MIRACLE CAN HAPPEN WHEN LEAST EXPECTED
At a moment in time, you came up with an idea that just felt so right and would change your life if you had acted on it but you never did until now. Share with us, the idea that has stuck with you for many years whether the impossible or possible from the time you had it.
I married early in life due to the fact that I see my age mates getting married and are making it in life, i also determined to get married at the tender age. My family background also contributed to that, as our parents could not educate all of us, being a polygamous family of four wives and many children. My aim in life was to marry a prominent man and live comfortably with my family, but the reverse was the case.
I Abebi, one of the wives, decided, out of frustration, to commit suicide with a long rope, already prepared into a noose, I headed for a thick forest at the outskirts of the town. After a long trek, I stopped by a cola tree near a stream. Shedding tears bitterly and soliloquizing, I tied the rope to the tree and began to lament:
“Life has been very cruel to me. For many years, I have toiled day and night, seeking solutions to my age-long despondency. I have climbed hills and scaled mountains. I’ve drunk concoctions from various sources. I have done all the gymnastics, yet, my labours are in futility. If I come back to this world once again, I shall choose to be a mother of babies. For me to continue in ridicule, better it is to die than live in shame.”
As I was about to hang myself, a woman herbalist, who had come to the forest from a neighbouring village to cav:tch herbal plants noticed me. “Hei, stop it! A taboo!”
The herbalist thundered. “Have you forgotten what the elders say, that, cursed is he who hanged himself upon a tree?” I held my legs in an attempt to pull me down.
Sweating and wailing profusely, I began to recount my sad experiences:
“Mother, my life has been full of thorns and thistles. I’ve been made a laughing stock among my mates. For two decades and more, I have remained barren. I was the very goast of my husband when we got married, years ago. I lacked nothing a woman could ever wish to have, yet, I remained miserable in the midst of plenty. For once, in a day, I never conceived, let alone having a baby to suck my breast. If ever a woman could get a baby to buy, I would have gone to the market for one. My rivals at home even make things worse for me. They call me a beautiful tree without a fruit, a he-goat, a stream without water and other silly names. They neither let their children eat my food nor allow them run errands for me. Surely, it is better to die than endure the contempt of other wives…” As I recounted my experiences, the woman listened with rapt attention and was full of pity for me. She had never seen a woman in such a grief.
“I truly can understand your plight, my daughter.” The woman responded and sighed. “This reminds me of an ageless song of our fore-fathers, which says:
A child’s like a rare bird in the forest
Just like precious gold in the mine
Like rubies, like jasper or emerald
You cannot get a single one to buy ……
“And so, you know why I need to die, since no child is going to inherit my property”, I responded hopelessly.
“Never”, the herbalist cut me short.” A plantain tree by the river side shall never die without fruit. You’ll never die without a child.”
“There is no problem without a solution”, the woman assured but all the entreaties did not mean anything to me.
“Mother, you don’t understand the enormity of my plight. I have been to mountains and valleys. I have danced naked at Oriaria, in the heartland of Ebu. I’ve offered goats to many a goddess in the dead of the night. I have been to the Olalia grove to worship the goddess of the river but to no avail.
“Haba, my daughter! You have really tried but have you tried Obongenyong?”
Obongenyong! Who is Obongenyong?” I asked with heart pondered wildly. I had never heard of that before. “Obongenyong?! Who is Obongenyong?” “The God of creation. Obongenyong is the giver and taker of life, the owner of the earth and the firmaments who wipes away tears from the faces of those that cry; the one who changes bad to good and turns ordinary blood to baby. He can do anything. Your case is small for him.”
As the woman spoke so eloquently of Obongenyong, I suddenly jumped up excitedly, basking in the euphoria of a God somewhere upon the earth that could answer my prayer.
“You mean Obongenyong can answer my prayer?”
“Yes, He can”
“Oh! If he can, I will dance like a sparrow weaving its nest. I will swing like a bee bemused by the scent of nectar.”
Without much ado, the herbalist offered to take me to Obongenyong’s Shrine where series of rituals were performed. At the end of the seventh day, I was asked to go back home; that Obongenyong had answered my prayer and I would conceive and bear quadruplet and it manifested after nine months, going to 10 months I gave birth to two boys and two girls. They are very great children living oversees. All what I am today is as a result of my rescue from committing suicide and the idea was not so right but at a long run became possible for me to make it in life. Thanks for reading.
