The Wizard with the Glass Face [Book Review] ESP/ENG
Today I am going to talk to you about a book I confess I hadn't known about before—a true Latin American gem. I am proud to add that it is by a Venezuelan author, Eduardo Liendo; although the plot is very much of the 20th century, it adapts perfectly to the times we live in today, deep in the 21st century. The work is titled *El Mago con la Cara de Vidrio* (The Wizard with the Glass Face)... And who is this peculiar Wizard? you might ask. Well, it is none other than a television set that suddenly arrives at the home of Ceferino—a very traditional high school teacher concerned for his family's well-being. Yet, he soon notices that this modern contraption—with its buttons and antennas, which he begins to call the "Wizard with the Glass Face"—gradually starts to shatter the family's peace and harmony, taking control of everyone's will by dictating trends, capturing their attention, and even dominating family conversations.
Hoy les voy a hablar de un libro del cuál confieso que yo no sabía, una verdadera joya latinoamericana y orgullosamente debo añadir que es de un autor venezolano, Eduardo Liendo, y la trama, aunque es muy del sigo XX perfectamente se puede amoldar a los tiempos que vivimos hoy en día en pleno siglo XXI. El nombre de la obra es El Mago con la Cara de Vidrio... ¿Y quién es este mago tan particular? probablemente se pregunten ustedes, pues no es otro más que un televisor que llega de pronto a la casa de Ceferino, un profesor de secundaria muy tradicional que se preocupa por el bienestar de su familia, mas de pronto advierte que aquel artefacto moderno con botones y antenas al que él comienza a llamar "Mago con cara de Vidrio" poco a poco empieza a resquebrajar la paz y la armonía familiar, apoderándose de la voluntad de todos al dictarles tendencias, capturar su atención e incluso dominar conversaciones familiares.
The most interesting aspect of this novel is that the television set does not appear to us merely as an electrical appliance; instead, it practically takes on a life of its own and becomes a character in its own right—one might even go so far as to call it the story's villain. The protagonist calls it "Magician" because it casts a spell over the other family members, shattering the domestic harmony Ceferino cherishes so deeply. In this regard, the story bears a striking resemblance to modern times: just as television once captivated us, social media now holds us under a similar spell, setting trends—often absurd ones—while people seem unable to live without public approval, a factor that effectively dominates their lives.
Lo más interesante de esta novela es que el televisor no se presenta ante nosotros como un simple artefacto eléctrico, sino que prácticamente tiene vida propia y se vuelve un personaje más, incluso podríamos llegar a afirmar que es el villano de la historia. El protagonista lo llama "Mago" porque encanta a los demás miembros de la familia, lo que fractura la armonía familiar que Ceferino tanto aprecia, y en este sentido es cuando les digo que guarda mucha similitud con los tiempos modernos pues las redes sociales lograron encantarnos tanto como en su momento lo hizo la televisión, de igual manera marca tendencias (y muchas de ellas absurdas) y la gente parece que no puede vivir sin la aprobación publica, lo cuál es un hecho que prácticamente domina sus vidas.
It serves as a powerful social critique of the massive impact mass media has had on the world—not in a positive sense, of course, but rather in the way it erodes the critical thinking every human being ought to possess. It becomes a problem when media starts dictating what you should do, how you should dress, and how you should speak, gradually stripping away your humanity. Naturally, there is a significant generational clash, as the protagonist hails from an era when people were more accustomed to thinking for themselves than being told what to do; ultimately, that blasted television truly became a headache for society.
Es una gran crítica social al gran impacto que trajeron los medios de comunicación al mundo, no en el buen sentido, claro, sino en el sentido en el que van resquebrajando el pensamiento crítico que cada ser humano debe tener, se vuelve un problema cuando ya te dice que hacer, como vestir, como hablar y te van deshumanizando de a poco. Obviamente hay un choque generacional bastante importante porque el protagonista viene de otros tiempos, en los cuales la gente estaba más acostumbrada a pensar que a que le dijeran que hacer pero de verdad el bendito televisor se llegó a convertir en un dolor de cabeza para la sociedad.
Even so, despite the obvious critique, the book is largely satirical and parodic, making it very entertaining—especially in Ceferino’s attempts to defend his territory against that glass-faced "intruder."
Aún así, a pesar de la obvia crítica el libro tiene mucho de sátira y parodia, así que resulta muy divertido, en especial en los intentos de Ceferino por defender su territorio de aquel "intruso" con cara de vidrio.
