The entire story takes place in the Cauca Valley, Colombia, and tells of the tumultuous yet idyllic romance between two young people, María and Efraín. One of the obstacles they face is their blood relation, as they are cousins, and to make matters worse, María suffers from epilepsy. Ultimately, Efraín's parents, who were caring for María, decided to accept the relationship and allow them to become engaged, but on the condition that he go to Europe to study medicine. Upon his return, they would marry. However, when he comes back... well, I won't tell you more so as not to spoil the expectations of anyone who decides to read this wonderful Latin American novel, which is rarely discussed.
Toda la historia transcurre en el Valle del Cauca, Colombia y se trata del tormentoso aunque idílico romance entre dos jóvenes, María y Efraín, pero uno de los impedimentos que tienen en su contra es su parentesco sanguíneo pues son primos y para colmo María sufre de epilepsia, pero al final de cuenta los padres de Efraín que estaban a cargo de María decidieron aceptar la relación y dejar que se comprometieran para casarse, pero a cambio de que él se fuese a estudiar medicina a Europa, a su regreso se casarían, sin embargo cuando el regresa... bueno, no les contaré más para no arruinar las expectativas de quién decida leer esta maravillosa novela latinoamericana de la que poco se habla.
It has a beautiful narrative and vocabulary; it's romanticism in its purest essence, where love is idealized and experienced with total intensity. The main characters dream of a life together but also tremble before an uncertain future or possible tragedy. Furthermore, nature plays a crucial role in the novel, acting as another character or even, we could say, as a reflection of the main characters' emotions. I love the description of the Cauca Valley; it's almost like an invitation to visit and enjoy all the beauty and wonders the author mentions, and at the same time, it sounds like the perfect setting for romance.
Tiene una narrativa y un vocabulario precioso, es romanticismo en su más pura escancia, donde el amor es idealizado y se vive con total intensidad, los personajes principales sueñan con una vida juntos pero también se estremecen ante un futuro incierto o la posible fatalidad, pro otra parte la naturaleza juega un papel importantísimo en la novela, actuando como un personaje más o incluso podríamos decir que como un reflejo de las emociones de los personajes principales. Me encanta la descripción del Valle del Cauca, es casi como una invitación a visitarlo y disfrutar de todas las bellezas y maravillas que menciona el autor, y a su vez suena como el escenario perfecto para el romance.
The story is somewhat reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, or more accurately Wuthering Heights (perhaps due to the setting), and it reminds me of Romeo and Juliet because of the idealized romance between the protagonists. It's narrated in the first person, with Efraín telling his own story, which makes the novel feel more personal and realistic.
La historia de cierta manera recuerda a Romeo y Julieta o más propiamente Cumbres Borrascosas (tal vez por el entorno) y me recuerda a Romeo y Julieta por la manera en que está idealizado el romance de los protagonistas. Está narrada en primera persona, siendo Efraín quién cuenta su propia historia y esto hace que la novela se sienta más personal y realista.
It is a work worth reading but I think it is very underrated, in the sense that it is hardly mentioned and seems to get lost among the success of other Latin American works such as One Hundred Years of Solitude or The House of the Spirits.
Es una obra digna de leer pero me parece que está muy infravalorada, en el sentido de que casi no se menciona y parece diluirse entre el éxito de otras obras latinoamericanas como Cien Años de Soledad o La Casa de los Espíritus.
