A Day At The Local Market

(Edited)

Good day everyone! It's good to be back here sharing my market experience. We were given a midterm break at work early this week, and one of the things I decided to do was visit the market to purchase some foodstuffs such as vegetables, tomatoes, fish, and other necessities required to prepare a decent soup. Come along as I share my purchase experience.

I went to the market last week, and on arriving, I went to the pepper and tomato segment and purchased some of it to prepare stew that would last for some days. I was told that the price of pepper is currently on the rise due to the recent removal of fuel subsidies, because that has made transporting the pepper from the down to Lagos more expensive.

I purchased peppers and tomatoes for about ₦800 naira, and it seems so small compared to what we got at such a rate previously, although the onions were much cheaper as I was given about 5 huge pieces for just ₦100 naira.

After these, I took the pepper to another store to help me blend it for just 150 naira. While it was being blended, I went to the vegetables section and purchased vegetables commonly known here as efo shoko for 200 naira. The lady helped me cut them into small pieces, and I also purchased a locust beans for 100 naira from her before going to carry my pepper.

From there, I went to a frozen food store to purchase some chicken and fish. I purchased a kilo of chicken for 2500 naira and a half kilo of Titus fish for 1100 naira. Those were still decent prices, because I can remember going to the same store a few days after this purchase and seeing that a kilo of chicken was now being sold for 3000 naira rather than the 2500 naira I paid for my

Overall, everything I purchased at the market cost just 4950 naira, which I think is still a good price. Although it wasn't this high the last time, I was thinking it'd cost more than this given the current price hike going on in different sectors due to the fuel subsidy removal.

Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday this week! It is always such a pleasure to have you. As you can see, I am running more than late here this week. For this, I'm so sorry. While I have read your market post (I have read them all!) I had some unexpected surgery that has me unable to finish most of them. While I am fine, the swelling, bruising, and healing have slowed me just a bit. I'll be good soon. Quite miserable until then!

I am happy to have read them all pf the posts and able to send out the upvotes. A partial win for me!
I truly appreciate all of the sharing of experiences and even more, when people visit others, starting a dialogue. This is what the vision of #MarketFriday was. The understanding for all.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can benefit a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you; it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday
