The old woman in the fog

The deception of the woman he loved so much had completely wrinkled his heart. He did not know the reason why she left him for another man, nor did he know the exact moment when the relationship fell apart, like a dry rose with its petals on the ground.

Since then Lorenzo began to have bad fortune, his life seemed to derail in almost every way. His job performance declined and all he could think about was her, his one and only Francesca. A woman he had met on a college exchange several years ago.

He waited a few minutes for the bus and that was when he felt he was being watched in the thick fog that morning. His body shuddered as he saw the old woman look at him with withering eyes without saying a word. Her gray hair stood out against her black dress that covered a large part of her body. That disturbing moment ended as soon as the bus arrived at the bus stop, Lorenzo got on and saw through one of the windows the woman sticking something on a lamppost, until the fog completely clouded her silhouette until she disappeared.

He couldn't concentrate, not after feeling that strange sensation of being worried about something, but not knowing why or for what reason.

—Have you seen how Lorenzo is shaking in his chair? —One of his companions whispered to the rest of them. —It seems that something happened to him when he got here.

He was in one of the cubicles in the office with a blank stare, still thinking about that strange situation. The boss arrived and all of Lorenzo's colleagues looked away from the curious look on their faces and went about their business before they suffered some kind of sanction.

—What's going on Lorenzo? Look, today is the deadline for the project report. Get a move on. —Said his boss with great annoyance.

—No, it's nothing. I'll be right back to finish what's due, maybe I'm under pressure, that's all. —Lorenzo replied to his boss, trying to hide what was happening to him.

He was still worried about something and deep down he knew he had to find some answers. He finished with the work that needed to be delivered and asked one of his colleagues if he could make the delivery for him. At about five o'clock in the afternoon, as the glare of the sun fell on the office, he walked out one of the doors with barely a sound, in search of those answers, starting with one place; the bus stop where that old lady had been.

When he got there he noticed that there was a sign taped to one of the light poles. "Tarot and Videncia, we see what you don't see. Visit us and we will heal all your ills", said that sheet of paper on which glue was still dripping. It had no address and no telephone number. It was then that she spotted in the distance two crows with a terrifying appearance, they seemed to flap their wings with great violence fighting each other, until they flew away.

He could still hear the cawing of those crows on the other side of the street. Lorenzo seeing that it also generated that uneasiness he had earlier, did not hesitate to go and see what it was all about.

The night was falling quickly and the cold was hitting his face hard, a constant steam was coming out of his lips as he walked. He walked a few streets in the direction of that disturbing sound until he came across a house in the middle of others that seemed to be abandoned. There was a rusty gate at the entrance from which hung some equally ruined chains. To his surprise, something whispered in his ear.

—Uncover everything. Only here. Now! —A voice spoke with no apparent direction.

As he entered, a long hallway led to the interior of the place where candles could be seen flickering through a window of amber-colored glass. There stood the old woman waiting for him, in front of a few cards on a velvet-covered table.

—I see that you are here to find out not only your future, but also your past, the one in which you had the love of your life in your hands. —Said the seer. —Trust me and you will get what you long for.

Lorenzo shuddered when he knew that the old woman was reviewing his life with total accuracy. But there was a moment when he was surprised and the cards fell out of his hand.

—That woman who left you has already come to see me. She wanted fortune, money and passion, and I gave it to her just as she asked. But in return I took from her what you really lack, love.

—With this reading I know that someone will come to you, and I will bring love back into your life forever. You will even be a very powerful man, love will come along with much fortune.

Time passed since the time Lorenzo dared to visit that old woman. He managed to move up in the company where he had worked for so many years without success, and it was there that he met Samantha, the daughter of the new boss in charge of one of the most revolutionary projects in which both would be immersed. The company became very valuable.

Since then he has not seen the psychic again, nor the place where they did the card reading. She seemed to have left that place, but the truth is that every time she passes by that corner where the crows generated dread, it seems to be seen this time, the figure of Francesca holding a child in her arms, hiding until she disappears in the fog.

Loved reading this. It had the mysterious ring to it from start to finish.
A man who lost what he thought was the most important thing in his life only for him to gain so much more.
