an actor.

No wonder, she is increasingly making new productions and standing out, drawing a lot of attention again to the Queen's Gambit

Best quotes

Hedwig is possibly the character who most bonds with the public in the hope of whether the girls can leave the room or not.

That personality can mean many things besides a simple boy who obeys Kevin, but a suppressed innocence. However, it is pure guesswork of mine, I did not study anything about psychology and nothing I say about behaviors here is verified.

The mixture of hope and disappointment when Hedwig talks about a window, and the girls speculate that it may be a solution to escape through it, but when they discover that it is just a window design and that they have returned to the starting point without a exit, it shows that not even even the most 'kind' personality he carries is willing to let them out.

If we look from Kevin's point of view, after he says the sentence above, for a moment you can think that he really thinks he is doing the right thing and trying to be good with them, but you can see that he does not do anything idea of what it is like to be good or bad since your attitudes say completely different from your actions.

Final considerations

If you haven't watched the movie yet, you can start because you won't be wasting your time. McAvoy's acting can be rewarding if you don't like the script or how the film ends.

Sometimes you may be irritated by the lethargy that Anya’s character appears at the beginning of the plot, but it’s just a way of building throughout the film, and it worked, not in the way that I would do if I were the director, but the proposal was reached.
